Born in Cooma, New South Wales, Tranter was educated at the University of Sydney , and has worked as a publisher, and in radio, for the Australian Broadcasting Company (ABC). Tranter’s early poetry can be found gathered in Selected Poems (1982); subsequent volumes are Under Berlin The Floor of Heaven At the Florida (1993), and Late Night Radio (1998). As an editor and anthologist he indulged his penchant for the avant-garde and experimental in The New Australian Poetry (1979). Tranter’s work has been ostensibly counter-cultural , eschewing Australian traditions as parochial, and taking an internationalist approach to literary style and influence, mainly American. His work bears obvious similarities to that by New York School poets such as John Ashbery and Frank O’Hara, taking a tricksy Postmodern line, and writing poems that are as much about art and communication itself as about anything distinct and concrete, as in this final sestet from “Sonnet 35”: The girl is an artefact, the problem

Sex, drugs and country and western — all ingredients of this quasi-thriller in verse by one of Australia's most highly regarded poets, John Tranter , which is now published for the first time in the UK. A biker's moll, a real-estate shark, a Vietnam veteran who can't forget, an Australian artist fighting drugs and despair in New York... In four interlinked tales, these vividly-drawn characters and their friends, lovers and enemies re-invent themselves as they search for love against a background of passion, ambition, risk, betrayal and death.
“A poet writing at the peak of his powers... reminded me irresistibly of the best moments in Twin Peaks.” Sydney Morning Herald
“Stories that are elegantly linked not only by some of the characters but by images and signatures — the swish of tyres in the rain, the hint of perfume... A hypnotic read.” Australian Book Review
“A rattling good read.”

    58. John Kinsella: Poet, Novelist, Critic, And Journal Editor
You ll find good work from john tranter, john Forbes, Jennifer Maiden, and Robert Adamson. There is also fine work, from the flipside of the coin,
    http://www.johnkinsella.org/essays/idiosync.html
Idiosyncrasy and the Craft of Poetry: On Les Murray's The New Oxford Book Of Australian Verse and Peter Porter's The Oxford Book Modern Australian Poetry In terms of Australian poetry and its place in the English-language poetry canon, Australia is a fiercely protectionist place. And protectionism has been a strong part of its social and economic history as well. I find it interesting, as an advocate of deregulation, not only within the English-speaking world but between all national and idiolectical poetries, that the first question one feels one must ask when reviewing anthologies of national verse is: in what way are they representative of the poetry that has been or is being written in that country? But also - and this is especially relevant in the case of Les Murray's The New Oxford Book Of Australian Verse - how representative of a culture, per se, are they? Les Murray is a well known cultural sovereigntist, but at no time does he see the "island" of Australian poetry existing without connection to the rest of the world. Murray is a widely-read poet here in England, one who has developed his own readership while retaining his particular vernacular. And Peter Porter, editor of The Oxford Book Of Modern Australian Verse , is an expatriate Australian, who is as much at home among English poets as he is among Australians. In many ways, this combination is ideally suited to painting a portrait of Australian poetry that is as readable in England or elsewhere as it is "back home". The point would largely be irrelevant if these were anthologies published only in Australia, but they have been released here in the UK as well by Oxford.

ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF VICKI VIIDIKAS
    By Stephen Oliver
Jesus said, "If one blind person leads another blind person,
both of them will fall into a hole." - The Gospel of Thomas: saying 34
A sharp deflection of the gin-glass slashed across my knuckles. Four little red crescents. Four neat, upturned cuts bright as smiles. The day had started out as these things do - pleasantly enough, in a couple of the Newtown pubs; The Courthouse, corner Lennox and Australia Streets, then steadied at the Sandringham Hotel, past the Newtown train station, at the Erskineville end of King Street. The incident took place in the early evening at a 'boutiqued' working man's cottage in the gentrified, middle-class suburb of Balmain. This was home to one of the middling 'beat' mandarins of the '60s generation who had never left the area. The year was 1988, three years into my seven year tenure in Newtown. Somewhere, it was the end of an era for somebody. Still young enough to risk my balance, I had not yet reached forty. I felt like a man upright and cruciform, arms outstretched, on the roof carriage of an express train hell-bent. Like Jon Voight in the 1985 movie, Runaway Train - hurtling headlong into the blizzard and oblivion.
