About United Way Fast Facts Financials Board of Directors ... Directory of Commununity Services WORKPLACE CAMPAIGNS Noted historian and French Aristocrat Alexis de Tocqueville toured the young United States in 1831, observing and recording the American spirit of voluntary action for the common good, which formed the basis for his book, Democracy in America. Today, this essence of volunteerism remains alive through United Way and the society that bears his name. The Alexis de Tocqueville Society was created to acknowledge and honor those individuals whose leadership and commitment to helping others has been uncommon in its generosity. On behalf of the thousands of lives who are touched each year by one of our member agencies, the United Way of Central Oklahoma is proud to thank and salute these visionary leaders for their outstanding annual support. Three elements of democracy, which de Tocqueville so admired in American society, were liberty, equality and the spirit of neighbor helping neighbor. These same elements are embraced in the French

On Monday, 24 May 2004 I found the following note in my inbox: Justin Orndorff : > Attached is an upcoming book to be put out by the > Alexis de Tocqueville Institution (www.adti.net). If > you're receiving this mail then we've probably been in > touch before now, regarding our research. > > Questions / comments / concerns should be directed to > Ken Brown - kenbrown@adti.net > > Have a great weekend, > Justin Orndorff Attached to it was a 92-page PDF that described itself as excerpts from Samizdat: And Other Issues Regarding the `Source' of Open Source Code This had to be the tome promised to us in a press release ten days previously, titled Torvalds claim to "invent" Linux probably false, says new study . ADTI's claims had already been addressed with withering sarcasm by Linus Torvalds and blasted by Andy Tanenbaum, the man from whom ADTI alleges that Linus stole Linux. I found the fact that it had been sent to me rather curious, for I have no recollection of ever having had dealings with ADTI. Nor did anything in my back mail suggest that I had ever been queried by them. But I give a lot of interviews, and it is at least possible I might have forgotten one. The following, marked up for HTML and with a few typos fixed, is the response I sent back less than an hour later. A few further notes follow it.

A Nobleman Fascinated by Democracy Opposed to the government of King Louis Philippe, and eager to travel outside of France, Alexis de Tocqueville and Gustave de Beaumont went to America in 1831 to assess the new country's prison system. Though the majority of their time was spent in Boston, New York and Philadelphia, they also ventured as far south as New Orleans and as far west as Michigan. As well as meeting with many ordinary Americans, Tocqueville gained additional insight by interviewing presidents Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams, as well as Charles Carroll (the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence). Upon returning to France in March 1832, Beaumont began writing The United States Penitentiary System and its Application in France, with Tocqueville supplying facts and ideas. Their report inspired prison reform throughout Europe, but Tocqueville remains best known for his solo work, Democracy in America, which he finished on August 14, 1834. The success of the first edition of 500 copies led to a second printing in January of 1835, and later that year, Tocqueville received the Montyon prize from the French Academy for his book.

Site search Foreigners often had some interesting things to say about American manners that help put the words of the etiquette books into perspective. Here are a few of them, followed by a rebuttal from the redoubtable "Dame Shirley". "...in democracies, no such thing as a regular code of good breeding can be laid down...In aristocracies, the rules of propriety impose the same demeanor on everyone; they make all the members of the same class appear alike...Amongst a democratic people, manners are neither so tutored nor so uniform, but they are frequently more sincere...Thus it may be said, in one sense, that the effect of democracy is not exactly to give men any particular manners, but to prevent them from having any manners at all" Alexis deTocqueville.
