Anthony Trollope (1815-1882) post office official and prolific English novelist from the Victorian Era, penned The Barset Chronicles series. Anthony Trollope was born on 24 April, 1815 at 6 Keppel Street, Bloomsbury, London, the fourth son of Thomas Anthony Trollope (1774-1835) and Frances (née Milton) (1779-1863). His father, who suffered from bouts of depression, was an unsuccessful lawyer and farmer. The family's humiliating state of poverty formed a lasting impression on Trollope, who was a tall, lanky, poorly dressed unhappy lad amongst the aristocratic youth of the famous schools he attended. In 1827, while Trollope attended his father's old school, Winchester, his mother left for America to assist in the set up of an English goods bazaar in Cincinnati. It was an architectural monstrosity and a total failure, pushing the Trollope family to the last stages of financial ruin. The family moved to Bruges, Belgium in 1834, where Frances supported the family with her writing which she was quite successful at. Her Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832) was well received in England. Trollope's father Thomas died in Bruges in 1835. His older brother Henry and his younger sister Emily died in Bruges too the following year.

Executive summary: Barchester Towers English novelist, born in London, on the 24th of April 1815. His father, Thomas Anthony Trollope, a barrister who had been fellow of New College, Oxford, was reduced to poverty by unbusinesslike habits and injudicious speculation, and in 1829 Anthony's mother, Frances Milton Trollope, went with her husband to the United States to open a small fancy-goods shop in Cincinnati. The enterprise was a failure, but her three years' stay in that country resulted in a book on the Domestic Manners of the Americans (1832), of which she gave an unflattering account that aroused keen resentment. Returning to England her husband was compelled to flee the country in order to escape his creditors, and Mrs. Trollope thereafter supported him in Bruges until his death by her incessant literary work. She published some books of travel, most of which are colored by prejudice, and many novels, among the best known of which are The Vicar of Wrexhill (1837) and the Widow Barnaby (1839), studies in that vein of broad comedy in which lay her peculiar gift. She wrote steadily for more than twenty years, until her death, at Florence, on the 6th of October 1863. Her eldest son Thomas Adolphus Trollope was educated at Winchester and Oxford, and spent most of his life in Italy. He wrote a number of works on Italian subjects, among them

    Laura's Review
16 February 2002 Last night I watched The Barchester Chronicles - ALL 6 HOURS OF IT!! - which I had borrowed from my local library. I only borrowed it because of Alan Rickman and really wasn't looking forward to it as it is a period costume piece - not my bag, baby! - but I really enjoyed it!! It was quite funny and very touching. Other than AR the cast includes Donald Pleasance, Nigel Hawthorne, Phillyda Law and Susan Hampshire. This is a very amusing film. AR is hilarious as the sinister Slope, who's plans continually get thwarted, and the rest of the cast are fantastic. If you can find it, watch it! I definitely recommend it.
    Fausta's Review
Overall rating: 4 hands, since I really love Trollope Rickmaniac rating: 2 hands, since he only appears in the second half Synopsis: Mr. Harding, the warden of Hiram’s Hospital faces unpleasant publicity and turmoil in his quiet life. This BBC miniseries is loyal to the two Anthony Trollope novels on which it is based: The Warden and Barchester Towers (the first two Barchester novels). Trollope is one of my three most favorite writers (Vargas Llosa and Maupassant are the other two), and this miniseries does not disappoint.

    Modern History Sourcebook:
    Anthony Trollope:
The Diamond Fields of South Africa, 1870
£THE first known finding of a diamond in South Africa was as recent as 1867, and this diamond was found by accident and could not for a time obtain any credence. It is first known to have been seen at the house of a Dutch farmer named Jacobs, in the northern limits of the Cape Colony, and south of the Orange River. It had probably been brought from the bed of the stream or from the other side of the river. The "other side" vould be in Griqualand West, the land of diamonds. As far as I can learn, there is no idea that diamonds have been deposited by nature in the soil of the Cape Colony proper. At Jacobs's house it was seen in the hands of one of the children by another Boer named Van Niekerk, who observing that it was brighter and also heavier than other stones, and thinking it to be too valuable for a plaything, offered to buy it. But the child's mother would not sell such a trifle and gave it to Van Niekerk. From Van Niekerk it was passed on to one O'Reilly, who seems to have been the first to imagine it to be a diamond. He took it to Capetown, where he could get no faith for his stone, and thence back to Colesberg on the northern extremity of the Colony, where it was again encountered with ridicule. But it became a matter of discussion, and was at last sent to Dr. Atherstone, of Grahamstown, who was known to be a geologist and a man of science. He surprised the world of South Africa by declaring the stone to be an undoubted diamond. It weighed over 21 carats and was sold to Sir P. Wodehouse, the then Governor of the Colony, for £ 500.

Biographical note Novelist, son of Thomas Anthony T., a barrister who ruined himself by speculation, and of Frances T. ( q.v. ), a well-known writer, was born in London, and ed. The Warden produced the first of his Barsetshire series. It was followed by Barchester Towers Doctor Thorne Framley Parsonage The Small House at Allington (1864), and The Last Chronicle of Barset (1867), which deal with the society of a small cathedral city. Other novels are Orley Farm Can you forgive Her? Ralph the Heir The Claverings Phineas Finn He knew he was Right , and The Golden Lion of Grandpré . In all he wrote about 50 novels, besides books about the West Indies, North America, Australia, and South Africa, a translation of Cæsar , and monographs on Cicero and Thackeray. His novels are light of touch, pleasant, amusing, and thoroughly healthy. They make no attempt to sound the depths of character or either to propound or solve problems. Outside of fiction his work was generally superficial and unsatisfactory. But he had the merit of providing a whole generation with wholesome amusement, and enjoyed a great deal of popularity. He is said to have received £70,000 for his writings. [From A Short Biographical Dictionary of English Literature by John W. Cousin, 1910
