After numerous attempts, Theroux finally obtained a rare visa to travel around the closed Central Asian nation, before the death in December of President Saparmurat Niyazov. In his article, "The Golden Man: Saparmurat Niyazov's Reign Of Insanity," Theroux refers to Niyazov as "one of the wealthiest and most powerful lunatics on Earth" and describes the capital, Ashgabat, as "an example of what happens when absolute political power, money, and mental illness are combined." Oguljamal Yazliyeva, the director of RFE/RL's Turkmen Service, recently spoke with Theroux about his impressions of this mysterious country and its people.

Need audio help? Okay, on an airplane, you really want to avoid the unexpected - get me where I'm going with no alarms, no surprises, please. But hotels, now that's another story. Theroux: "I was staying in a hotel in the middle of Tehran, where a man said, 'Do you realize you're staying in the worst hotel in the world?' I said, well, that's the point. I want trouble. There's something to write about here." Paul Theroux is one of the most famous, prolific and unorthodox travel writers in the world. He once said "tourists don't know where they've been, travelers don't know where they're going." So when you cozy up with a Theroux book like Mosquito Coast or Kowloon Tong you can bet you're not going to be reading a how-to travel guide. Theroux actually began his travel-writing career as a novelist. Paul Theroux's next novel, Hotel Honolulu , is set in Hawaii, and due out this coming April.

Audio Interviews with Paul Theroux
In this 1983 interview, Paul Theroux discusses growing up in Massachusetts in a literary family, joining the Peace Corps, and teaching and living overseas. Paul believes there is no competition in the business of writing, only competition with yourself. He discusses his book The Kingdom by the Sea , which had just been recently published in a hardback edition and he holds a mirror up to England and reveals English prejudices and faults that they ignore, but scorn other people for. Listen to the Paul Theroux interview with Don Swaim, 1983
(25 min. 31 sec.) In this 1984 interview with Don Swaim, Paul Theroux talks about his book, The Kingdom by the Sea . The book, in Theroux's words, tries to reach a conclusion about Great Britain, the country where he lived for thirteen years. He explains that the country is beginning to be a failure for the first time in history, after falling behind after the industrial revolution, and that is very hard on the self-esteem of the British. They go on to talk about some of his other books, writing genres, and how important it is to satisfy one's own curiosities. Listen to the Paul Theroux interview with Don Swaim, 1984

Paul Theroux on the essential life-importance of travel
"Non-travelers often warn the traveler of dangers, and the traveler dismisses such fears, but the presumption of hospitality is just as odd as the presumption of danger. You have to find out for yourself. Take the leap. Go as far as you can. Try staying out of touch. Become a stranger in a strange land. Acquire humility. Learn the language. Listen to what people are saying. It was as a solitary traveler that I began to discover who I was and what I stood for."

Paul Theroux Published: MONDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2005 Misguided aid for Africa Those of us who committed ourselves to being Peace Corps teachers in rural Malawi more than 40 years ago are dismayed by what we see on our return visits and by all the news that has been reported recently from that unlucky, drought-stricken country. But we are more appalled by most of the proposed solutions. I We should know better by now. I would not send private money to a charity, or foreign aid to a government, unless every dollar was accounted for - and this never happens. Dumping more money in the same old way is not only wasteful, but stupid and harmful; it is also ignoring some obvious points. In the early and mid-1960s, we believed that Malawi would soon be self-sufficient in schoolteachers. And it would have been, except that rather than sending a limited wave of volunteers to train local instructors, for decades we kept on sending Peace Corps teachers. Malawians, who avoided teaching because the pay and status were low, came to depend on the American volunteers to teach in bush schools, while educated Malawians emigrated. I got a dusty reception lecturing at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation when I pointed out the successes of responsible policies in Botswana, compared with the kleptomania of its neighbors. Donors enable embezzlement by turning a blind eye to bad governance, rigged elections and the deeper reasons these countries are failing.

American travel writer, novelist, nonfiction writer, short story writer, memoirist, playwright, and children's writer. The following entry presents an overview of Theroux's career through 2001. For further information on his life and works, see CLC, Volumes 5, 8, 11, 15, 28, and 46.
    INTRODUCTION
A prolific travel writer and novelist, Theroux has earned distinction for his vivid, frank, and often cynical depictions of exotic geographic locales and the unglamorous aspects of world tourism. In best-selling travelogues such as The Great Railway Bazaar (1975), which documents his train journey through Central Asia, Theroux turns his unsparing eye on the personalities, habits, and idiosyncrasies of those he encounters, including both indigenous people and fellow travelers. Theroux's fiction, including his popular novel The Mosquito Coast (1981), reflects his experiences abroad and relates the dark humor, irony, and inevitable tragedy that result from engagements between the Western and non-Western world. As a novelist, Theroux often incorporates the literary device of a double self—notably in
