In this web version the indexes by authors, proper names and subjects have been omitted as it is possible to search more effectively, either by using the Find function on your web browser or by using the advanced search screen on the local studies website. Introduction This is the first issue of the Devon bibliography The bibliography omits many annual publications and most maps and works by local authors without local subject content. Certain categories of material such as OSTED reports and Arthurian literature are also omitted. Audio and video cassettes, CD-ROMs and websites are not covered. While much ephemeral and report literature is listed, much also escapes. The clusters of material on the Cheriton Bishop interchange and the proposed redevelopment of Princesshay in Exeter can only serve as examples of the considerable quantities of this type of publication that are missed. While most of the items listed are represented in the main local studies collections, not all titles necessarily received. Often publications are noted in advance and it subsequently proves impossible to obtain copies. There is much discussion at a national level on the future of legal deposit and the British Library inclines to the opinion that in future the burden of collecting local materials could be shared with libraries across the country. This could enhance the ability of local studies collections to gather this type of material and retain it as the region's published archive, but it will have considerable implications for storage and the resources required to catalogue the material to make it easily accessible. Fortunately in Devon some of the infrastructure has been provided for many years through the publication of the

The book is really about the Oxfordshire village where Flora was born in 1876, but in many ways also tells the common tale of life in the English countryside over a century ago. Flora left her village school at fourteen and worked for more than ten years as a clerk in various post offices. She met her husband to be when they were both post office clerks in Twickenham. They married in 1903 and shortly afterwards moved to Winton where he had got a job in the local post office. They set up home at 4 Sedgley Road and subsequently moved next door to Number 6. Their daughter Winifred was born the following year and christened at St John the Baptist's church in Wimborne Road.
