44. Hunter S. Thompson Interview
A transcript of an interview by Sarah Nelson of the Book Report.
http://www.fargonebooks.com/hunter.html
Transcript of Hunter S. Thompson Interview Courtesy of The Book Report We were a little tense at The Book Report the other day. Would Hunter S. Thompson, famed author of FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and the new bestseller THE PROUD HIGHWAY really show up for his live interview? He is, after all, an unrepentant Dunhill-smoking, Patron-swilling, walking chemical laboratory whose closest friends concede can be just a tad unreliable. But Hunter said he'd come, and so he did. We agreed to let him keep his TV tuned to his beloved basketball playoffs and he delivered what he promised: some characteristically smart and funny thoughts on his new book, his writing career - and, of course, his gonzo reputation. Our interviewer was TBR Executive Editor Sara Nelson (bookpgSara), aided by producer Sean Doorly (Sdoorly). Our unflappable host was Marlene T.
Marlene T: Hello, Sara and Mr. Thompson. Good evening! Hunter Thompson: Good evening Hunter Thompson: Sorry, I'm betting on the basketball game right now. Wait a minute. I hope Utah wins, but I think Chicago will. Bookpgsara: In your new collection of letters, The PROUD HIGHWAY, edited by Douglas Brinkley, you said that you threw out 12 letters for every one that was published. When did you start saving your letters and why?

'He was a crook'
Jun 16, 1994 MEMO FROM THE NATIONAL AFFAIRS DESK DATE: MAY 1, 1994 FROM: DR. HUNTER S. THOMPSON SUBJECT: THE DEATH OF RICHARD NIXON: NOTES ON THE PASSING OF AN AMERICAN MONSTER....HE WAS A LIAR ND A QUITTER, AND HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN BURIED AT SEA. ...BUT HE WAS, AFTER ALL, THE PRESIDENT. "And he cried mightily with a strong voice, saying Babylon the great is fallen, is fallen, and is becoming the habitation of devils, and the hold of every foul spirit and a cage of
every unclean and hateful bird."REVELATION 18:2 Richard Nixon is gone now and I am poorer for it. He was the real thinga political monster straight out of Grendel and a very dangerous enemy. He could shake your hand and stab you in the back at the same time. He lied to his friends and betrayed the trust of his family. Not even Gerald Ford, the unhappy ex-president who pardoned Nixon and kept him out of prison, was immune to the evil fallout. Ford, who believes strongly in Heaven and Hell, has told more than one of his celebrity golf partners that I know Iwill go to hell, because I pardoned Richard Nixon." I have had my own bloody relationship with Nixon for many years, but I am not worried about it landing me in hell with him. I have already been there with that bastard, andI am a better person for it. Nixon had the unique ability to make his enemies seem honorable, and we developed a keen sense of fraternity. Some of my best friends have hatedNixon all their lives. My mother hates Nixon, my son hates Nixon, I hate Nixon, and this hatred has brought us together.

Maureen Farrell at BuzzFlash.com June 16, 2004 MAUREEN FARRELL ARCHIVES Hunter S. Thompson, George W. Bush and the Free Republic by Maureen Farrell Last month, after the Drudge Report linked to a recent Hunter S. Thompson article (" Let's Go to the Olympics ," May 18, 2004) an editor at ESPN asked that an inflammatory statement be removed. "Not even the foulest atrocities of Adolf Hitler ever shocked me so badly as these [Abu Ghraib] photographs did," Thompson’s sentence read, before eventually being scrubbed. Though Thompson was merely stating opinion, ESPN recognized the controversy behind the quip and changed it. "Hunter can go too far sometimes," the editor reportedly said. Drudge’s observations were nevertheless posted on the Free Republic Web site , and, as usual, the hall monitors from hell took aim. "They can second guess their outrageous comments all they like...we still catalog and record them," one poster wrote of ESPN’s intervention. "Hunter can join his friend Garry [sic] ‘Mr. Jane Pauley’ Trudeau on the sh*t list," another warned. And of course, there was the ever-original: "THEN LEAVE AND STAY OUT!" Thompson’s observation was, admittedly, over the top. After all, George Bush is not exactly advocating any "final solutions" just yet. Even so, in light of all the rhetoric about freedom, liberation and democracy, memos leaked to the

Hunter S. Thompson Dies at 67
'Fear and Loathing' Writer Apparently Committed Suicide
By Martin Weil and Allan Lengel Washington Post Staff Writers
Monday, February 21, 2005; Page A04 Hunter S. Thompson, whose life and writing, vivid and quirky reflections of each other, made him one of the principal symbols of the American counterculture, shot and killed himself yesterday at his home near Aspen. Thompson, 67, was celebrated as a practitioner of an outraged form of personal journalism, offering off-beat ideas and observations in a style that was wildly and vividly his own and that brought him cult-like status and widespread recognition.

We were shivering in the "unseasonably" frigid wind over dinner at the Online Publishers Association Summit in Naples, FL, last night, when the media-mogul-raconteur at our table began to warm things up. First there was the story about how his first-ever photograph for the AP was modem-ed to HQ via a rotating drum connected to a telephone handset (8 minutes per photo!)only to scoop UPI by 8 hours and become the centerfold for a 1969 "Woodstock" issue of Life. Then came this gem: In the mid-80s, tired of getting Hunter S. Inventing Shotgun golf was the last project of brilliant Gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson. Sunday night he used a gun to end his own life Doc Searls writes
It may take awhile for the distractions to evaporate, and for the good doctor's constructive contributions to achieve the recognition they deserve. So here's a head start: He opened journalism to the rest of us: I have a theory that the truth is ever told during the nine-to-five hours. If I'd written all the truth I knew for the past ten years, about 600 people - including me - would be rotting in prison cells from Rio to Seattle today. Absolute truth is a very rare and dangerous commodity in the context of professional journalism.
