Studies on the Works of J.R.R. Tolkien
Despite not knowing much about the topic, I have sometimes ventured to write about Tolkien's invented languages and writing systems. A shorter collection of similar writings in Finnish can be found at Kirjoituksia Tolkienin kielistä ja kirjoitusjärjestelmistä

Translations
To my knowledge, two translations of "Are High Elves Finno-Ugric?" are in existence. An Italian translation by Raffaella Benvenuto has been published on the Eldalie.it website. A translation into Polish by Karolina Stopa-Olszanska and Tadeusz A. Olszanski has appeared in 16 (published in late 2003) and, with corrections, in Aiglos 1 (early 2004). I speak neither of these languages, but it seems clear that both translations have been prepared with much greater care and erudition than the original article. I thank the translators and editors for showing such interest in my writings.

J.R.R. Tolkien Photo of Tolkien John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born in 1892 in Blomfontein, South Africa, where his father was a branch bank manager.
At the age of three, Ronald's health caused him, his mother, and his brother Hilary to return to England, where they settled in Sarehole, a small county village on the outskirts of Birmingham. His father died soon after, and then his mother when he was twelve. Tolien's early education was at King Edward's School in Birmingham, where he showed some considerable potential in languages and Old English literature.
He fell in love with Edith Bratt, also an orphan, during his last years at St. Edward's. In 1911 he entered Exeter College, Oxford, with a scholarship and received a First Class Honours degree in English in 1915. Immediately after graduation he entered the army.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) was a major scholar of the English language, specialising in Old and Middle English. Twice Professor of Anglo-Saxon (Old English) at the University of Oxford, he also wrote a number of stories, including most famously The Hobbit (1937) and The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), which are set in a pre-historic era in an invented version of the world which he called by the Middle English name of Middle-earth. This was peopled by Men (and women), Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, Orcs (or Goblins) and of course Hobbits. He has regularly been condemned by the Eng. Lit. establishment, with honourable exceptions, but loved by literally millions of readers worldwide. In the 1960s he was taken up by many members of the nascent "counter-culture" largely because of his concern with environmental issues. In 1997 he came top of three British polls, organised respectively by Channel 4 / Waterstone's, the Folio Society, and SFX, the UK's leading science fiction media magazine, amongst discerning readers asked to vote for the greatest book of the 20th century. Please note also that his name is spelt Tolkien (there is no "Tolkein"). ~ from The Tolkien Society

    compiled by Åke Bertenstam
The aim of the chronological bibliography given below is to give a complete record of Professor J.R.R. Tolkien's published writings: books, contributions to books, and contributions to periodicals. Some exceptions have had to be made to this stated intent, mainly for practical reasons. Thus the categories given below have been excluded.
    • Letters . Apart from Letters itself only the few letters to editors of publications that were published during Tolkien's lifetime have been listed (see the letters published in The Observer Catholic Herald Triode , and Daily Telegraph ). For a record of Tolkien's published letters, in whole or in extract, I refer to Hammond 1993 , section Dii, supplemented by further notes in The Tolkien Collector (see for example no. 6, 1993, p. 26 concerning a letter about Tolkien's views about Esperanto).
    • Illustrations and art . Only Pictures J.R.R. Tolkien: have been given, the latter on the strength that apart from reproducing a large number of Tolkien's pictures it also quotes some unpublished writings such as an essay on dragons. This means that all calendars, postcards, posters etc. have been omitted. For information about these I again refer to Hammond 1993 , section E.

    Who was JRR Tolkien?

JRR Tolkien is the famous author who wrote The Hobbit as well as The Lord of the Rings trilogy on which the blockbuster films are based. He was born as John Ronald Reul Tolkien on 3 January 1892 in a place called Bloemfontein, South Africa. When he was three, he and his mum moved to England. But he had quite a sad childhood because his dad died when he was four. Then when he was 12, his mum died. Because his parents had died, Tolkien and his brother were sent to live with their aunt in Birmingham. Tolkien died in 1973, but his name lives through the millions who read his books worldwide.

ADVERTISEMENT Our world would be poorer without two other worlds: Narnia and Middle-earth. Yet if two young professors had not met at an otherwise ordinary Oxford faculty meeting in 1926, those wondrous lands would still be unknown to us. British author Colin Duriez, who wrote the article "Tollers and Jack in issue #78 of Christian History , explains why this is so in his forthcoming book Tolkien and C. S. Lewis: The Gift of Friendship (Hidden Spring). Duriez tells the story of how these two brilliant authors met, discovered their common love for mythical tales, and pledged to bring such stories into the mainstream of public reading taste. Tolkien and Lewis shared the belief that through myth and legend—for centuries the mode many cultures had used to communicate their deepest truths—a taste of the Christian gospel's "True Myth" could be smuggled past the barriers and biases of secularized readers.
