William Makepeace Thackeray
The English novelist, Thackeray, was born in India to well-to-do parents. At the tender age of 6 years, William was sent away by his mother (his father had died and she had remarried). He was to make the long sea voyage to London, there to attend school. Thackeray was to read law at Cambridge (1829) "but abandoned the idea of the bar in order to explore journalism and art." Thackeray completed no degrees. He spent three years in Paris trying unsuccessfully to be a painter. On returning to England in 1836, he married and turned his hand to writing; he was to soon win "a popular and a critical reputation." Thackeray's works include Vanity Fair The History of Pendennis Henry Esmond (1852) and Newcomes (1853-55). In the The History of Pendennis Thackeray tells of his experiences at Cambridge. " Vanity Fair is the first novel to give a conspectus of London society with its mingling of rich parvenus and decadent upper class ..." The Newcomes show what happens to young lovers when they are left to "the mercy of scheming relatives and meanspirited rival suitors." Though criticized as a historian , Thackeray's The Four Georges (1855) dealing with the Hanoverian kings of England is well worth reading. Then there is Thackeray's

Summary:
Juda has three sons, and finds Thamara to be an attractive bride for his oldest son, Er. Completing the bargain with her father, he presents Thamara to Er. The responsibility of making children is too much for Er, who is a bit wild, and he soon dies. Juda then gives her to his second son, Onan, who is too self-involved to advance the project. The third son is a little young for it, so Juda sends Thamara back to live with her drunken father and wait a few years. Thamara gets impatient, covers her face, and seduces Juda to get children. The Ballad of Bouillabaisse
      A STREET there is in Paris famous,
      For which no rhyme our language yields,
      Rue Neuve de petits Champs its name is
      The New Street of the Little Fields;
      And there's an inn, not rich and splendid,
      But still in comfortable case;
      The which in youth I oft attended,
      To eat a bowl of Bouillabaisse.
      This Bouillabaisse a noble dish is
      A sort of soup, or broth, or brew,
      Or hotchpotch of all sorts of fishes,
      That Greenwich never could outdo;
      Green herbs, red peppers, muscles, saffern,
      Soles, onions, garlic, roach, and dace;
      In that one dish of Bouillabaisse.
      Indeed, a rich and savory stew 'tis;
      And true philosophers, methinks,
      Who love all sorts of natural beauties,
      Should love good victuals and good drinks.
      And Cordelier or Benedictine
      Might gladly, sure, his lot embrace,
      Nor find a fast-day too afflicting,
      Which served him up a Bouillabaisse.
      I wonder if the house still there is?
      Yes, here the lamp is as before;
      Still opening oysters at the door.

    Autograph Letter Signed ("WM Thackeray") to an unnamed correspondent discussing his lecture plans.
    1 page 8vo with half of the integral blank leaf, n.p., 14 March n.y. [docketed "1856"].
    In his small, neat upright hand Thackeray informs his correspondent that "My friends strongly advise that I should give a supplementary lecture, and I learn from Mr. Norman that a requisition to that effect is in course of signature at present. As you could come to no conclusion the other day regarding the Lyceum, and my time is very pressing I have determined to lecture on my own account on Monday ev[enin]g."
    For six month in 1855/56, Thackeray lectured in the United States on "The Four Georges". The public flocked to hear the popular writer, and in spite of some initial coolness in the newspapers's reactions, they were a great success. The income from these lectures was most welcome, and Thackeray saw the flow of dollars as a means of securing his daughters' financial security.

There is a great quantity of eating and drinking, making love and jilting, laughing and the contrary, smoking, cheating, fighting, dancing and fiddling; there are bullies pushing about, bucks ogling the women, knaves picking pockets, policemen on the look-out, quacks (OTHER quacks, plague take them!) bawling in front of their booths, and yokels looking up at the tinselled dancers and poor old rouged tumblers, while the light-fingered folk are operating upon their pockets behind. Yes, this is VANITY FAIR; not a moral place certainly; nor a merry one, though very noisy. Look at the faces of the actors and buffoons when they come off from their business; and Tom Fool washing the paint off his cheeks before he sits down to dinner with his wife and the little Jack Puddings behind the canvas.
