#08 - LIVING PROOF
"Myths and legends die hard in America. We love them for the extra dimension they provide, the illusion of near-infinite possibility to erase the narrow confines of most men's reality. Weird heroes and mould-breaking champions exist as living proof to those who need it that the tyranny of 'the rat race' is not yet final."
—The Great Shark Hunt, 1979
#04 - FEAR
"We are turning into a nation of whimpering slaves to Fear—fear of war, fear of poverty, fear of random terrorism, fear of getting down-sized or fired because of the plunging economy, fear of getting evicted for bad debts or suddenly getting locked up in a military detention camp on vague charges of being a Terrorist sympathizer."
—"Extreme Behavior in Aspen," February 3, 2003

Hunter S. Thompson
Hunter Stockton Thompson (July 18, 1937- February 20, 2005) was an American journalist and author. He was known for his flamboyant writing style, most notably in his novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , which blurred the distinctions between writer and subject, fiction and nonfiction. He is the creator of gonzo journalism and, as such, is widely imitated A Louisville, Kentucky native, Thompson grew up in the Cherokee Triangle neighborhood of the Highlands and attended Louisville Male High School. His parents, Jack (d. 1952) and Virginia (d. 1999), married in 1935. Jack's death left three sons—Hunter, Davison, and James,to be brought up by their mother, who was a heavy drinker. Thompson's difficult youth, and its influence on his behavior and the development of his misanthropic worldview, awaits serious literary analysis. After early trouble with the law, including an arrest in 1956 for robbery, he enlisted in the Air Force as part of his sentence. At Eglin Air Force Base, Florida, in 1956, he began working as a sports journalist, writing for the base newspaper and moonlighting for various local newspapers on the side, despite regulations. He was discharged in 1958. On the GI Bill Thompson attended the Columbia University's School of General Studies where he took classes on short story writing, while maintaining a beat-inspired lifestyle in New York City.

Hunter S. Thompson Reviews Apple's New Mac
Henry Blodget January 17, 2008 4:56 AM
Annals from the dawn of digital business...
We were shivering in the "unseasonably" frigid wind over dinner at the Online Publishers Association Summit in Naples, FL, last night, when the media-mogul-raconteur at our table began to warm things up. First there was the story about how his first-ever photograph for the AP was modem-ed to HQ via a rotating drum connected to a telephone handset (8 minutes per photo!)only to scoop UPI by 8 hours and become the centerfold for a 1969 "Woodstock" issue of Life.
Then came this gem: In the mid-80s, tired of getting Hunter S. Thompson's column copy late, by snail-mail, the editors of the San Francisco Examiner took the plunge and sent Thompson a new gizmo called a "Mac." The relationship between the fabled journalist and his electronic tool was reportedly troubled from the beginning. It ended shortly thereafter, when Thompson called his editor screaming in frustration, grabbed his shotgun, and blasted the youthful Steve Jobs's creation to smithereens. Then he sent back the pieces.

"Security, by Hunter S. Thompson" - what about it, Bruce? Posted by: davee at February 22, 2005 08:57 AM I think when he shot himself we all lost something.. In the words of Thompson himself: "I would feel real trapped in life if I didn't know I could commit suicide at any time" Another favourite quote of mine is: "I don't like to advocate alchol, drugs, violence and insanity but they've always worked for me!" R.I.P. Hunter S. Thompson, Outlaw Journalist
Hunter S. Thompson took muckraking to an outer edge in the early 1970s, when he was among the first to detect the rancid odor of White House corruption. His screeds against the sitting president were overwrought and tinged with paranoia, but Nixon’s resignation would vindicate his torrid animadversions. As California’s secretary of state, I had to yank the notary public commission of Nixon’s personal lawyer. It seems that he notarized a backdated deed of Nixon’s papers so that the president could qualify for a charitable deduction—illegally. These were unusual times. Thompson’s personal life was not as grounded as his work, but as Dr. Gonzo often observed, via Dr. Johnson: “He who makes a beast of himself gets rid of the pain of being a man.” In the end, it seems, the pain caught up with him out on Owl Farm. Like a Chekhov story, the firearms he favored during a turbulent life figured in the manner of his untimely exit. In recent years, Thompson had penned a column on politics and sports for ESPN’s website.

IN MEMORY OF HUNTER S. THOMPSON:
POSTCARD FROM LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY
postmark 4.15.05 When I stepped off the plane in Aspen, Colorado, in June 1997, I found a 60-year-old Hunter S. Thompson waiting for me in a convertible Cadillac blasting Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky" at full volume. I was terrified; he was giddy. He was playing the song because it was a part of the soundtrack put together for the film version of F ear and Loathing in Las Vegas that was scheduled to hit theaters the following summer, and he could not have been happier. He had gone to the store before picking me up, and the backseat was filled with bags overflowing with Pepsi, Cap'n Crunch, balsamic vinegar, chocolate, and dozens of tubes of red lipstick. There was an oxygen tank, too, and he instructed me to hold the mask to my face and breathe deeply. He told me he "couldn't have the altitude tweaking my work" during that first night as his editorial assistant. With no more of an introduction than that, he lit up a Dunhill, threw his right arm behind my seat, and began driving across the winding mountainside. He slammed on his breaks once to stop and buy seven bags of black cherries from a roadside stand, and then we were off again, speeding straight to his home in Woody Creek.

Interview by Tony Jenkins I am still haunted by the screeching sound of feedback. It was coming from the speakerphone on my computer, and it was coming at the worst possible time. On the other end of the screeching line was famed 'Gonzo' writer, Hunter S. Thompson , and he was not in the mood for faulty equipment.
he told me,
I could feel my balls shrinking, my confidence was fleeting. Shortly after the speakerphone mishap, I realized that my tape recorder was still paused, and for some crazed reason I will never understand, I chose to tell Thompson

The list of questions was quickly discarded, along with my fear. Something about this experience was starting to feel good. I was getting grilled by the guy who influenced me. How fucking cool is that? He sure seemed content on spending this Friday night schooling a youngster in the interview game. He has said that the fun went out of journalism long ago, and when I asked him what new writers can do to put the fun back in it, he questioned me:
