To the list of unlikely places where the gods of stardom have discovered their angels - the soda fountain at Schwab's Drugs (Lana Turner), a New York pizza parlour (Natalie Portman) - it seems we must now add the back-flap book photo. For that's where the Mexican director Carlos Reygadas stumbled upon the bestselling Canadian author Miriam Toews, seeing in her visage staring out from a copy of A Complicated Kindness something mournful and broken and perfect for his new film. Miriam Toews' A Complicated Kindness is a fine novel which tells the story of Nomi, a teenaged girl growing up in a repressive religious community in rural Manitoba. This wonderful paragraph nicely encapsulates what the increasingly free-thinking Nomi is up against. When we were little, Tash and I would sit in the darkened dining room of my grandmother's farmhouse, listening to the funeral announcements. They came on after supper, on the local radio station we were allowed to listen to because the elders knew that it was better for little children to listen to the names of dead people being read out in a terrifying monotone than the Beatles singing all we need is love. Afterwards my grandma would tell us: They have gone home at last. Praise the Lord. Then we would play this game called Knipsbrat with each other until our middle fingers were sore. It was one of the few games we were allowed to play. Golf was another one because it consisted of using a rod to hit something much, much smaller than yourself and a lot of men in this town enjoyed that sort of thing. My thanks to Counterpoint Books for the review copy.

Toews, Miriam. A Complicated Kindness It took me a long time to pick up this book, mostly because of all the hype around it. Everyone loved it, it received rave reviews, and book clubs around the world (okay - just a few that I'd heard of) were reading it. Normally, this puts me right off reading a book, but I caved to the pressure and read it. The plot revolves around a young Mennonite girl in Manitoba. They're not a strict, old-school Mennonite community - they have electricity and indoor plumbing, but there are certain things they are forbidden to do. And the spiritual leader has the power to excommunicate members of the community, thereby condemning them to be pariahs if they remain. At the beginning of the story, Nomi's mother and sister have both been excommunicated by her uncle, and her father seems to be stuck in some sort of neglectful cycle. Nomi rebels in little ways - nothing that gets her kicked out of the church, but in ways that earn the close scrutiny of the community. She spends a great deal of time reflecting on her mother and sister, and wondering where they are now. (Not that we ever find out what happened to them, or find out why her mother and uncle had such a strained relationship. There were hints, and a possible revelation, but nothing more.)

The Complications of Miriam Toews
Swing High: Her Life Fancy degrees and literary qualifications aside, Miriam Toews can write. Exceptionally well in fact. Born in Steinbach, a small town Mennonite community in Manitoba, in 1964, Toews left her rural upbringing and set sail for Europe, only to settle temporarily in London and Montreal. After curbing her wanderlust she returned to the Canadian Prairies to obtain a degree in film studies at the University of Manitoba. During the late 80s her feet grew itchy on again, so she packed up her kids and partner and headed east where she obtained a secondary degree in Journalism from the University of Kingâs College in Halifax. With two credentials in hand and her youngest daughter beginning nursery school, Toews was freelancing for CBC creating radio documentaries and figured why not try her established good fortune and write a novel. The result of this whimsical thought was her 1996 fictional debut The Summer of My Amazing Luck . Not one to be satisfied by a single accomplishment, Toews published her sophomore novel

BOOK REVIEW: A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews
I loved Miriam Toews's earlier novel, A Boy of Good Breeding , so I was excited to pick up A Complicated Kindness, which I'd heard a lot of great things about, although I had no idea of the storyline. It's set in a Mennonite community in Canada in (I think) the early '80s (dates are deliberately sketchy). Mennonites are a religious sect of the 'are they a cult or aren't they?' variety and as Toews was brought up Mennonite I can only assume she is drawing heavily on her own experience with this story of a disillusioned sixteen-year old girl, fed up of her isolated life in a dead-end town in which all forms of fun and self-expression are heavily frowned-upon. To add to main character Nomi's sense of alienation, her mother and sister ("the better looking half of our family") are missing, her best friend is bed-bound in hospital and she feels disconnected from her boyfriend. Plus she's failing in school and her only prospect for a future career seems to be snapping necks at the local chicken factory...
By Julie Wheelwright Wednesday, 26 July 2006 Maybe because Miriam Toews's second novel is set in a small town in the Canadian prairie province of Manitoba (home to the late Carol Shields for many decades), the strap-line is "a big-hearted story". Don't be put off. A Boy of Good Breeding is seriously funny, rather brilliantly structured and full of characters who speak the same laconic language as Garrison Keillor's in Lake Wobegon. To complicate matters, Hosea's mother Euphemia confesses on her deathbed that her son's real father is the Prime Minister. But can you rely on the testimony of a mother who raised her son on the story that he was handed to her by a cowboy one moonlit summer night? As 1 July looms, Hosea takes to stalking patients at the local hospital, and keeps a secret list of births, deaths and possible additions to the town's population.
32. Swing Low: A Life By Miriam Toews Swing Low A Life book cover, description, where to purchase, release history. http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/t/miriam-toews/swing-low.htm
byMiriam Toews One morning Mel Toews put on his coat and hat and walked out of town, prepared to die. A loving husband and father, faithful member of the Mennonite church, and immensely popular schoolteacher, he was a pillar of his close-knit community. Yet after a lifetime of struggle, he could no longer face the darkness of manic depression. With razor-sharp precision, Swing Low tells his story in his own voice, taking us deep inside the experience of despair. But it is also a funny, winsome evocation of country life: growing up on farm, courting a wife, becoming a teacher, and rearing a happy, strong family in the midst of private torment. A humane, inspiring story of a remarkable man, father, and teacher. Similar Books by other authors...

A witty, beleaguered teenager whose family is shattered by fundamentalist Christianity balances grief and hope in this coming-of-age novel.
