JRR Tolkien and Middle-earth
JRR Tolkien, creator of Middle-earth, was one of the greatest writers and scholars of the twentieth century. Generations of readers have been enthralled by his most famous creations The Hobbit The Lord of the Rings and The Silmarillion Scholars, meanwhile, have debated the true greatness (or lack) of these popular novels. Many have deemed it “mere escapism” and worse. Many others (including C.S. Lewis and W.H. Auden) found the books – and in particular The Lord of the Rings - to be masterpieces. Scholarly stalemates aside, Tolkien’s work remains as popular and vital today as when it first appeared. A 1997 poll by Waterstone’s (a British bookstore chain) voted Lord of the Rings as the Book of the Century . Several subsequent polls, both abroad and in the states, similarly place LOTR atop the list. Why? JRR Tolkien is one of those rare writers that can completely transport you with his pen, a feeling I get every time I wander the Withywindle valley with Frodo and company, or breakfast upon bread and mead in the house of Beorn with Bilbo and the dwarves.

John Ronald Reuel Tolkien (1892-1973) Professor of literature and English, who became famous with his novel THE LORD OF THE RINGS (1954-55). From the mid-1960s Tolkien's work started its world-wide triumph. Especially it appealed to young people. Tolkien's friend C.S. Lewis at University of Oxford also achieved fame as fantasy writer with his Narnia series. "Three rings for the Elven-kings under the sky,
Seven for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,
Nine for Mortal Men doomed to die,
One for the Dark Lord on his dark throne
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadow lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring the all in the darkness bind them In the Land of Mordor where the Shadow lie."
(from The Lord of the Rings John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born of British parents in Bloemfontein, South Africa, but moved with his mother, Mabel Tolkien, to England, at the age of was three. Tolkien lost his father when he was very young. In 1904 Tolkien's mother died, and the young John Ronald Reuel moved with his brother Hilary to aunt's home in Birmingham. From 1908 Tolkien studied at Oxford. In 1915 he was awarded First Class Honours degree in English Language and Literature. Next year Tolkien married Edith Bratt, whom he had met in 1908. During WW I Tolkien served in the army and saw action on the Somme. He returened home suffering from shell shock, and while convalescing he started to study early forms of language and work on SILMARILLION (published 1977). For the rest of his life, Tolkien expanded the mythology of his fantasy worlds.

The Children of Húrin
The first complete book by J.R.R. Tolkien in three decades
J.R.R. Tolkien started imagining the world and mythology of Middle-earth as early as 1916, and never ceased working on the stories and legends pertaining to this world until his death in 1973. Out of this gigantic and constantly revised Legendarium one tale in particular was published, like a window onto a moving landscape, The Lord of the Rings
The author wished for his third son, Christopher Tolkien, to become his literary executor after his death, and Christopher's first task was to organize the huge volume of papers that J.R.R. Tolkien had created during his lifetime ; the first published work on the subject to appear was The Silmarillion in 1977. This work is an outline of the story and mythology of Middle-earth in condensed form and, as such, gave tantalizing but very brief accounts of the creation of Middle-earth, the birth of Elves and of Men, and many individual tales of which not least was that of the Children of Húrin and the tragic life of Túrin Turambar.
Christopher Tolkien then pursued his study of his father's papers and developed in detail the history of the author's writings and the evolution of the mythical and legendary conceptions in the course of his lifetime, in

elcome to the Tolkien Timeline! ecause so much of the focus has been on his two most famous literary works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings , J.R.R. Tolkien appears to the casual reader as nothing more than an author of fantasy literature. He was, however, a very distinguished linguist and scholar. This compilation is a chronological list of important events relating to Tolkien's life, career, and scholarly pursuits, and attempts to provide a more clear picture of this astounding man. The full bibliography explains the abbreviated references used in this document. The Pre-Tolkien Era (up to 1892)
The Big Bang, dinosaurs roamed the Earth, the ice age struck, Moses parted the Red Sea, Tolkien was born. This was quite a significant era in the history of the world. The Early Years
Tolkien's life, from childhood to marriage. A somewhat unhappy, disiplined time, but one which no doubt shaped the greatness of this man. The Lord of the Rings
This was a very prolific time for the Oxford professor, both academically, and personally. His fantastic vision of a place called Middle-earth continued to expand, giving birth to both The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings The Post-Oxford Years
Tolkien continued to work on both his languages and stories, long after his retirement from Oxford, right up until his death in 1973.

(John Ronald Reuel Tolkien) Search Authors Search Books About J R R Tolkien John Ronald Reuel Tolkien was born on the 3rd January, 1892 at Bloemfontein in the Orange Free State, but at the age of four he and his brother were taken back to England by their mother. After his father's death the family moved to Sarehole, on the south-eastern edge of Birmingham. Tolkien spent a happy childhood in the countryside and his sensibility to the rural landscape can clearly be seen in his writing and his pictures. His mother died when he was only twelve and both he and his brother were made wards of the local priest and sent to King Edward's School, Birmingham, where Tolkien shone in his classical work. After completing a First in English Language and Literature at Oxford, Tolkien married Edith Bratt. He was also commissioned in the Lancashire Fusiliers and fought in the battle of the Somme. After the war, he obtained a post on the 'New English Dictionary' and began to write the mythological and legendary cycle which he originally called 'The Book of Lost Tales' but which eventually became known as 'The Silmarillion'.

Brief Biography of John Ronald Reul Tolkien
Early Life J.R.R. Tolkien
Although a scholar at King Edward VI school, he failed to win a scholarship to Oxford. His guardian, Father Xavier, put this down to his burgeoning romance with his childhood sweetheart, Edith. Father Xavier, thus, made John promise not to see Edith until he was 21. John agreed to his request, and faithfully waited until his 21st birthday. On this date he renewed his contact with Edith, and successfully persuaded her to marry him. It is a testament to his belief in faithfulness and honesty, that he was willing to wait several years to meet his wife; such sentiments of nobility appear frequently in his writings; for example, the magnificent love story of Beren and Luthien.
J.R.R.Tolkien in Oxford
From an academic point of view, his separation from Edith seemed to do the trick, and a year later he won an exhibition to Exeter College, Oxford where he would study classics. John did not particularly shine in this subject, and decided to switch to English literature. He was a competent scholar, but a lot of his time was spent researching other languages in the Bodleian library. It was here in Oxford that he became fascinated with Finnish, a language which would form the basis for Quenya; a language he would later give to his Elves. His love of languages remained with Tolkien throughout his life; in particular, he began developing his own languages, a remarkable undertaking. In fact, in later commented that languages lied at the heart of his writings; the Silmarillion and Lord of the Rings. He actually said, the stories existed to provide an opportunity to use the languages. Devotees of the book may not agree, but it does illustrate the profound importance he attached to the use of languages.

A Tribute to J.R.R. Tolkien
J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Lord of the Rings The Hobbit as well as other works. His works created an absorbing fantasy world which spanwed Dungeons and Dragons, and inspired a huge following. If you've never read The Lord of the Rings , then first read The Hobbit (which is a fun story) if you haven't already. The Lord of the Rings is an epic, a masterpiece. It may seem like a lot of pages to read, but when you're done, you'll be sad there are no more. I think J.R.R. Tolkien has had a profound and positive effect on me. So I created this tribute page in gratitude. Of course, there is a real J.R.R. Tolkien home page which has a lot of great stuff for you to explore, and it's where I grabbed an image of J.R.R.
