Natural and Dreamy
In the equation of being a poet, writing poems is the mathematics to the left of the equal sign, to the right of the equation is the work of helping poems reach an audience. Susan Terris is one of the poets I admire for her ability to keep her work as a poet in balance according to that equation. Natural Defenses and Fires Is Favorable to the Dreamer were both published within a year of one another and each have numerous previous publication credits—thirty-one and forty-one respectively from a broad range of well-respected journals. Terris’ belief in her work and commitment to finding an audience who will appreciate her work is significant and note-worthy, especially because the work itself is strong and notable.
Natural Defenses is divided into four sections titled, "Afterimages," "Fugue State," "The Iron Handle," and "The Book of Responses." Afterimages are “when the first colors [are] gone” (p. 12) and Terris explores what remains in these opening poems of the collection. One of my favorite poems in this section is “In The Familiar Tense” about Mary Cassatt and Degas. Terris writes, “Stroking the dog’s muzzle, Mary let it silken warmth/soothe her. When we met, then I began to live.” The first line is but one example of the fine sonic sense that Terris infuses into her work, with the echoing “k”s at the beginning and end of the line and the sibilance which dances through it.

Through the nodding poppies.
Search for the muscled cat,
The steel coyote blue-washed
By the setting moon.
Like all else,
Before morning. Loss is
A ghost path through deep grass,
Its forks, its finite lines,
Its disappearance.
And you can dream it, Angle through cloud, Wake from the dream And, awake now, dream it again.

by suffering as it is informed by wisdom.
A lready established as a unique and vivid voice, in her latest book, Duties of the Spirit (Tupelo Press, 2005), Patricia Fargnoli further proves her mettle both as poet and person. More personal and narrative than her last book, Small Songs of Pain (Pecan Grove, 2004), this latest offering testifies to Fargnoli's endurance in the face of psychic and physical pain and privation.
While too narrow a focus on individual experience and the private, internal world of a poet can undermine art and universality, Fargnoli so adeptly the impossible is shaking Afterwards the bed, with its turned down silk. a thing so dark, it seemed snipped from the burlap of shadow high in the rafters above our candlelight could almost be unnoticed, as those gathered for dinner

      THE PUDDING HOUSE COLLECTION
      SPEC. CMS. 100
      (Compiled by Sarah Hogue, 2002)
      INTRODUCTION
The Pudding House (publisher and editor, Jennifer Bosveld) has been a remarkably successful small-press poetry publisher in Central Ohio since 1980. In that year Pudding Magazine began, and its publication continues to the present day. In 1982, Bosveld began publishing chapbooks, books, and anthologies: this activity has been increased year by year, with dozens of titles announced for 2001 alone. The poets come from all over the United States, and a few from other countries. One of the characteristics of Bosveld’s editorial work has been the wide variety and inclusivity of styles and approaches she has embraced. From the wildly experimental, to mainstream small press styles, and to academic poetry; Pudding House has included them all. The inclusivity is especially apparent in the Greatest Hits series. Begun in the year 2000, this is a project in which each invited poet chooses 12 of their most important poems and provides an introduction to them. Pudding House thus provides a useful cross-section of poetries of the late 20th century and the early 21st. It is also distinguished by a consistent interest in what Bosveld calls
