Russian novelist. He wrote War and Peace Anna Karenina Tolstoy was born to a noble family at Yasnaya Polyana, near Tula, but was orphaned at the age of nine. He studied at Kazan University, but left before graduating. In 1851 he joined the Russian forces in the Caucasus, and fought in the Crimean War, taking part as an artillery officer in the defence of Sevastopol. While in the Caucasus he wrote the autobiographical Childhood and Boyhood . He arrived in St Petersburg in 1855, and was received with admiration in the literary circles of the capital as a new star of Russian letters. During the next two years he published Tales from Sevastopol , which exposed and cut down romantic ideas of martial bravery, and Youth War and Peace and Anna Karenina . By the time he finished the latter Tolstoy had approached a spiritual crisis, which in the following years was resolved by his working out a new religious and social teaching based on renunciation of violence, wealth, and sex, a need for inner self-improvement, and love for all living things. The fame of his teaching soon spread beyond Russia, and Yasnaya Polyana became a place of pilgrimage. However, Tolstoy himself felt increasingly estranged from it and from his family, who did not share his views. Unable to reconcile his ideal of simple life with the atmosphere of his family estate, he secretly left Yasnaya Polyana and died ten days later.

of Russia’s Greatest Novelist
“The hero of my tale, whom I love with all the power of my soul, whom I have tried to portray in all its beauty, who has been, is, and will be beautiful, is Truth."
- Leo Tolstoy, "Sevastopol in May", 1855
What makes Leo Tolstoy relevant even today, even to the most contemporary audience, is that Tolstoy was not just a great writer. He was also a great and inspirational teacher of life. Leo Tolstoy wanted his books to be read by everybody, not just by a select few. Tolstoy’s writing is remarkably unstuffy. He wrote fiction to share his insatiable love of life and to tackle the eternal questions: Who am I? Why am I here? What will make me happy? Tolstoy doesn’t give readers the answers to life’s vexing problems, but he gives you something even more valuable. He gives readers such an appreciation of the truth and totality of life that you feel enlarged as a human being. After you read Tolstoy, you feel spiritually uplifted and intellectually empowered to seek out the answers to life’s vexing questions on your own.
Professor Andy takes you on a journey through the mind, soul, and art Russia’s greatest novelist. In his writing and speaking about Tolstoy, Andy combines both scholarly expertise and strong passion, and he talks about Tolstoy in the same way that Tolstoy himself wrote about life: with honesty, clarity, and deep sensitivity.

Leo Tolstoy
Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy (September 9, 1828 - November 20, 1910,) was a Russian novelist, social reformer, pacifist, Christian anarchist, vegetarian, moral thinker and an influential member of the Tolstoy family.
Tolstoy is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all novelists, particularly noted for his masterpieces War and Peace and Anna Karenina; in their scope, breadth and realistic depiction of Russian life, the two books stand at the peak of realistic fiction.
As a moral philosopher he was notable for his ideas on nonviolent resistance through his work The Kingdom of God is Within You. Tolstoy was one of the giants of 19th century Russian literature.
His autobiographical novels, Childhood, Boyhood, and Youth (1852-1856), his first publications, tell of a rich landowner's son and his slow realization of the differences between him and his peasant playmates. Although in later life Tolstoy rejected these books as sentimental, a great deal of his own life is revealed, and the books still have relevance for their telling of the universal story of growing up.
Tolstoy served as a second lieutenant in an artillery regiment during the Crimean War , recounted in his Sevastapol Sketches. He took part in the battles and showed incomparable courage. During the War he was awarded by orders and medals. His experiences in battle helped develop his pacifism, and gave him material for realistic depiction of the horrors of war in his later work.

Leo Tolstoy - What Men Live By and Other Tales Podcast
by David Barnes
Although Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) was a wealthy landowner, in his later life he had what was considered a "religious awakening." This experience went on to inform his writing and his lifestyle in profound ways. His views transcended the specifics of religion, as known in his day —so much so he came to be a helpful guide both to Mohandas Gandhi and to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The four stories in this collection ask profound questions and gently supply helpful, non-dogmatic hints to their answerings: What is the most important thing to do? Who is the most important person? When is the most important time? What is worth owning? What is the most profound religion? What rules should men live by? How much land does a man need? Who is God? What should we bother to discuss? How should we act towards one another? How should we respond to cruelty and violence? And many more. Four of Tolstoy's wonderful stories written in a relaxed style. These recording were made for LibriVox.org.

Nineteenth Century Russian Novel
recommended reading: 1800-1900
Russia has a rich literary tradition which stretches from the early nineteenth century to the present day. Its great writers have done particularly well with the novel, allowing themselves to be influenced by other strong traditions, such as the British and French. Alexander Pushkin is the father of modern Russian literature - a witty, sophisticated writer. He was principally a poet, but his masterwork is in fact a novel - written in verse. Eugene Onegin (1831) is the story of a clever but bored aristocrat who charms a young woman Tatiana so much that she writes a letter declaring her love to him. He rejects her and continues with his bachelor existence. But years later, on meeting her again, he realises what he has missed. He asks for a second chance, but his time, despite the fact that she still loves him, it is she who rejects him.
The novel exists in many translations, including the monumentally scholarly production by

I know that most men, including those at ease with problems of the greatest complexity, can seldom accept even the simplest and most obvious truth if it be such as would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have delighted in explaining to colleagues, which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabric of their lives.

And by the examples of the superior court and district court, criminal court and the court of arbitration Tolstoy illustrated the Christian doctrine condemning the State's principle of violent retaliation: Tolstoy realized that he would face stern resistance from two groups of people belonging to quite different ideological camps: Not the annihilation of evil but the increase of injustice has been the result of the law of violence in the social, political and economical field of human life: Tolstoy condemned the law of violence. He revealed the law of love, benevolence and conscience. Scaling the Mount Everest of literature through print and audio editions War and Peace. By Leo Tolstoy. Translated by Constance Garnett. Modern Library, 1,386 pages, $24.95. By Janice Harayda Reading War and Peace is like walking into a large cocktail party at which you don’t know anybody until, hours later, Napoleon turns up fresh from his victory in the Battle of Austerlitz. How do you get your bearings on a novel that has more than 500 characters and, even in the relatively compact Modern Library edition, 1,386 pages? More than most masterpieces, War and Peace asks you to make a leap of faith and repays the effort. The characters who at first swarm at you in a mob soon coalesce into sets. Chief among them are three well-to-do families – the Rostovs, the Bezuhovs and the Bolkonskys – whose fates rise and fall in the years just before and after Napoleon’s disastrous march on Moscow in the winter of 1812. Tolstoy’s fondness for this theme involves digressions that have defeated many readers. Listening to an unabridged audio edition may help you ride out the philosophical and historical detours from the plot. A recorded version will also give you pronunciations of those 500 Russian or other names, and could add far drama to your commute than any all-news radio station. The radio may give you reports of one-alarm blazes in dumpsters. Tolstoy gives you: “The valet on going in informed the count that Moscow was on fire.”

Early Life and Works
Print this section Leo Nikolayevich Tolstoy was born into a family of aristocratic landowners at Yasnaya Polyana, the family estate south of Moscow. His early education came from tutors at home, but after the deaths of his parents in the 1830s he was raised by relatives. INTRODUCTION
Tolstoy is regarded as one of the greatest novelists in the history of world literature. His Voina i mir (War and Peace) and Anna Karenina are almost universally acknowledged as all-encompassing documents of human existence and supreme examples of the realistic novel. Tolstoy is also considered a major religious and philosophic thinker, germs of which can be seen in his earlier fiction, but which ultimately came to fruition after the spiritual crisis he underwent beginning with deep depression in 1875. Characterized chiefly by his devotion to a close and literal reading of the Gospels of Christ, Tolstoy's religious convictions led him to a life of personal asceticism and social action that influenced Christian thinking around the world, and had a major impact on the thought and works of such social activists as Mohandas K. Gandhi in India and Jane Addams in the United States.
    Biographical Information
Tolstoy was born in 1828 to a wealthy family who resided just outside of Moscow. After his mother died in 1830 and his father in 1837, Tolstoy's upbringing and education fell into the hands of relatives, who hired private tutors for him. In 1844 he entered Kazan University, but failed to earn a degree. He returned to the family estate, Yasnaya Polyana, in 1847 to manage the affairs there. Dissatisfied, Tolstoy joined the army in 1851, seeing active service in the Caucasus and in the siege of Sevastopol during the Crimean War, which he later wrote about in his

Although he was born into nobility, Tolstoy spent much of his life as a champion of Russia's peasant class, notably in the field of education. He began his literary career in the 1850s, publishing a trilogy about his own life: Childhood Detstvo Boyhood Otrochestvo , 1854) and Youth Yunost' , 1857).
