Anthony Trollope
Like physician Anton Chekhov, customs inspector Herman Melville, and insurance man Wallace Stevens, English novelist Anthony Trollope belonged to that proud society of writers who worked a double shift. While other men were content to have one profession, Trollope pursued two with gusto: He undertook a distinguished if unconventional career in the British General Post Office (capped by his invention of Britain's distinctive red pillar mailbox), at the same time penning some of the most popular social novels of his day and in no small quantity.
Anthony Trollope was the fourth son of Thomas Anthony and Frances (Milton) Trollope. During his youth, he was shuttled among several public schools, where the ill-clad and awkward boy was often the subject of taunts and jeers from well-off schoolmates. When his father's law practice began to fail, his mother's American mercantile venture soured, and an expected inheritance was cut off, the Trollopes moved to Belgium. It was here that Mrs. Trollope took over support of the family through her already successful career as a satiric novelist ( Domestic Manners of the Americans

The Warden
by Anthony Trollope In the mid nineteenth century there were a number of financial scandals in the Church of England including those of Rochester, where the endowments which should have supported the King’s School Canterbury had been diverted to the Dean and Chapter; and of the hospital of St Cross at Winchester where the Rev. Francis North, later the Earl of Guildford, had been appointed to the mastership of the hospital by his father the bishop. The revenues of the hospital were very considerable, the work involved minimal. The scandal soon broke. Trollope based ‘The Warden’ on the St Cross case, but in the novel the Warden is a kindly, devoted, priest, beloved by all that knew him and is racked by fear that he is accepting money to which he is not entitled. His antagonist is his prospective son-in-law John Bold and his (somewhat unwelcome) ally is one of Trollope’s strongest characters, the Archdeacon of Barchester, Dr. Theophilus Grantly. The Genius of Nathaniel Hawthorne
by Anthony Trollope
from North American Review, CCLXXIV (September, 1879), pp. 203-22.
There never surely was a powerful, active, continually effective mind less round, more lop-sided, than that of NATHANIEL HAWTHORNE. If there were aught of dispraise in this, it would not be said by me,by an Englishman of an American whom I knew, by an Englishman of letters of a brother on the other side of the water, much less by me, an English novelist, of an American novelist. The blacksmith, who is abnormally strong in his arm, gives the world the advantage of his strength. The poor bird, whose wretched life is sacrificed to the unnatural growth of that portion of him which the gourmands love, does produce the desired dainties in all their perfection. We could have hardly had Childe Harold except from a soured nature. The seraphic excellence of Hiawatha and Evangeline could have proceeded only from a mind which the world's roughness had neither toughened nor tainted. So from Hawthorne we could not have obtained that weird, mysterious, thrilling charm with which he has awed and delighted us had he not allowed his mind to revel in one direction, so as to lose its fair proportions.

Who has ever traveled in foreign countries without meeting excellent stories against the citizens of such countries? And how few can travel without hearing such stories against themselves!
    Rachel Ray

She had been like a young peach tree that, in its early days, is carefully taught to grow against a propitious southern wall. Her natural prop had been found for her, and all had been well. But her heaven had been made black with storms; the heavy winds had come, and the warm sheltering covert against which she had felt herself so safe had been torn away from her branches as they were spreading themselves forth to the fullness of life. She had been married at eighteen, and then, after ten years of wedded security, she had become a widow.
    The Prime Minister
It is a certainty of service to a man to know who were his grandfathers and who were his grandmothers if he entertain an ambition to move in the upper circles of society, and also of service to be able to speak of them as of persons who were themselves somebodies in their time. Lady Anna I fear that she had no other ground, firmer than this, on which to found her hopes of happiness. She could not have thought Lord Lovel to be a good man when she married him, and it can hardly be said that she loved him. She was then twenty-four years old, and he had counted double as many years.
