Floating Without a Mother: Missing Mothers in Young Adult Fiction” Grant T. Smith, Ph. D. Viterbo University La Crosse Wisconsin Atlanta NCTE Conference—November 21-26 I began thinking seriously about the convention of “missing mothers” in young adult fiction a few months ago while I was teaching a class titled: Literature for Young People at Viterbo University The class was comprised primarily of middle school and secondary school education majors as well as several “media specialist” majors. And there were also a few students who said they missed out on young adult literature in high school because they were either “late readers” or readers who took the AP Honors track and thus read Heart of Darkness instead of The Chocolate Wars It was perhaps the liveliest class I have ever taught. All of the students voiced strong opinions about the books we read in class. No one was reluctant to share personal (even intimate) responses to Jacob Have I Loved Black Boy , and Annie on My Mind Thus I was not surprised when one day a student raised her hand and asked a question that generated much discussion and thought: “Dr. Smith,” she asked, “Why is it that so many of the books we read in this class have a missing mother?”

Lovely novel Yolanda's Genius includes a teenage girl who is over weight and African American. The girl's weight problems are not the story's major focus, but the character certainly has an awareness of her size. I saw at least one cover for the novel that showed the heroine as only the merest bit pudgy and had my usual fizzle of frustration with publisher's who misrepresent characters and content. Fitzhugh, Louize NOBODY'S FAMILY IS GOING TO CHANGE.

Power and Hunger: Self-will and self-starvation in the novels and lives of Emily and Charlotte Bronte. In his book, Holy Anorexia , Rudolph Bell sites a case of anorexia in a 20 year old girl from as early as 1686 (3). In fact, eating disorders were fairly common in the time leading up to the Brontë's era, although the motivations behind them were often quite dissimilar. Today, young women are often driven to starve themselves because, "they must conform to an impossible, media-driven standard of beauty which holds that 'you can never be too thin.'" (Orenstein 94) In the 18th and 19th century, however, thinness was not an ideal to strive towards, and the psychology behind fasting and starvation was oftentimes more complicated. Purely religious reasons were not always behind a woman's fastingit was often used as a means to exert control by women who were essentially powerless in their societies. Bemporad sites one of these cases which took place in the Dark Ages; a young woman who was betrothed by her father against her wishes, starves herself until she becomes so unattractive that her suitor refuses to marry her (3). This theme occurs in literature about the 19th century as well; in a popular young adult novel set in 1899, the heroine starves herself to the brink of death after being forced into an engagement that she finds unbearable (Terris).

Terri Schiavo, daughter.
W hen I saw The Passion of the Christ
It was so moving because it was so right. Director Mel Gibson imagined this meeting, the dialogue. But how precise.
What else is a mother to do? Some say Terri is not cognizant of anything going on around her and that her expressions are just reflexes. Tell that to any mom whose baby smiles for the first time and hears from the "sage" onlooker, "It's just gas, babies can't smile." Baloney. Mothers know differently. Now with the super-level sonograms, we even see photos of babies smiling in the womb. We've seen the famous photo of the baby, being operated on in utero, reaching out of its mother's womb to grasp the doctor's gloved finger. A need for human contact or just a reflex? Humans, in all stages of development, display their natural yearning for a human touch, a soft word, a smile.
I've been married to my husband for 14 years and I trust him implicitly. I trust him with the lives of our children. We named each other as the responsible parties in our wills. We filled out those living wills less than two years ago at the suggestion of our lawyer but I can't remember what I said. Probably that I would want them to hook me up to as many machines as they could find while they tried to figure out what was wrong with me. If I become that ill, I figure the Lord will take me if He wants me. In any case, the wills are in the filing cabinet if push comes to shove.

An Electronic Back Issue ABSTRACT Analysis of Young Adult literature spanning 1975-1999 reveals an imbedded link between body image, weight, and sexuality: thinner young women are portrayed as powerful and in control, while larger women are depicted as sexually passive and irresponsible. Young Adult fiction, often maligned or ignored by literary critics, is an important body of work that should be studied by women's studies scholars, literary critics, and educators.
