Although perhaps best known as a travel writer, Theroux has also published numerous works of fiction, some of which were made into feature films. He was awarded the 1981 James Tait Black Memorial Prize for his novel The Mosquito Coast

". . . a pleasant enough book, cleanly written in a style which rather resembles Graham Greene's lighter manner. . . . [M]uch of the novel's pleasantness arises from an odd lack of urgency, an absence of bite."
  • Girls at Play
"The book is very convincing. The punctilious realism of the details, the strange, haunting ubiquity of the African landscape, the plausibility of characters divested of the straitjackets of their own conventional worlds, are lessons in a course in the high cost of sudden social change."
  • Jungle Lovers
"There is so much that is admirable in the novel, and deeply-felt; it distresses me to have to say that I, for one, found it ultimately unsatisfying. Forced in the ideological hothouse. Even so, 'Jungle Lovers' abounds with virtues."
  • Saint Jack
"The very great merit of this novel is that the master-play of language serves to define an area of silence at the heart of the percussions that are deafening us."

Paul Theroux talks about his novel, Kowloon Tong , and the implications of the Hong Kong handover
    July 3, 1997

"S tyle is not very important, style's nothing really," V. S. Naipaul once told Paul Theroux. "But a book needs a reason for being written." Theroux took his West Indian mentor's advice to heart a long time ago, but nowhere is his reason for writing a book more evident than in his most recent novel, Kowloon Tong . Set in the waning days of British imperial rule, with China preparing to take back Hong Kong, Kowloon Tong attempts to capture the soul of the city that has been in the news so much of late.
Theroux's connection with The Atlantic goes back to the 1960s. Beginning in 1968 and continuing through 1979, Theroux wrote ten pieces (short stories and reports) for the magazine. Drawn from his extensive experiences in East Africa and Asia, Theroux reported, often with characteristically dry and acidic wit, on the characters hard-drinking soldiers of fortune, aging expatriates, bored diplomats and their discontented wives, jaded foreign correspondents, anglicized Orientals, idealistic young Americans that he had come across in his travels.
Theroux is a prolific writer: he has written more than forty books and has published articles and short stories in a variety of major newspapers and magazines. And he seems to show no signs of slowing down; in 1995 he published

English patience was mingled inertia and despair. What was the use? But Americans did nothing but grumble! Americans also boasted. “I do some pretty incredible things” was not an English expression. “I’m fairly keen” was not American. Americans were showoffs—it was part of our innocence—we often fell on our faces; the English seldom showed off, so they seldom looked like fools.

An interview with the author, from the Salonmagazine.com website.
    http://www.salon.com/weekly/interview960902.html
Paul Theroux, like most writers, is far uglier in person than he is in photographs. For one thing, there's the matter of his bluntly-cut toupee, which tilts noticeably from side to side as he shifts in his chair. For another, there are Theroux's teeth, which are so badly stained they seem to be carved from the driftwood that dots the nearby Cape Cod shoreline. Never mind his unpleasant habit of hacking up massive gobs of phlegm, which he then expectorates into the Persian carpet at his visitor's feet. None of this is true, of course. I've never met Paul Theroux, and have no reason to believe that he wears a toupee, or has rotten teeth, or likes to spit into his carpet. But he has encouraged me, over the course of several telephone conversations, to make things up about him.
    The truth ends here.

Midway through our conversation about Fresh Air Fiend , Paul Theroux reminds me that during the 15 years in which he wrote the 49 travel essays and articles collected here, he also wrote a major book on China (Riding the Iron Rooster), three additional travel books, a controversial memoir about his friendship with V.S. Naipaul (In Sir Vidia's Shadow), and more than a handful of novels (including My Secret History, Millroy the Magician, and Kowloon Tong). Something like a dozen books in all. "It's not that I was writing these pieces with my left hand," Theroux says, "but I was doing other things at the same time. These pieces illuminate those books, and those books derive somewhat from the experiences recorded here. There's a certain synchronicity in writing travel pieces and also living my life as a novelist and a travel writer." This is disheartening. You'd expect perhaps even hope that there'd be a significant decline in quality in these occasional pieces, written over the years for publications as varied as Outside magazine, The New York Times, Vogue, and Vanity Fair. And, no doubt, readers will have their favorites and less favorites among them. But in each of the pieces collected in

    "The Mosquito Coast"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark APR 10, 1999) Allie Fox is sick of the fast foods, television, crime, bad workmanship, and cheap imports. He is interested in the lifestyle of the Central American migrant workers who work for his boss and thus he decides that the answer is to start a new life in the jungles of Honduras. Fox moves his wife and four children from Hatfield, Massachusetts to a remote overgrown clearing on the Mosquito Coast, which he believes is untainted by the modern world. The story is told from the view point of his son Charlie, who admires his father for "not settling for any average Crusoe sort of living." Father builds a solid house (by going down to the beach to collect what is washed in from the world), has running water, toilet and laundry. Once this monumental task is complete, he decides to give a gift to the natives - ice. So he builds a monstrous machine out of old pipes to turn "fire into ice." Naturally, Allie Fox's actions are full of contradictions. Never mind his premise that this is a untainted region of the world. He soon finds that the natives know about ice and worse - Christianity. What works so well in this story is that it is told through the eyes of Charlie. Children naturally believe in their parents, but at the same time they have their own inner sense.
