In The Elephanta Suite , a set of brilliantly evocative and propulsive novellas, he shows us how India, with its furious intensities, its gift for confrontation and its quirky mix of dusty British terms ("jocundity") and the latest American ambitions, might be made for him and his ironic pen. He also reminds us that few travelers can pick up a place with such casual vividness, see Indian script "like washing hanging on a clothesline", or hear both the innocence and threat in "Let we go inside, sir?" or "Having chit, madam?" India is a challenge for many visitors, and no one loves a challenge more than Paul Theroux. The three long stories that make up The Elephanta Suite Those who have been following the prolific novelist's inspired fictions in recent years, from

Paul Theroux was born and educated in the United States. After graduating from university in 1963, he travelled first to Italy and then to Africa, where he worked as a Peace Corps teacher at a bush school in Malawi and as a lecturer at Makerere University in Uganda. In 1968 he joined the University of Singapore and taught in the English Department for three years. Throughout this time he was publishing short stories, articles, and a handful of novels. Success, at least commercial success, did not come easily. In his biography of V.S. Naipaul, , which is at least as revealing about the author himself, Theroux writes:
In 1971, Theroux resigned his position at the University of Singapore to devote himself entirely to writing. He moved with his family to England, where he remained for seventeen years, writing a number of novels and commencing the series of travel books for which he is perhaps most widely noted. He has since returned to the United States, dividing his time between Hawaii and Cape Cod.

    • UK Reviewed by Christian House Sunday, 30 September 2007 The appeal of the Indian trail beaten by the spiritual tourists and yoga groupies defeats me. Reading Paul Theroux's latest foray into fiction, The Elephanta Suite, only added to my reservations. This trio of novellas paints India as a claustrophobic hell-hole swarming with morally reprehensible ex-pats and sinister, overbearing locals. If the book has put me off booking an Air India flight, it has also bolstered the author's reputation as the dirty old man of American letters. The tales vary in subject matter but all possess a misanthropic edge. In "Monkey Hill", Audie and Beth Blunden struggle with their mid-life crises while holidaying in a rural luxury spa. They treat themselves to treatments and flirt with the younger, Indian members of staff. The couple's ignorance of each other's sexual deceptions, and those of the staff, is matched by their inability to foresee the impending danger from local Hindus and Muslims fighting over turf rights to a temple.

Paul Theroux is maybe not a travel writer, I think there is a huge difference between a Travel Writer and a person that writes Travelogues.
I would say he writes travelogues, and I do not wish to insult him by calling him a travel writer. I do think he know the shadow a little too well, and should not be allow to play with sharp objects or left alone too much.
I was introduced to the word Misanthropist as I was reading a book review about this man on the internet, and the word stuck, I cannot remember how to spell and continually need to look it up in the dictionary, however I do not think I am a misanthropist.

The novellas relate to each other on the level of theme rather than plot. The characters connect with their alien surroundings via financial and sexual transactions, and the results for each of them are markedly different. However, Theroux avoids painting the Americans simply as unpleasant and exploitative colonialists; they are more than matched for deviousness by some of their Indian counterparts. He also explores the spiritual side of Indian life with pleasing ambiguity. Although he occasionally makes sweeping generalisations about the country, Theroux mostly succeeds in bringing the whole vivid landscape to life, from society dinners to squalid slums. by Will Gore
