For other uses, see Terence (disambiguation) Publius Terentius Afer , better known as Terence , was a playwright of the Roman Republic . His comedies were performed for the first time ca. 160 BC , and he died young probably in 159 BC , in Greece or on his way back to Rome . Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator , brought Terence to Rome as a slave, educated him and later on, impressed by his abilities, freed him. All of the six plays Terence wrote have survived (by comparison, his predecessor Plautus wrote twenty-one extant plays). One famous quote by Terence reads: " Homo sum, humani nil a me alienum puto ", or "I am human, nothing that is human is alien to me." This appeared in his play Heauton Timorumenos
edit Biography
Terence's date of birth is disputed; Aelius Donatus , in his incomplete Commentum Terenti , considers the year 185 BC to be the year Terentius was born; Fenestella , on the other hand, states that he was born ten years earlier, in 195 BC He may have been born in Carthage or in Greek Italy to a woman taken to Carthage as a slave. A biography of the Roman playwright terence, or Publius Terentius Afer; includes a list of related links.
Home Ancient Theatre Medieval Theatre 16th Century ... Email Us TERENCE (c. 190-158 B.C.) T HE second important writer of Latin comedies presents a remarkable contrast to the first. Terence (Publius Terentius Afer), probably a native of Carthage, was a slave in the family of a Roman patrician. On account of his witty conversation and graceful manners, he became a favorite in the fashionable society of Rome and received his freedom. His work, so far as we know it, consists of two sorts: fairly close translations of Menander , and contaminations. There are six extant plays, three of which, The Brothers, The Girl of Andros, and The Eunuch , are contaminations. Each is made from two Greek plays. Of the remaining three, the Phormio is based on a play by the Greek Apollodorus, and the others are from Menander. The Brothers (Adelphi) The weakness of Terence lies in his lack of the bolder elements of action. His characters are somewhat deficient in variety, and his situations are inferior to those of

3. Publius Terentius Afer (195 Or 185 - 159 B.C.)
Biography of Roman playwright terence, plus links to all of his works currently in print.
Publius Terentius Afer Publius Terentius Afer, a Phoenician, was born about 190 B.C. in Carthage. He was brought to Rome as a slave, but his master quickly recognized the young man's potential and chose not only to emancipate him, but to provide him with a classic Roman education. Unlike Plautus , Terence was not the people's poet, but the darling of the aristocracy. His refined literary abilities made the young man a popular companion of the cosmopolitans of high society. He even won the admiration of figures such as Cicero and Horace. Terence took for his springboard the comedies of Menander . His first play, Andria which was written at the age of nineteenwas later adapted by Richard Steele in The Conscious Lovers . The only one of Terence's plays not adapted from Menander was Phormio , which was based on the work of Apollodorus, another writer of New Comedy. Moliere, in turn, adapted Phormio in one of his earliest plays

Terence McKenna has been studying the ontological foundations of Shamanism and the Ethnopharmacology of spiritual transformation for the past quarter century. An innovative theoretician and spellbinding orator, Terence has emerged as a powerful voice for the psychedelic movement and the emergent societal tendency he calls The Archaic Revival . Poetically dispensing enlightened social criticism and new theories of the fractal dynamics of time, Terence deobfuscates many aspects of the visionary lexicon, and then some. As

My Motto: Why program by hand in five days what you can spend five years of your life automating?
Terence Parr is a professor of computer science at the University of San Francisco where he continues to work on his ANTLR parser generator, Terence recently returned from years in industry where he co-founded He herded programmers and implemented the large jGuru developers web site, during which time he developed and refined the StringTemplate engine. Terence has consulted for and held various technical positions at companies such as IBM, Lockheed Missiles and Space, NeXT, and Renault Automation. Terence holds a Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Purdue University and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Army High-Performance Computing Research Center at the University of Minnesota where he built parallelizing FORTRAN source-to-source translators.
Educational philosophy:
I have two primary teaching goals regardless of the course subject matter. First, I try to dramatically increase a student's self-expectations and, of course, their knowledge about the subject. Being a good teacher means stretching students without discouraging them or destroying their confidence. Second, I insist that students learn self-reliance; students must attempt solutions on their own and then, if they have failed, come to me for help. Students must get used to learning new concepts and technologies, solving their own problems, and doing their own research. As a programmer, they will constantly have to keep up with the latest advances to avoid becoming unemployable.

25 January, 2008 in admin book 12 comments almost a year since I moved my from my home page Anyway, after discussing things with some of my friends and colleagues, I have decided to convert some of the posts here from 2007 into a book format, in order to place some of the mathematical content here in a more formal and traditional context (with accurate citations and references, etc.). After some thought, I decided not to transcribe all of my posts from last year (there are 93 of them!), but instead to restrict attention to those articles which (a) have significant mathematical content, (b) are not announcements of material that will be published elsewhere, and (c) are not primarily based on a talk given by someone else. As it turns out, this still leaves about 33 articles from 2007, leading to a decent-sized book of a couple hundred pages in length. For various reasons (including legal reasons), I have decided not to incorporate the comments to each post directly into the book format, although corrections, mention of relevant references, etc. will be added with acknowledgments in the endnotes to each article. converted a couple articles into a book format
