American Classics J. R. R. Tolkien Biography J.R.R. Tolkien is now more famous than ever for being the man behind the Lord of the Rings trilogy of books. He is also the author of such classics as the Hobbit and the Silmarillion. Originally born in South Africa, his family soon moved to England after the sudden death of his father. As he came of age, Tolkien nurtured what would become a life-long interest in the natural landscape and the european languages. He served in World War One as a communications officer, and the experience of seeing his friends die amidst the horror of modern warfare was a major influence on what he would write about later in life. From 1924 to 1959 Tolkien taught the english language at various colleges, culminating in a 20 year tenure at Oxford. Starting with "The Book of Lost Tales", written while the author was healing from trench fever, Tolkien went about creating a mythology based in an environment he dubbed middle-earth. It was his version of ancient european history set in a land where gods walked among men and dark forces waged continual warfare. With this series of timeless classics, Tolkien became the godfather of high-fantasy literature. Following his death in 1973, Tolkien's Middle-Earth stories have continued to endure as primary 20th century texts and have found new audiences with each successive generation. LearnOutLoud.com encourages you to come see what all the excitement is about and explore Tolkien's incredible world on audio.

A PHILOLOGIST ON ESPERANTO
by J. R. R. TOLKIEN
I take an interest, as a philologist, and as every philologist should, in the international-language movement, as an important and interesting linguistic phenomenon, and am sympathetic to the claims of Esperanto in particular. I am not a practical Esperantist, as it seems to me on reflection an adviser should at least in some measure be. I can neither write nor speak the language. I know it, as a philologist would say, in that 25 years ago ( ) I learned and have not forgotten its grammar and structure, and at one time read a fair amount written in it, and since I am trained to that sort of thing, I feel competent to have an opinion concerning the defects and excellencies. That being so, I feel that I could make no useful contribution, except as a philologist and critic. But it is precisely my view of the international language situation, that such services, however good in theory, are in practice not wanted; in fact, that a time has come when the philological theorist is a hindrance and a nuisance. This is indeed the strongest of my motives for supporting Esperanto. ( Actually, it seems to me, too, that technical improvement of the machinery, either aiming at greater simplicity and perspicuity of structure, or at greater internationality, or what not, tends (to judge by recent examples) to destroy the "humane" or aesthetic aspect of the invented idiom. This apparently unpractical aspect appears to be largely overlooked by theorists; though I imagine it is not really unpractical, and will have ultimately great influence on the prime matter of universal acceptance. To one [C.S. Lewis] who said that myths were lies and therefore worthless, even though 'breathed through silver'. Philomythus to Misomythus You look at trees and label them just so,
(for trees are 'trees', and growing is 'to grow');
you walk the earth and tread with solemn pace
one of the many minor globes of Space:
a star's a star, some matter in a ball
compelled to courses mathematical
amid the regimented, cold, inane,
where destined atoms are each moment slain. At bidding of a Will, to which we bend
(and must), but only dimly apprehend,
great processes march on, as Time unrolls
from dark beginnings to uncertain goals; and as on page o'er-written without clue, with script and limning packed of various hue, an endless multitude of forms appear, some grim, some frail, some beautiful, some queer, each alien, except as kin from one remote Origo, gnat, man, stone, and sun. God made the petreous rocks, the arboreal trees, tellurian earth, and stellar stars, and these homuncular men, who walk upon the ground with nerves that tingle touched by light and sound.

http://www.lord-of-the-rings.org/author.html
About J.R.R. Tolkien John Ronald Reuel Tolkien, a very talented writer, is famous for having created such a literary genre as fantasy. All his books are real masterpieces, and many having read them once, want to read them again and again. Warm-hearted and exciting adventure stories, involving people, elves, dwarves, orcs, goblins, wizards, and, of course, hobbits are in Tolkien’s accounts. But not only fantastic beings were concocted by him. Both philologist and professor at Oxford University, he knew many ancient and modern languages. Thus, a new world – Middle-earth, along with its geography, its history, and several languages appeared. The history of this world goes into the depth of millenniums and stretches four epochs starting from the act of creation. J.R.R. Tolkien was born on 3rd January 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State. When he was four years old his mother, Marry Suffield, and his younger brother Hilary, went to England. At that time his father was ill and soon died of rheumatic fever. After his father’s death the family lived at Sarehole, on the south-eastern edge of Birmingham. Ronald spent his childhood there and later scenes from this area would be depicted in his pictures and writings. Another tragic event occurred when J.R.R. Tolkien was 12 – the death of his mother who died of diabetes. He and his brother Hilary became wards of a priest at the Birmingham Oratory. The boys attended King Edward’s School in Birmingham. At school Ronald was interested in Classic as well as Anglo-Saxon and Middle English. At that time he began to develop his linguistic talent by creating his own languages with grammar and history. Not surprisingly that Tolkien was First in English Language and Literature at Exeter College.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien ("Ronald" to his family and friends) was born on January 3, 1892 in Bloemfontain, South Africa. His parents had moved there from England so that his father, Arthur, could work for the bank of Africa. Ronald lost both parents early in lifeArthur died in Africa in 1896, after the rest of the family had returned to England, and his wife, Mabel, died in 1904 near Birmingham, England. After Mabel's death, Ronald and his younger brother Hilary came under the care of Father Francis Morgan, a friend of the family. Soon after, Ronald went to King Edwards School and then Oxford. At Oxford, Tolkien pursued a degree in English Language and Literature. He developed a particular passion for philology, the study of languages. While studying Old English, Anglo-Saxon, and Welsh poetry, he began to develop a language of his ownthe language that would form thegroundwork for his imagined world of Middle-Earth. By 1916, Tolkien had received his degree and married his childhood sweetheart, Edith Bratt. He eventually took a teaching position at Oxford; by 1929, he had his fourth child with Edith.

The essential guide for online writers, editors and managers June 3 J R R Tolkien was an information architect By Gerry McGovern Information architecture is concerned with the organization and layout of content. It is a discipline that has evolved over centuries, finding its roots in writing and printing. J R R Tolkien was a master information architect. He created complex genealogical and geographical architectures. If you want to master information architecture you need to acquire the type of skills Tolkien exhibits. Currently, I'm reading The Lord of the Rings to my son. It is a stunning work that mixes an age-old plot good versus evil with fabulous worlds and rich characters. Something that continuously takes my breath away is Tolkien's mastery of genealogy and geography. The genealogical lineage of the characters is awesome. It must have taken Tolkien years to develop all the family trees. The geographical landscape is rich and stunning. Putting each town, village, river, mountain and open plain in its proper place is an act of incredible cartography.
