Purchase Plays by Terence
Seeking the pleasures and deceitful praise
Of nobles, while the Bard with greedy ears
Drinks in the voice divine of Africanus,
Caress'd and often, for his bloom of youth,
Whirl'd to Mount Alba; amidst all these joys,
He finds himself reduced to poverty.
Wherefore withdrawing from all eyes, and flying
To the extremest parts of Greece, he dies
At Stymphalus, a village lit Arcadia. When Terence, as he is commonly called in English speech, offered his first play, the Andrian The Eunuch
some verses from the Self-Tormentor To wipe off the aspersion of plagiarism, or perhaps to make himself a master of the customs and manners of the Grecians, in order to delineate them the better in his writings, Terence left Rome in the twenty-fifth year of his age, after having exhibited the six comedies which are still extant; and he never returned. Some ancient writers relate that he died at sea. He is said to have been of middle stature, genteel and of a swarthy complexion. He left a daughter, who was afterward married to a Roman knight; and, according to the best authorities, at the time of his death he was possessed of a house, together with six acres of land, on the Appian way.

SCOTT ELLIOTT GETS MARRIED My Hollywood private eye, Scott Elliott , has a new title, his first novella, In a Teapot . It was released in September by the Mystery Company, an imprint of the Crum Creek Press, the publisher who brought out the paperback edition of Elliott's first case, Kill Me Again . Teapot is a 23,000 word mystery, in hardcover, complete with illustrations by Michigan artist Robin Agnew. The story, set in 1948, not long after Kill Me Again , involves an attempt to film Shakespeare's The Tempest, with a cast drawn from Hollywood's famed British colony. The filming is interrupted by a murder, the investigation of which is interrupted in turn by Elliott's wedding to the lovely Ella (Pidgin) Englehart. I think The Mystery Company did a beautiful job on this book, which the Chicago Tribune called "a short, tasty lemon meringue. . . ingredients: wit, humor, and characters just a little larger than life." I'm prejudiced, of course, but I think it would make a great stocking stuffer for any mystery reader. OWEN KEANE RETURNS The Confessions of Owen Keane , the first Keane book since 1999's Orion Rising, is now available.

But I still remain sceptical about that.

THE LAST GLASS CEILING?
January 11th, 2008 So, what do the first caucuses and primaries tell us about the last glass ceiling in American Presidential politics? Is it race, as some surmise after New Hampshire? Is it gender, as some concluded after Iowa? Is it both? Or do the results demonstrate that neither is meaningful anymore? Women outvoted men 57-43 per cent in both Iowa and New Hampshire, but with opposite results. In Iowa, they broke for Obama by 35-30 per cent, and arguably, gave him the victory. In New Hampshire, the state with the second highest percentage of women in its legislature (nearly 36 per cent,) they went strongly for Clinton by 46-29 per cent, more than enough to give her the margin. Conclusion? Memo to the media: take nothing for granted. Neither state of course, has a large bloc of African-American voters. We will have to wait for South Carolina and other states to see how the black vote actually breaks in a 2008 presidential primary. Again, media, take nothing for granted. When it comes to voting, as in sports, the differences between men and women are more telling than between whites and blacks. Rightly or wrongly, men hold women to a different, more demanding standard when judging whether they are fit for the presidency.

Erowid Character Vaults Terence McKenna Nov 16, 1946 - Apr 3, 2000 (2:15 am) Summary Terence McKenna was a psychedelic author, explorer, and showman. He was born in 1946 and grew up in Paonia, Colorado. In high school he moved to Los Altos, California and from there attended U.C. Berkeley for two years before setting off to travel. He travelled widely in Asia, South America, and Europe during his college years and his first book, co-authored with his brother Dennis McKenna , was based on their 1971 investigations of Amazonian hallucinogens.
In 1975, Terence graduated from Berkeley with a degree in ecology, resource conservation, and shamanism. Soon thereafter, he and Dennis pseudonymously published one of the earliest psilocybin mushroom growing guides under the names Oss and Oeric. Terence then spent some time doing large-scale farming of psilocybin mushrooms during the 1980s.
In 1985, Terence co-founded the non-profit Botanical Dimensions, with Kathleen Harrison-McKenna, to collect and propagate medicinal and shamanic plants from the tropics around the world. During the 90s, he wrote and lectured widely about shamanism, ethnopharmacology, and psychoactive plants and chemicals (especially psilocybin mushrooms and DMT). His sometimes fantasic theories, lectures, and writings led some to dismiss him as a kook, some to follow him as a visionary, and others to enjoy him as an intellectual entertainer.

    the name game
I'm not very good with remembering names. It's like you meet a person, find out his name, talk about stuff and sometimes that person's name gets lost in the conversation of common topics and nuclear powered weather balloons.
Fear not! There are a number of ways to get around this though. All with their own risks of failure.
    1. Ask for the email address
This is quite a low risk method. It doesn't always work however, if the person's email doesn't contain the name (e.g, ultraman@... or sunshineflower@...). The chances of getting caught out are low as it is quite innocuous.
    2. Ask for the phone number
Forgot his name? Simple! Hand your mobile over and ask him to type in his number (easier for him to do). Goes without a hitch most of the time.. EXCEPT when he types only the number in and hands it back. 2 choice now; either type in something, or risk asking how to spell his name (and hope it isn't an easy to spell one like t-o-m or j-o-h-n). Potentially disastrous.
    3. Re-ask for name.

    Research Interests:
In recent years some new types of proofs have been found about the representation of primes by particular quadratic forms. The first of these was Heath-Brown's proof of Fermat's two-squares theorem in 1984. Then in 1990 Zagier gave a 'one-sentence' proof that required almost no background. I found a similar short proof of the fact that primes congruent to 3 modulo 8 are of the form x^2 + 2y^2 (Amer Math Monthly, vol 107, p447).
My paper in the proceedings of the 1999 Turku conference gave a different short proof of this and also gave a direct proof that primes congruent to 7 modulo 12 are of the form x^2 + 3y^2 . In the proceedings of the 14th Czech/Slovak number theory conference I have explored the connection between these direct proofs and automorphs of ternary quadratic forms.
