Park, He Said

By CALVIN TRILLIN Published: January 26, 2007 Skip to next paragraph Enlarge This Image Henning Wagenbreth IT was only a matter of time before someone was able to spot the test driver deep within me. O.K., test parker: I was asked if I would do a road test of the self-parking device on the new Lexus LS 460 L. Although I like to think that I was being perceived as a laconic man with steel nerves and steady hands, I suspect that the invitation had something to do with my authorship of “Tepper Isn’t Going Out,” which is considered by most scholars to have been the first parking novel. It might even have had something to do with the fact that in 1964 I was the founding co-editor of Beautiful Spot: A Magazine of Parking, which I’ve seen referred to as a one-issue publication even though we prefer to say that the second issue hasn’t come out yet. (We’ve had some production difficulties.) If I were asked to name my talent — talent, that is, in the way the Miss America pageant uses the word talent, as in “Miss West Virginia will now do her talent” — I would say “parallel parking.” For the second issue of Beautiful Spot: A Magazine of Parking, I’ve been preparing an article on how I came up with the term “slicing the bread” to describe maneuvering into a spot that leaves only the width of a bread slice between your bumpers and the bumpers of the cars ahead of and behind you. In a later issue, I intend to discuss “breaking the matzo” — getting into a spot so small that a matzo would crack if you tried to place it between the relevant bumpers. Just for the record, the last time I broke a matzo was May 1994, on Riverside Drive, between 83rd and 84th; unfortunately, there were no witnesses.

Speaker Biography
Calvin Trillin
Calvin Trillin has been acclaimed in fields of writing that are remarkably diverse. As someone who has published solidly reported pieces in The New Yorker for thirty years, he has been called "perhaps the finest reporter in America". His antic commentary on the American scene- which now appears weekly in Time magazine, and his books chronicling his adventures as a "happy eater" have earned him renown as "a classic American humorist". His best-selling book Remembering Denny was hailed as "an elegiac, disturbing and altogether brilliant memoir". Trillin began his career as a writer for Time and then became a staff writer for The New Yorker, and then a columnist for The Nation. There he wrote what USA Today called "simply the funniest regular column in journalism". That column became syndicated from 1986 through 1995. In 1996, he returned to Time as a weekly columnist. To date the column has been collected in five books. His most recent book, Messages From My Father, which was published in 1996 as has become a best-seller. This is his 19th book. So far, his work has included two comic novels, a collection of short stories, a travel book, an account of desegregation at The University of Georgia, family memoirs, and three antic books on eating - American Fried, Alice- Lets Eat, and Third Helpings, - which have been compiled into a single volume called "The Tummy Trilogy"

TODAY In the sequel to his 2004 bestseller, “Obliviously On He Sails,” Calvin Trillin continues to take on the Bush administration in “Heckuva Job: More of the Bush Administration in Rhyme.” The best-selling writer became the deadline poet for the weekly journal, The Nation, in 1990 and has also written verse on the events of the day for the New Yorker, the New York Times and National Public Radio. He has said that he believes in an inclusive political system that prohibits from public office only those whose names have awkward meter or are difficult to rhyme. Trillin was invited on “Today” to talk about his latest collection of verse. Read an excerpt: “Brownie, you're doing a heckuva job!”

The pair go on to talk about Trillin's life, how he works and where he writes. Trillin worked as a reporter for Time magazine, as a staff writer for The New Yorker and knows most of the ins and outs of East Coast cuisine. As a journalist, he found himself naturally drawn to stories of crime and murder. He believes people today have a fixation on violence in our society. They also discuss the reasons why today's culture has embraced and almost nurtured the amount of violence in our lives, whether it is on the street or on TV. The Post Where You Get To Live Calvin Trillin's "Come Hungry" Tour Vicariously
I've wrestled with the Calvin Trillin in my head for hours and I have come up with the following conclusion: (1) I can do this post because (a) Calvin Trillin's "Come Hungry" tour isn't about giving away secrets it's about (i) spending time with Calvin Trillin, (ii) having food presented to you without having to wait for it, and (iii) enjoying the most exclusive, sought after New Yorker Festival experience you can have next to watching John Updike's interpretative dance on the more subtle aspects of "Madame Bovary." In other words, doing this post will not diminish or hurt this tour's popularity: I'm merely going to share with the masses what happens when you go on the tour, what you see, hear and eat, and it will most likely (i) make people want to go on the tour more than they did before and (ii) clue people into some great New York eats. And so, Calvin Trillin In My Head, consider yourself pinned. Here's an in-depth account of the "Come Hungry" tour. [Note: The picture above is from a set of press pictures sent to me by Emily of Emdashes , the New Yorker blog. She is eagerly awaiting the account I'm about to write. Arthur Bryant's legendary Kansas City BBQ started here and continues today!
This BBQ legend was founded in the early 1920's, by Charlie Bryant, Arthur's older brother. When Charlie died, Arthur took over and moved the BBQ restaurant to 18th and Brooklyn, just four blocks away from Municipal stadium, the home of the Kansas City Blues, followed by the Kansas City Athletics. Municipal Stadium was also the first home of the Kansas City Chiefs.
With the move near to the ball park, it became a nationally known eatery. Major league players ate there and fans would stop in before the games to eat on the premises or take out to the ball park. The fame of Arthur Bryant's grew. Then renowned author Calvin Trillin declared in Playboy magazine that "...the single best restaurant in the world is Arthur Bryant's Barbeque at 18th & Brooklyn in Kansas City."

Terence Smith has a conversation with Calvin Trillin about the issues raised by the conduct and investigation of President Clinton in the Monica Lewinsky matter. This is the last in a series . You may listen to this segment in RealAudio.
JIM LEHRER: Finally tonight, the last - for a while at least - in our series of conversations about the issues raised by the conduct and the investigation of President Clinton in the Monica Lewinsky matter. We have talked to Stephen Carter, Orlando Patterson, William F. Buckley, Deborah Tannen, and Shelby Steele. Terence Smith has tonight's. TERENCE SMITH: With me now is Calvin Trillin, also known as "Bud," staff writer for the New Yorker and a columnist for Time Magazine. He's also the author of several books, the most recent entitled "Family Man." Bud Trillin, welcome. I believe you made a recent discovery that you and your wife, Alice, are not, after all, members of the Eastern elite but, in fact, the American people, in caps. CALVIN TRILLIN, Author: That's absolutely right. We reflect perfectly the survey showing what the American people believe about the Lewinsky affair, and so we no longer wait for the polls. I just Alice, what do you think of that, and if I think the same thing, that's it.

Since its founding in 1971, Chez Panisse has inspired many enthusiastic eaters to the seasonal pleasures of the table. Alice Waters has more than good eating and unadorned ingredients in mind, however; her culinary ventures seek social and environmental change. Waters furthers her vision through several books and community-based projects, notably the Edible Schoolyard Project at Martin Luther King Jr. Middle School in Berkeley. About Alice - and Ida and Julie
Reading Calvin (Bud) Trillin’s About Alice , his loving portrait of his wife, Alice, who died September 11, 2001 and the life they shared, triggered my recall of Studs Terkel’s lament on the loss of his wife, Ida, less than three weeks after Julie’s death,
Who will laugh at my jokes? I know what you mean, Studs. And, I’d wager, so does Bud.
    An Audience Of One
The notion of an audience of one is promoted by many fundamentalist Christians who focus their energies exclusively on pleasing God and by a number of marketing consultants who instruct clients and devise campaigns to communicate with the individual consumer. For some of us, however, the audience of one is the person with whom we share our bed and raise our family. Consider this passage from a column written by Garry Wills two weeks after the death of Ida Terkel:
He [Studs Terkel] called her [Ida Terkel] his best critic, and always sought the supreme accolade from the one person who was not flustered by his fame.
