John Kinsella interviews JOHN TRANTER John Kinsella: Could you talk about your early years. John Tranter: I was born in 1943 in Cooma, a little town in the south-eastern mountains of Australia. My father taught in a one-teacher school in the nearby village of Bredbo. It's high country around there, long rolling grassy hills, and pretty much unpopulated. I remember my mother saying that a hot wind blew all summer long, full of dust; in the winter a bitter cold wind, and sometimes snow. We moved to the coastal town of Moruya when I was about four; the climate there was more Californian. I fell out of the car on the drive to Moruya, late at night. It's almost my earliest memory. On a bend in the dirt road the passenger-side door came open by accident - the car was an old Chevrolet sedan. I'd been asleep in my mother's arms. I fell onto the road and bounced through the blackberries into a ditch. I can still remember staggering to my feet, covered with blood from the gash in my head, and seeing the tail-light disappearing around a bend. It took them a moment or two to realise what had happened, and stop the car. For those few endless seconds it felt very lonely there in the dark.

In addition to performing regularly with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra , Mr. Tranter has also performed with the Minnesota Opera, the JazzMN Big Band, and many touring Broadway shows at local venues. He is also serving as solo euphonium with the Sheldon Theatre Brass Band. Outside of Minnesota, he has also performed and/or recorded with Symphonia (America’s first professional tuba-euphonium ensemble), Orquesta Sinf³nica de Trujillo (Perº), the Palm Beach Opera, the Kansas City Symphony Brass Quintet, and the American Wind Symphony. During the 1999-2000 academic year, Mr. Tranter was the trombonist of the Skyline Brass, an ensemble-in-residence at Drake University, Iowa State University and Grinnell College (funded by the National Endowment for the Arts/Chamber Music America program). Mr. Tranter has also served as an Adjunct Professor of Low Brass and Concordia University—Saint Paul and Normandale Community College.

At the time of this interview, Tranter was working on another anthology with fellow poet Philip Mead (then editor of Meanjin) compiling The Penguin Book of Modern Australian Poetry, which appeared at the end of 1990.The web was still everyman's dream and Tranter's wonderful Jacket Magazine (ISSN: 1440-4737) was not yet born. This is the original transcript of the interview that appeared in Famous Reporter n.4, April 1990. A shortened version appeared in The Saturday Mercury on 10 February 1990 (p.18).
