Jaime
boyNameId = '117371'; Meaning: Its source is Iacobus, a Latin name meaning "One who grasps by the heel or supplanter." Languages: This boy's name is used in Portuguese and Spanish. Popularity: The name Jaime ranked 254th in popularity for males of all ages in a sample of 2000-2003 Social Security Administration statistics and 267th in popularity for males of all ages in a sample of the 1990 US Census. Narrative: Iacobus is a Latin translation of Yaakov , the Hebrew source of the name Jacob. This explains the terms Jacobean (used to describe the reign of Britain's James I) and Jacobite (a name for supporters of that king's descendants in their attempts to regain the throne lost by James II). James has been a popular name for many generations. While its association with two of Christ's disciples explains some of its popularity among Christians, the 20th century has celebrated a wealth of stars named James, ranging from James Cagney to James Dean. Ian Fleming's master spy James Bond has also given the name a boost over the last few decades.

Jaime Torres Bodet , 1902-74, Mexican poet, diplomat, short-story writer, and essayist. Torres Bodet's first book of poems, Fervor (1918), reveals the influence of symbolism and modernismo, but his later poetry shows the effect of the European avant-garde and is cosmopolitan in tone. However worthy, such pet projects did not seem altogether pertinent to UNESCO's director general, Jaime Torres Bodet, Mexico's able former Minister of Education, who is an impatient man. Cracked one UNESCO representative last week: "For Torres Bodet, manana means today." Bodet had a pet project of his own—nothing more nor less than peace. He favored a Yugoslav suggestion for an international intellectual congress for peace, a Belgian proposal to form a committee to study the effects of new weapons, a Czech plan to outlaw atomic weapons. When the conference rejected these projects, Bodet got sore. Cried Bodet: "I ask the conference to place on the agenda the selection of my successor." Conscience Examined. With only four days of the conference left, a group of delegates got together in a secret midnight session, next day brought forth a petition, signed by 35 countries, urging Torres Bodet to reconsider his resignation. He received a similar cabled appeal from the U.N.'s Trygve Lie. He agreed to return to his job. Said Bodet in a closing speech: "It has been a conference of an examination of conscience . . . That, of course, is not everything, but is very much . . ."

    The Window Jaime Torres Bodet
Translated from the Spanish by George Kearns
You closed the window. And it was the world, the world that wanted to enter, all at once, the world that gave that great shout, that great, deep, rough cry you did not want to hear-and now will never call to you again as it called today, asking your mercy!
The whole of life was in that cry: the wind, the sea, the land with its poles and its tropics, the unreachable skies, the ripened grain in the resounding wheat field, the thick heat above the wine presses, dawn on the mountains, shadowy woods,
parched lips stuck together longing for cool water condensed in pools, and all pleasures, all sufferings, all loves, all hates, were in this day, anxiously
But you were afraid of life. And you remained alone, behind the closed and silent window, not understanding that the world calls to a man only once that way, and with that kind
