Hunter S. Thompson - 1937 Lexington By Merideth Mendenhall I. Biography Hunter S. Thompson, creator of Gonzo Journalism, not only is known for his writing, but also for his persona. Who else would have discrepancies about his birth date? All sources agree that he was born on July 18, however some say 1937 and others say 1939, still more cite both. A man born twice? Obviously not, so which is it – only Thompson knows. In When the Going Gets Weird , Peter O. Whitmer reports Thompson's birth in 1937 (27). He continues, that "in 1946[…] Hunter was nine"(32), which also places Thompson's birth in 1937. Yet, William McKeen states that Thompson was born in 1939 in Hunter S. Thompson (2). Still another publication has "1937- " under Thompson's name as part of the heading, and later begins: "born July 18, 1939" ( Contemporary ). There is even an entire web page dedicated to the question of what year Thompson was born (http://www.gonzo.org/hst/ht/date.html). His career continued to include work as the Caribbean correspondent for Time in 1959 and for the New York Herald Tribune from 1959 until 1960 ( Contemporary ). Then, in 1961 he became the South American correspondent for the

Security
by Hunter S. Thompson (1955). Security ... what does this word mean in relation to life as we know it today? For the most part, it means safety and freedom from worry. It is said to be the end that all men strive for; but is security a utopian goal or is it another word for rut? As an afterthought, it seems hardly proper to write of life without once mentioning happiness; so we shall let the reader answer this question for himself: who is the happier man, he who has braved the storm of life and lived or he who has stayed securely on shore and merely existed? By JOE KLEIN Published: November 18, 2007 On July 2, 1974, I started work as deputy Washington bureau chief for Rolling Stone magazine. My unlikely boss was Richard Goodwin, the former Kennedy speechwriter, who invited me to join him in temporary residence at Ethel Kennedy ’s home in McLean, Va. (the owner was in Hyannis for the summer). On July 3, Hunter Thompson joined us. Much of what ensued that holiday weekend is lost in the mists of history and a fog of controlled substances. There were extensive conversations about the viability of renting a truck, filling it with rats and dumping them on the White House lawn. There was also an effort to remove all the Andy Williams songs from the Kennedy jukebox and replace them with Otis Redding. But mostly I remember having a marathon conversation with Hunter about books and writers, settling finally on Joseph Conrad’s exhortation in “Lord Jim”: “In the destructive element immerse!” Skip to next paragraph

DENVER - Hunter S. Thompson, the hard-living writer who inserted himself into his accounts of America’s underbelly and popularized a first-person form of journalism in books such as “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” has committed suicide. Thompson was found dead Sunday in his Aspen-area home of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, sheriff’s officials said. He was 67. Thompson’s wife, Anita, had gone out before the shooting and was not home at the time. His son, Juan, found the body. Thompson “took his life with a gunshot to the head,” the wife and son said in a statement released to the Aspen Daily News. The statement asked for privacy for Thompson’s family and, using the Latin term for Earth, added, “He stomped terra.”

This oral biography of Hunter S. Thompson, written by Jann Wenner and Corey Seymour, consists of anecdotes culled from interviews with 120 of Thompson's acquaintances, beginning with his childhood in Kentucky and ending with his death in 2005 in Woody Creek, Colorado. Some people most notably Thompson's second wife have complained that this oral biography paints an ugly picture of Thompson. I'm not in a position to say whether or not the material was skewed to present a misleading image of Thompson. I think Thompson was a tremendously talented writer (my favorite book of his is Hell's Angels , which was published in 1966) who lived a far out life, and what I learned from reading this book doesn't seem to be out of line with what I imagined he might be like as a person. He was fiercely loyal to his friends but could be also be abusive and cruel. His first wife, Sandy, was interviewed extensively for the book, and her description of Thompson as an exceedingly charismatic man who could be lovable and funny one moment and brutally inconsiderate the next seems to echo the opinions of most of the other people who offered their stories in the book. It's interesting to note, however, that most of the people who were friends with Thompson remained friends with him for life. Despite his flaws, his generosity and love made up for his frequent bouts of bad behavior. Here's an example of Thompson's (reckless) bigheartedness:

hunter S. thompson introduced George Stranahan to Ralph Steadman, the Gonzo artist who creates all of Flying Dog s signature beer brand labels.
http://www.flyingdogales.com/gonzo-hunter.asp

Long time friend, neighbor and co-conspirator of Flying Dog owner George Stranahan , Hunter was a large influence on George's life and subsequently on the creation of the Flying Dog brand; whether it was riding motorcycles, blowing shit up, or just getting a good, old-fashioned drunk on at the Woody Creek Tavern. These two were fast friends long before Flying Dog Brewery was even a thought. When George opened up shop in Aspen, Hunter would have been one of his best customers; if he had ever paid his tab.
Hunter's greatest contribution to Flying Dog is, of course, introducing George Stranahan to another long-time friend of his, Ralph Steadman . The Gonzo artist creates all of Flying Dog's signature labels.

Dear Guide: There is a famous quote attributed to Hunter S. Thompson that goes something like this: "The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free, and good men die like dogs. There's also a negative side." I have seen this quote changed to describe many businesses from TV to film to corporate America in general. Do you guys have any idea where this quote came from or toward what business it was originally aimed? You are my only hope.

What would you do? You're sitting in Hunter S. Thompson's kitchen conducting an interview and he wants you to drink. So you drink.
I'd been directed to read aloud Thompson's farewell to Richard M. Nixon, "He Was a Crook" ( Rolling Stone, June 16, 1994), an obituary fired off in a burst of rage. The author insisted it be read aloud to capture the right effect, and apparently I hadn't been reading with proper and resounding emphasis.
"No. No! Again. Start over. Clip your words!"
A glass of Wild Turkey and ice was placed in front of me for elocution purposes, of course and the reading proceeded, this time with the benefit of Thompson's coaching.
Earlier that day I'd stopped at the Woody Creek Tavern, in Woody Creek, Colorado, to order a drink and steady my nerves before heading up the hill to the house of the Gonzo Journalist and self-proclaimed King of Fun. Before the night was over I heard the famous peacocks screaming in the dark. I held the Lono club. A shade before two o'clock in the morning I saw my copy of Thompson's latest book

'Gonzo' journalist Hunter S Thompson dies
Legendary US author Hunter S Thompson, a sharp-witted icon of the 1960s counter-culture, has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police say. The 67-year-old writer and journalist, best known for his 1972 book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas , apparently shot himself at his home at Woody Creek, outside the ski resort of Aspen in the western US state of Colorado. Thompson's son, Juan, released a family statement to the Aspen Daily News , saying: "Hunter prized his privacy and we ask that his friends and admirers respect that privacy as well as that of his family." Thompson was considered by many to be one of the most important American authors of the 20th century.
