A Complicated Kindness
Miriam Toews
The tricky thing about hype is, it inflates the expectations of readers. Takes what may be good and creates desires for greatness. Not only that it sometimes draws in readers for whom the book was never intended.
Luckily, I was exactly the person for whom Toews was writing. I got the humour. I enjoyed the daisy-chain of thoughts that the protagonist expressed. I could relate to teenaged Nomi, whose family imploded, not on the mean streets of some inner city but on the quiet lanes of a Mennonite town.
And when it comes to "coming of age" novels, that's relatively rare for me. I have yet to be able to finish Catcher in the Rye . I only made my way through Vernon God Little because I was trapped on an 8-hour train.
Nomi is a girl experiencing the world as many religiously-raised girls do. Perhaps I have too have felt that disconnect between what those around me believe and my own gut feelings about the way the universe works. Perhaps she resonated more with me than Holden or Vernon because she is a she.

      Summer of My Amazing Luck
      By: Miriam Toews
Random House of Canada; http://www.randomhouse.ca/ Lucy, a young mother, moves in to "Half-a-Life", a government subsidized housing complex in Winnipeg with her infant son. She slowly becomes familiar with her neighbours, mostly other single mothers "on the dole". She observes their lives and their beliefs, exploring her own feelings as she shares her accounts, her story punctuated with the comic irony she sees in their situations, and more and more, in her own situation. Lucy wonders what it feels like to be in a relationship and looks at love with a mix of cynicism and hopeful idealism. She's just going along for the ride, not really knowing what she wants in life and waiting for something to happen, hoping for something to happen, until she makes a mistake that changes her outlook on everything. Read this if you: Appreciate clever humour and find life's ironies funny.

A Complicated Kindness , the latest winner of a £7000 Canadian literary award named after the Queen’s representative to that quaint constitutional monarchy, appears to tell a simple story. Nomi Nickel, the novel’s sixteen-year-old protagonist and first-person narrator, straightforwardly relates a particularly intense period of conflict in, rebellion against and sudden departure from her kind but conflicted family. Set in the fictional town of East Village in the Canadian province of Manitoba in the 1970s, the lives of the Nickels and most of the local population are dominated by the local (ostensibly Mennonite) church, in which many people participate but to which few seem to belong. The church is dominated by Nomi’s uncle, whom she calls Uncle Hands or the Mouth (of Darkness), who believes in imposing strict rules regulating the behaviour of the local population. in medias res , as it were, with Nomi alone and yet hopeful.

Left alone with her sad, peculiar father, she spends her days piecing together why her mother and sister left.
Annotation:
Nomi's mother and sister have moved far away from the family's oppressive Mennonite community in the far reaches of rural Canada, and teenaged Nomi is left with her father. Neither of them is doing well. Ray becomes withdrawn and depressed and disappears for long stretches; Nomi loses herself in smoking pot and acting out her fleeting rebellions as she ponders her mother's defection and contemplates her grim future, which is, she senses, not going to be lived in New York City's East Village, scene of her best fantasies....

This item is in stock and usually ships within 24 hours. From the acclaimed Giller Prize Finalist and Governor General’s Award Winner: a delightfully funny and charming second novel about Canada’s smallest town. Life in Winnipeg didn’t go as planned for Knute and her daughter. But living back in Algren with her parents and working for the longtime mayor, Hosea Funk, has its own challenges: Knute finds herself mixed up with Hosea’s attempts to achieve his dream of meeting the Prime Minister — even if that means keeping the town’s population at an even 1500. Bringing to life small-town Canada and all its larger-than-life characters, A Boy of Good Breeding is a big-hearted, hilarious novel about finding out where you belong. Winner of the 1998 McNally Robinson Book of the Year Award.

A Complicated Kind of Author
Interview by Di Brandt Herizons: Miriam Toews: Not really a theory, no. But the combination of those things has always been, in my mind, the essence of life, a very natural thing. I grew up with a father who suffered intensely from depression and was often fearful, justifiably, I think, of much in life and the world. But I also grew up with a mother who absolutely embraces life, is afraid of nothing, and loves to laugh. So that might have something to do with it. One of the most often-told stories in Canadian literature is the story of a gifted young person who feels stifled by his or her small rural community and lights out for the freedom and opportunities offered by the city. Your story gives it a really unusual and unexpected twist: By the end, others have left the small town, but the young narrator is still there, holding the fort, so to speak. Can you comment on the surprise ending?

Official UK website Official website (in German) Synopsis Carlos Reygadas’s latest film SILENT LIGHT is a mesmerising and deeply moving tale of love and betrayal played out against the pastoral backdrop of the North Mexican Mennonite community. The story centres around Johan (Cornelio Wall Fehr), a married man who against the laws of his faith and traditional beliefs, falls in love with another woman, thus facing the dilemma of whether to betray his wife and disrupt the apparent stability of the community or sacrifice his true love and future happiness. Sublimely shot, entirely on location in the Mexican Mennonite community near Chihuahua, SILENT LIGHT opens with what is arguably the single most remarkable shot of the year; dawn breaking over the rural landscape.

A Complicated Kindness

reviewed by Paul M. Jessup

A Complicated Kindness
is a haunted novel rich with the longing for a life more ordinary. With this book Miriam Toews drills into the core of any religious fundamentalist community: the worship of death and the longing for the living.
This is a story that takes place in a small Mennonite village and focuses on the narrator Nomi whose mother and older sister are missing. Their lack of physical presence paints the novel, which is written like a stream of interwoven unconnected memories. This gives the book a dream like feeling, an impression of what real memories feel like. Do not expect a traditional, linear story rife with plot. Expect a story told in the way actual memories occur, unconnected and unraveling.
In any other writer's hands this could be a failing for the novel. But with Toews's stark and lucid prose the reader is kept glued to the page as the characters reveal themselves through Nomi's memories. The dreamy aspect of the novel is enhanced by the lack of quotation marks around dialogue. This gives the book a Faulknerian objectivity that makes you feel distanced and yet actually there at the same time.
