Thurber worked hard in the 1920s, both in the U.S. and in France, to establish himself as a professional writer. However, unique among major American literary figures, he became equally well known for his simple, surrealistic drawings and cartoons. Both his skills were helped along by the support of, and collaboration with, fellow New Yorker staff member E. B. White . White insisted that Thurber's sketches could stand on their own as artistic expressions — and Thurber would go on to draw six covers and numerous classic illustrations for the New Yorker.

James (Grover) Thurber (1894-1961) American writer and cartoonist, who dealt with the frustrations of modern world. Thurber's best-known characters are Walter Mitty, his snarling wife, and silently observing animals. His stories have influenced later writers, such as Kurt Vonnegut and Joseph Heller . Thurber is generally acknowledged as the greatest American humorist since Mark Twain (1835-1910). '"What was the matter with that one policeman? mother asked, after they had gone. "Grandfather shot him," I said. "What for?" she demanded. I told her he was a deserter. "Of all things!" said mother. "He was such a nice-looking young man."' (from 'The Night the Ghost Got In', in My Life and Hard Times James Thurber was born in Columbus, Ohio. His father, Charles L. Thurber, was a clerk and minor politician, who went through many periods of unemployment. Mary Thurber, his mother, was a strong-minded woman and a practical joker. Once she surprised her guests by explaining that she was kept in the attic because of her love for the postman. On another occasion she pretended to be a cripple and attended a faith healer's revival, jumping up suddenly and proclaiming herself cured. Thurber described her as "a born comedienne" and "one of the finest comic talents I think I've ever known." Thurber's father, who had dreams of being an actor or lawyer, was said to have been the basis of the typical small, slight man of Thurber's stories. Later Thurber portrayed his family in MY LIFE AND HARD TIMES (1933). "I suppose that the high-water mark of my youth in Columbus, Ohio, was the night the bed fell on my father," Thurber wrote in the book.

JAMES THURBER: HIS LIFE AND TIMES, by Harrison Kinney. Henry Holt , 1238 pages, $40. James Thurber is a survivor. In his prose and his cartoons , he withstands the venomous tongue and emasculating stare of the Thurber Woman. In bookstores today, he holds on while the humor section is overrun by Letterman Seinfeld , and other TV Guide cover models. Thurber's colleagues from the glory days of American humor (unphotogenic types such as Benchley , Parker, and Perelman) are gone, but Thurber and his drawings of meek husbands and sympathetic bloodhounds still occupy a few lonely inches of shelf space. Luckily, he's getting some new attention this month, the 100th anniversary of his birth, with the publication of James Thurber: His Life and Times , a massive biography by Harrison Kinney. Much of Thurber's best work came in the form of a New Yorker invention called the casual a short essay or story written in the tone of a friendly letter, albeit with the full force of that magazine's grammarians and fact-checkers behind it. Thurber and other writers of the late 1920s were part of the shift toward the vernacular in American humor, in contrast to

The 13 Clocks
by James Thurber Illustrator: Marc Simont Publisher: Simon and Schuster ISBN: Format: Trade paperback Pages: James Thurber is best known as a writer and cartoonist for the New Yorker from 1927 until the 1950s. Over that period, he also wrote five children's books. This is one of them, a short illustrated children's fantasy, although illustrated by Marc Simont rather than by Thurber himself. The 13 Clocks has a very traditional plot structure. A beautiful princess is kept captive in a castle by an evil duke. A prince in disguise arrives in town and attracts the ire of the duke, who sets him an impossible challenge to win the hand of the princess. He's aided by the mysterious, magical Golux ("the only Golux in the world, and not a mere Device") to a predictable happy ending. The princess is never more than a goal and plot device, and barely gets any dialogue in the story. This feels stock, but Thurber writes with a playfulness and surrealistic edginess that rises above the plot. The story of the book is pitched young enough to be the sort of book that a parent would read to their child and the child would later read themselves, and it would be great fun to read aloud with silly voices. Thurber's writing is full of word play, puns, and bits of near poetry. The characters frequently make snide comments or contrasting comments after longer speeches or poetic sections; Thurber mixes up the language and gives the story a rhythm that draws the reader along. I also liked that the Golux feels only partly in this world and a bit incompetent because he isn't completely real; that's typical of a slightly twisted outlook that makes the story feel riskier. Thurber is capable of taking matters around odd corners, even if none of those corners step far out of the basic fantasy plot.

The Staying Power of James Thurber

Nobody talks much about James Thurber, anymore. I wonder why that is. When you look back at most of the great short-form literary humorists of the early/mid 20 th century – from S. J. Perelman to Woody Allen – their stuff is almost impossible to read now. I remember laughing out loud when I first read them, but when, on re-reading them today, I can’t remember precisely why. Thurber’s different – his short stories (especially those gathered in 1933’s My Life and Hard Times ) are as funny today as they must have been when he first wrote them. I’m reminded of this over and over as I’ve read the stories out loud (on demand) over and over during the past five years to my son at bedtime. Yes, he’s 13 now, and could be reading them to himself, but, let’s face it, the old man does a bang-up job recreating the voices of Thurber’s bewildered and beleaguered father, his senescent and bellicose grandfather, and the omnipresent harbinger of the apocalypse known as “The Get-Ready Man.”

James Thurber, one of the most famous humorists from the early 20th century, is well-known by literary critics and fans around the country and around the world. Many of them, however, are unaware Thurber is from Columbus. James Grover Thurber was born December 8, 1894 in a small home on Parsons Avenue on Columbus' working-class south side (a home torn down to make way for I-70). James, or Jamie as he was known to his family, was son to Charles Thurber, who worked as a clerk in the office of Ohio Governor Asa Bushnell. Jamie had an older brother William and a younger brother Robert. Their mother was a housewife who had dreamed of being a comic actress but had parents who saw to it she never entered that "improper profession." By all accounts, her love of humor and theater made the Thurber home a fun and exciting place.

Biography:

James Grover Thurber, (USA, 1894-1961) a lanky Ohio-born journalist, came to national attention after his sketches, both graphic and verbal, began appearing in The New Yorker in the 1930's. ("His pictures sell like hot cakes," a Thurber fan remarked, "and look like them, too.") In 1933 the publication of My Life and Hard Times , loosely based on the scenes and characters of his Colombus boyhood, made Thurber the most popular humorist in America: so popular that he was compared to Mark Twain, which annoyed him. (Some of his relatives were not happy with the book, charging that Thurber had made fun of the ancestors whose foibles he had so lovingly and accurately immortalized.) In addition to collections of his humorous pieces, fables, and cartoons (including the sketches of his immortal "Thurber dog") his works include several fairy tales for children and adults, the later ones illustrated by other artists after Thurber's eyesight (he was left half-blind after a childhood accident with a bow and arrow) had gotten too bad to allow him to draw.

James Thurber, one of the outstanding American humorists of the twentieth century, is known for his distinctively funny cartoons and short stories. His concise, witty prose spanned a breadth of genres, including autobiography, fiction, children's fantasy, and modern commentary, and two of his short stories, "The Catbird Seat" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," are among the best-known classics of American literature. Thurber was born in Columbus on December 8, 1894. His father was a clerk who often served politicians, and his mother was an eccentric woman who would be an influence for many of his stories. Thurber had two brothers. As a young boy, Thurber lost sight in one of his eyes while playing "William Tell" with his brothers, an accident which eventually caused him to go completely blind later in life. Still, Thurber had a fairly normal childhood. Thurber attended local public schools. He went to the Ohio State University from 1913-1917, when the Thurbers rented the house at 77 Jefferson Avenue, which is now Thurber House. Due to his eye injury, Thurber never completed a compulsory ROTC course and did not graduate from Ohio State, though he received a posthumous degree.

Garrison Keillor, a sunnier brand of Midwestern humorist, has assembled four longer works with many of Thurber's drawings and short pieces for the Library of America edition of Thurber's selected works. Many of these cartoons and writings are now classics, and Thurber's edgy, modernist humornot to mention his usually bewildered protagonistshas influenced many of the best cartoonists today.
