Compassion
I n democratic ages men rarely sacrifice themselves for another, but they show a general compassion for all the human race. One never sees them inflict pointless suffering, and they are glad to relieve the sorrows of others when they can do so without much trouble to themselves. They are not disinterested, but they are gentle.
Faith
D espotism may govern without faith, but liberty cannot. How is it possible that society should escape destruction if the moral tie is not strengthened in proportion as the political tie is relaxed? And what can be done with a people who are their own masters if they are not submissive to the Deity?
Inequality
H owever energetically society in general may strive to make all the citizens equal and alike, the personal pride of each individual will always make him try to escape from the common level, and he will form some inequality somewhere to his own profit.
Opportunity
B orn often under another sky, placed in the middle of an always moving scene, himself driven by the irresistible torrent which draws all about him, the American has no time to tie himself to anything, he grows accustomed only to change, and ends by regarding it as the natural state of man. He feels the need of it, more he loves it; for the instability; instead of meaning disaster to him, seems to give birth only to miracles all about him.

Alexis de Tocqueville, Visionary of Modernity
(With excerpts from his Democracy in America
by Patrice Guinard
translation Matyas Becvarov
After returning from his visit to the United States (1831-1832), Tocqueville began to write his . Understanding that the political system and societal conditions that obtained across the Atlantic would become established as the general rule in most other countries, beginning with the Old World, and that the propagation of the American democratic model was inevitable, Tocqueville tried to formulate its characteristics and imagine its evolution. Tocqueville foresaw the rise of an egalitarian society based on individualism, unsettledness and isolation, which paradoxically would become more pronounced even as individuals came to resemble each other more and more: "I see an innumerable crowd of similar and equal men who compete among themselves to procure small and vulgar pleasures." ( , II 4.6) He foresaw as well the rise of a new kind of repression, neither despotism nor tyranny, but rather a "kind of servitude, ordered, mild and peaceable (...), a singular power, tutelary, all-encompassing, [acting through] a system of complicated minor rules, miniscule and uniform, which do not break the spirit but soften it, bend and direct it; it rarely forces action, but continually sets up resistance to action; it does not destroy, but prevents birth; it does not tyrannize, but inhibits, compromises, ennervates, subdues, stupefies, and ends by reducing each nation to being nothing more than a herd of timid, industrious animals of whom the government is the shepherd." With Alexis de Tocqueville in Green Bay by Jerrold Rodesch (Reprinted with Permission from Voyageur, Historical review of Brown County and Northeast Wisconsin , Summer 1986.) Democracy in America, his master work, was based on extensive travels in this country in 1831-32, including a visit to Green Bay, Wisconsin. It was also based on his subtle theories about "a democratic state of society," toward which he saw historical development moving and of which he found the United States the most fully realized instance. This country was at once a cautionary example and the most important field of research for those who wished to know the outlines of the future. Tocqueville analyzed the American legal and political systems and the social and cultural life of a democratic people. By democracy he meant a condition of political and social equality, in contrast to the still hierarchical system of privileged orders of traditional Europe. Democracy in America combines detailed accounts of America in the 1830s with elaborate sociological generalizations. It also predicts the direction of development for American institutions and attitudes. A century and a half later the American journalist Richard Reeves re-traced Tocqueville's travels and re-posed Tocqueville's questions about American democracy, publishing the story of his tour of the country and his answers in American Journey: Traveling with Tocqueville in Search of Democracy in America (Simon and Schuster, New York, 1982).
