(Full name James Grover Thurber) American humorist, playwright, essayist, and short story writer. For further information on Thurber's short fiction, see SSC, Volume 1.
    INTRODUCTION
One of the most popular and respected humorists of the twentieth century, Thurber was often called the Mark Twain of his era. Among his admirers were Ernest Hemingway and T. S. Eliot. Along with E. B. White, Robert Benchley, and other writers under the tutelage of New Yorker editor Harold Ross, Thurber set the standard for sophisticated humor and prose style for a generation of American readers and writers. His stories, essays, and drawings combine the mundane and the absurd to create characters and situations at once strange and familiar that continue to fascinate and amuse his audience.
    Biographical Information
Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio, in 1894. When he was seven, Thurber was blinded in his left eye by an arrow while playing with his brother William. This accident led to lifelong trouble with his eyesight and resulted in total blindness for the ten years prior to his death. Thurber attended Ohio State University and worked in undergraduate journalism while a student there, eventually becoming editor of the

Having sung the praises of Albert Schweitzer yesterday, it might well be expected that I would choose more heroes along the lines of the secular saints, maybe Gandhi or King or the like. I decided to talk about people with whom I have something in common. With Hilbert, we have math in common. With Schweitzer, we both play the keyboard. With James Thurber, we both make an effort to write something funny. The thing that makes them heroes to me is that they do the thing I do much better than I do it, and they have other talents I don't possess.
I discovered James Thurber's writings and cartoons when I was a kid, and I love them to this day. His most famous works were first published in The New Yorker , a magazine known for its sophistication. Like many New Yorkers, Thurber was a transplant. He was born in Ohio, and many of his best stories are about his childhood. He did not see himself as particularly sophisticated, as his essay The Secret Life of James Thurber shows, comparing his own dreams and fantasies with those of Salvador Dali.

The Little Girl and the Wolf
by James Thurber One afternoon a big wolf waited in a dark forest for a little girl to come along carrying a basket of food to her grandmother. Finally a little girl did come along and she was carrying a basket of food. "Are you carrying that basket to your grandmother?" asked the wolf. The little girl said yes, she was. So the wolf asked her where her grandmother lived and the little girl told him and he disappeared into the wood. When the little girl opened the door of her grandmother's house she saw that there was somebody in bed with a nightcap and nightgown on. She had approached no nearer than twenty-five feet from the bed when she saw that it was not her grandmother but the wolf, for even in a nightcap a wolf does not look any more like your grandmother than the Metro-Goldwyn lion looks like Calvin Coolidge. So the little girl took an automatic out of her basket and shot the wolf dead. (Moral: It is not so easy to fool little girls nowadays as it used to be.)

University of Iowa News Release Oct. 22, 2007 UI Press republishes James Thurber's graphic parable 'The Last Flower' The University of Iowa Press is republishing James Thurber's graphic novel "The Last Flower" on Nov. 1. Originally published in 1939, just after the beginning of World War II, "The Last Flower" was Thurber's "melancholy argument against annihilation." This new printing features fresh scans of Thurber's original drawings. Thurber's parable in pictures a graphic novel ahead of its day about the eternal cycles of war, peace and love was described in the New York Times as "at once one of the most serious and one of the most hilarious contributions on war." Civilization has collapsed after World War XII, dogs have deserted their masters, all the groves and gardens have been destroyed and love has vanished from the earth. Then one day, "a young girl who had never seen a flower chanced to come upon the last one in the world." Thurber dedicated the book to his only child "in the wistful hope that her world will be better than mine." David Rees, author of "Get Your War On," said, "'The Last Flower' is on the short list of books worth clutching to your chest as the world is destroyed."

    James Thurber
    (1894 - 1961, USA)
This towering figure in American comedy, James Thurber, is responsible for moving comic writing from the baroque rhythms and dialect humor that dominated the previous century into everyday conversation. His comic persona of the put-upon everyman struggling to deal with a strange and often hard world has become a cornerstone of written and spoken American comedy. Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio. His best-known characters are perhaps Walter Mitty, his snarling wife, and silently observing animals. In the early 1920s, he worked as a journalist for several newspapers. Thurber also lived in Paris, writing for the Chicago Tribune while trying to further his writing career. See thousands of comic artists in the Lambiek Comiclopedia
