Hi all, thought I would throw this one in - I have not been researching the Tranter side but thought some here may recognise the following: My grandfather John Tranter emigrated from Australia to New Zealand before 1936. He married Rose in 1937. They had 12 children, I have been tracing on my grandmother's side so detail on granddad is terrible. The aunts and uncles are scattered far and wide so tracking them down is as hard!
From recollection granddad died in the late 70's; Rose died in 1990.
I can only guess that John was a second generation Aussie as there is no verbal history that says he came from England, so perhaps his parents did? The only other clue is the eldest son bears the second name Stewart - perhaps his father's father's christian name?
Clues and detail gratefully accepted.

LOST THINGS IN THE GARDEN OF TYPE
John Tranter
I WENT TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE recently, to visit my Aunt Helene. She's getting on now. When she was still a relatively young woman she gave up her typographic practice and moved to a retirement village, the Home for the Disappointed on the little island of San Serife, in the Mediterranean. The people in Bembo, the only town on the island, are mainly employed in the printing and publishing industries, so she feels at home there. Aunt Helene has her own cottage, with a garden out the back: she calls it the Garden of Type. It's a place for abandoned things, she says, and typefaces that have been lost and then found again. When the weather's misty she wanders down there in her slippers and turns over the soil and kicks things around. Nothing seemed to grow there now, and I asked her what the garden was for. 'To remind me to remember to remember,' Aunt Helene explained. 'Soon I'll be the only one left who remembers what metal type looked like, or what blotting paper was for.' 'You sound like Henry Miller,' I said. 'I remember he wrote a book called

Piggott’s Directory 1822-3 BROSELEY COALBROOK-DALE, COALPORT, IRON-BRIDGE AND MADELEY. BROSELEY Hannah Guest is Post Mistress.- The Post leaves for Shiffnal (where it meets the London and Holyhead mails) every morning at a quarter before five, and returns every evening at half past four o’clock.: COALBROOK-DALE situated about two miles from Madeley, is a winding glen, between two vast hills which break into various forms with beautiful hanging woods. Here and in the neighbourhood, are the most considerable iron works in England; the forges mills and steam engines with all their vast machinery, the flaming furnaces, and smoking lime kilns, form. a spectacle, horribly sublime; while the stupendous iron arch, striding over the Severn, gives these scenes a yet nearer resemblance to the ideas in romance. This famous bridge was built in the year 1779, the whole having been previously cast in open sand; all the principal parts were erected in three months, without any accident to the work or workmen, or the least obstruction to the navigation of the river. COALPORT two miles from hence is chiefly noted for its celebrated china manufactory which is well worthy the minute inspection of the visitant; as indeed is the whole of this curious and romantic neighbourhood. About two miles from hence arc the ruins of Buildwas abbey.

In January 1996, we combined our small shop in Dee Why with the larger neighbouring shop and created a bookshop with the space our books demanded. In October 1999, we started with a moderate 1234 books on the internet. Today we have around 30'000 book titles online and our website handles many orders each day, locally and internationally. Operating a shop, a warehouse, an office and a store room, all in different places, proved to be very difficult. July 2002: Dee Why Books has become a member of The Australian and New Zealand Association of Antiquarian Book dealers and International League of Antiquarian Booksellers ANZAAB/ILAB-LILA.
