General Information Online Descriptive Inventory Original Manuscripts Use of the Manuscripts ... Access and Services General Information
The collection of John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973), professor of Old and Middle English language and literature at Oxford University, 1925-1959, contains the original manuscripts and multiple working drafts for three of the author's most celebrated books, The Hobbit Farmer Giles of Ham (1949), and The Lord of the Rings (1954-1955), as well as the original copy of the children's book Mr. Bliss (published in facsimile form in 1982). The collection includes books by and about Tolkien, periodicals produced by Tolkien enthusiasts, audio and video recordings, and a host of published and unpublished materials relating to Tolkien's life and fantasy writings. Tolkien manuscripts reside at Marquette because of the vision of William B. Ready (1914-1981), director of libraries from 1956 to 1963. Ready was appointed with the understanding that he would aggressively collect material for the newly-constructed Memorial Library. He recognized The Lord of the Rings as a masterpiece soon after its publication, long before the work and its author gained enormous popularity. With administrative approval, Ready approached Tolkien in 1956 through Bertram Rota, a well-known rare book dealer in London. At the time, no other institution had expressed an interest in Tolkien's literary manuscripts. After a relatively brief period of negotiation, an agreement was reached whereby Marquette purchased the manuscripts for 1,500 pounds (or less than $5,000). The first shipment of material arrived in 1957;

    A Few Words About J. R. R. Tolkien
    Despite Professor Tolkien's immense fame, I will adopt the position that you have read neither Tolkien himself nor any sound book about him or his work. But before going on, I want to clear up a minor yet annoyingly common misunderstanding about his best-known piece of work: The Lord of the Rings is one novel divided internally into six "books" but published, purely for financial and logistic reasons, as three physical volumes. It is not a "trilogy."
    Tolkien's fame is based on a relatively small output if we judge output by a count of books, or even of pages. His two best-known works are The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings (or LOTR , as the tale is commonly called for brevity); in the same setting is their less-known and, I daresay, less-read successor (but only by date of publication) The Silmarillion . Beyond those three there are a very few very short unconnected tales, a couple of essays originally presented as lectures, some poetry, some critical notes of an academic nature. All in all, it's but a few inches on the bookshelf. By now, the books

    Welcome to the Tolkien Sarcasm Page!
    J.R.R. Tolkien, in writing his extraordinary books about Middle-earth, has succeeded in creating a world so finely-detailed and fully-realized that even now, over fifty years after The Lord of the Rings was first published, linguists and scholars still continue their avid research and debates about the world Tolkien has created. The Tolkien Sarcasm Page, one of the oldest bastions of Tolkien humor on the Web, is here to help Middle-earth historians everywhere take a break from those heated arguments about Glorfindel's bloodline and whether or not Thingol was a wise King. Instead, stop and relax for a little while with one of the following strange activities:

    "The Lord of the Rings" is lovingly crafted, seductive and profoundly backward-looking. Why not look at things through the Dark Lord's eye for a change? By David Brin Pages 1 This year, despite a clamor over the latest Harry Potter film, much of the attention is going to another fantasy called "The Two Towers" Part 2 in the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Will it succeed in distracting us for a while, conveying audiences to a world more beautiful and stirring than humdrum modern life? Naturally, I enjoyed the "Lord of the Rings" (LOTR) trilogy as a kid, during its first big boom in the 1960s. I mean, what was there not to like? As William Goldman said about another great fantasy, "The Princess Bride," it has "Fencing. Fighting. Torture. Poison. True Love. Hate. Revenge. Giants. Hunters. Bad Men. Good Men. Beautifulest Ladies. Spiders. Dragons. Eagles. Beasts of all natures and descriptions. Pain. Death. Magic. Chases. Escapes. Miracles." In 1997, voters in a BBC poll named "The Lord of the Rings" the greatest book of the 20th century. In 1999, Amazon.com customers chose it as the greatest book of the millennium.

    INTRODUCTION
    J.R.R. Tolkien was a creator of languages, worlds, peoples, and legends. One could easily believe that, from casual, elderly appearance with his fancy embroidered waistcoats and his wispy white hair, this was the man who had created the world, history, and people of Middle-Earth, the setting for the majority of his works. From his deep love of trees, to his boyhood imaginings of dragons and elves, J.R.R. Tolkien was and always would be a dreamer. Modeling his characters, events, and settings, Tolkien gave his world a feeling of reality, the feeling that such a world could possibly exist in the realm of imagination. The giant spider Shelob was modeled after a tarantula attack he had suffered at age three. Faithful Sam, Frodo's servant, took after a typical English soldier, loyal and stout-hearted. The Shire, Frodo's homeland, was a combination of the English country-side that was Tolkien's home, the peaceful forest, pleasant valleys, and comfortable homes. He even modeled the typical hobbit after himself. "I am, in fact, a hobbit in all but size. I like gardens, trees, and unmechanized farmlands; I smoke a pipe, and like good plain food... I do not travel much," (Commire, 214) he wrote of himself. Yes, indeed, it is easy to see how such a man was the creator of such world-renowned myths and legends.
