Nomi Nickel's family is falling apart. First, big sister Tash fled their Mennonite village. Soon after, Mom followed. "Half of our family, the better-looking half, is missing," Nomi tells us at the outset. "If we could get out of this town things might be better but we can't because we're waiting for Trudie and Tash to come back." Nomi's narration is a genuine wonder. Guide Rating - Nomi Nickel is the narrator of Miriam Toews' new novel A Complicated Kindness . Her mother and her sister have both left the family, separately and without warning at the start of Toews' account of the life of an angsty 16 year old girl growing up in a Mennonite community. Why her mother and her sister have left becomes more clear as the novel goes on, and the lifestyle of the Mennonite community is described and decried in a way that only a rebellious teenager could.
A Complicated Kindness is good and bad, to put it simply. It is tempting to draw several comparisons, most notably to the perennial teen-angst book Catcher in the Rye , to which Ms. Toews owes much. Like Holden Caulfield, Nomi Nickel is aghast at a world she struggles to describe and explain. Indeed, the Mennonite community comes across as an oppressive one with rules calculated to instill guilt and fear in the residents. This includes excommunication from the town for continued offenses. Like Holden, Nomi is a quirky narrator. Often laugh-out-loud funny and thoroughly unreliable, her take on her world seems destined for tragedy.

A Complicated Kindness by Miriam Toews Published by Knopf Canada 246 pages, 2004 Buy it online Following Menno Home Reviewed by Linda L. Richards Coming of age stories are powerful fodder for novelists. So powerful, in fact, that one grows weary of seeing them. And it was only after battling this weariness (" Another one of those...") that I started reading A Complicated Kindness. It was a battle worth fighting. A Complicated Kindness reminds the reader why the coming of age story is so often trotted out. In the hands of an author more concerned with the telling of her tale than the smell of her own catharsis, this oeuvre can really hum. Miriam Toews has impressed critics and readers with every one of her outings. Two previous novels Summer of My Amazing Luck and A Boy of Good Breeding as well as a single work of book-length non-fiction Swing Low: A Life were all greeted with raves and showered with awards. Collectively Toews' works have won the John Hirsch award, the McNally Robinson Book of the Year award and the Alexander Kennedy Ibister award for non-fiction. Not hugely visible awards, not blazingly well-known critics, but notice, nonetheless. Almost all of it positive. All of Toews' books have been good and worthy of note. But

    Miriam Toews and Luck
For a summer read i grabbed Toews lesser known but also excellent novel "Summer of My Amazing Luck." I really enjoyed it. Mostly, because i really connected with Toews wry sense of humor and her ability to find the ironic in daily living.
Toews is an interesting writer. Probably representative of lots of writers who try to make sense out of the world they were taught to believe in and the world they now experience. It is interesting that as kids we are often taught by parents, siblings and others how life "works." But then we have moments in our adult life where our preconceived interpretations of reality are thrown for a loop.
These loops generally lead to a nauseous and sickly experience. This disonance between what has been inherited through tradition and family and the truth of present experience provides interesting questions. I like it when writers like Toews have the courage to work through this process through fictional literature.
Through this kind of writing i think that the writer allows the reader to explore their own experiences too. For example we can explore why the world was presented to us the way it was when we were children. Was it that people outright lied to us when we were kids (for dishonest or malicious reasons)? Was the world presented to us in a certain way to protect us from a painful reality? Or is there a different kind of perception of "the way things are" for kids and adults? Maybe someone (Mom or Dad, a loved uncle or a crazy grandparent) tried to be honest with us but we just did not have the emotional or mental capacity to understand what they were trying to communicate?

Fumbling Towards Empathy On my first day of work at Indian Echo Caverns in the Pennsylvania countryside, I was trained by a Mennonite tour guide in a tight bun and Easy Spirits. She was my age, 17, but I guessed she was much older. Is she allowed to work here ? I thought, then scolded myself for it. When I got to know her, she acted like any one of us, with fewer swear words and comfortable shoes. I had heard stories about Mennonite kids selling crack, and at once I began to believe it. They were as angst-ridden as the rest of us, which earned them respect in my narcissistic adolescent brain. I tried to read Miriam Toews' heartfelt A Complicated Kindness with that teenage epiphany in mind. Nomi Nickel is a Mennonite girl growing up in a small god-fearing Canadian community called East Village. Ironically, Nomi's dream is to live in New York's East Village, the antithesis of her closed world. She grapples with a dysfunctional family, sex, drugs, and school; all against the backdrop of the unforgiving religious community she cannot escape. We are introduced to Nomi's extraordinary life through ordinary means casual descriptions of daily and family life that reverberate powerfully thanks to Toews' perfectly calibrated tone. Set against the frigid Canadian countryside, the town seems chillier thanks to descriptions of the local business a chicken farm where the slaughtered birds hang like a nightmare over the young people destined to inherit a job at the chopping block.

A Complicated Kindness Sunday 5 June 2005 Summary Canadian writer Miriam Toews grew up in a small prairie town that was settled by the Mennonites, a Christian sect known for their anti-modern ways. Program Transcript Rachael Kohn: It’s normal to be a rebel when you’re young, but if you’ve grown up in a Christian sect, like the Mennonites in Canada, who are almost as strict as the Amish, even dancing can land you in trouble in the eyes of the church. Hello, I’m Rachael Kohn. Today’s Spirit of Things on ABC Radio National comes to you from the Sydney Writers’ Festival, where I met the award-winning Canadian author, Miriam Toews. She’s a Mennonite and a rebel, and she’s turned her youthful experience into a funny and poignant story called A Complicated Kindness , which has been compared to J.D. Salinger’s Catcher in the Rye APPLAUSE Miriam Toews: Thanks a lot.
