Summer Reading (a little something from the archives)
If you're looking for some fun summer reading, may I recommend picking up...
Travels with Alice by Calvin Trillin (Avon, 1989)
In Travels with Alice , Calvin Trillin relates his adventures on several international vacations with his wife Alice and their two daughters. A series of loosely connected chapters, the book chronicles the family Trillin’s several trips to the south of France, as well as visits to Italy, Spain, Guadeloupe and Barbados. Trillin is best known as a frequent contributor to The New Yorker , where several sections of Travels with Alice first appeared. The book feels like the compilation of magazine articles that it is. On the bright side, that makes this collection of humorous, bite-sized tales a good traveler’s companion – something easy to pick up and put down as time permits.
In “Defying Mrs. Tweedie,” Trillin recounts his visit to the Sicilian resort town of Taormina, comparing his experiences to those of Mrs. Alec Tweedie, a late Victorian travel writer. Mrs. Tweedie is, according to Trillin, not easily amused or impressed. As early as 1904, according to her guide book, Taormina was already being “spoilt” by too many vacationers. “She sounded as if she might fit comfortably among those travelers whose measure of authenticity is so exacting that they tend to find even the ruins ruined.”

Calvin Trillin Loves His Wife
Five Years After, He’s Still Crazy About Alice by Lizzy Ratner January 14, 2007 Nina Roberts Calvin Trillin. On a recent un-wintry Wednesday, two days after his latest book arrived on shelves, Calvin Trillin, the 71-year-old writer, humorist and food-lorist, sat in his West Village townhouse looking perplexed. Three S-shaped lines were etched across his forehead, and whenever he spoke, they squiggled up and down like waves. The New Yorker Now, nine months later, Mr. Trillin has turned the essay into a book, a 78-page heartbreaker called About Alice All of which baffles its author, who insisted he had no desire to be a mascot for marriage, let alone for male enlightenment. not But try telling that to the women who fell in love with Mr. Trillin for his love of Alice, who have nursed serious Calvin crushes ever since they first discovered his foodie adventure book, Alice Salon The New Yorker New Yorker The Year of Magical Thinking , was to give them angina.

One of the very first posts here on crabwalk.com Calvin Trillin . Alice died of heart failure on September 11, 2001. (Rough day all around.) Calvin Trillin is my hero. He was the first adult writer I ever connected with: at age nine, when for some reason, I had a subscription to The Nation With All Disrespect American Stories . When I was a freshman at Yale, I read Remembering Denny When I was in college, I honestly fantasized about marrying one of daughters, Sarah or Abigail, just because I wanted to sneak into his wonderful Trillin family tableaus. In other words, I have a serious case of hero worship. the web is busy talking about it 31 March 2006 2 comments I completely agree with this guy . I was a Mets for no particular reason in the early-to-mid-1980s too, and I absolutely think the Spider-Man shorts on The Electric Company precisely soft-shoe silhouettes here Electric Company DVDs and other stuff here , although the blog is disappointing. Calvin Trillin, Not Dating
Email Link ... Comments (0) By Geoff Edgers January 10, 07 09:28 PM My review of Calvin Trillin's "About Alice" ran a few days ago. Here's Lizzy Ratner's fantastic feature on Trillin in the New York Observer. She details how the New Yorker essay (and now book) about his late wife seemed to "trip some kind of secret wire in urban romantics' hearts." My favorite exchange:
As for the thorny question of dating, he responded that he could conceive of it, though "not in some organized way."
"I don't want to be fixed up with your aunt, if that's what you mean," he said. Calvin Trillin (pictured with Alice after their London marriage in 1965) benefited from his wife's contributions as muse, straight woman, and sounding board. July 04, 2004 Calvin Trillin's George Bush poem, "Nanny Dick" This was emailed to me by a friend so I can't provide a link. It is absolutely great. New Poem by Calvin Trillin George had trouble at his recent press conference. He had trouble understanding the questions, and he had a difficult time constructing coherent sentences. One exchange in particular caught my attention. He was asked not once but twice why he and Dick were appearing together, not separately as had been requested, before the 9/11 commission. He didn't answer the question at the press conference. Fortunately George later explained it to Calvin Trillin. I CAN'T APPEAR WITHOUT

No one combines humor and food as well as Calvin Trillin, whether explaining why spaghetti carbonara should be the national Thanksgiving dish, or why having a third helping is a guests highest compliment to the hostess. Trillin has an enthusiastic love of food, and a willingness to try anything. His adventurous nature is sometimes thwarted by waiters who solemnly proclaim "You no like." when he tries to order something exotic, but he preserves on, even engaging the services of an Asian language linguist to help him in his quest to enjoy what the 'man at the next table is having'. A light read, despite the heavy meals described, this is perfect summer reading. For a short biography of the author: www.thenation.com/about/magazine/bios/trillin.shtml
