Alfred Tennyson
ALFRED TENNYSON was born at Somersby, near Spilsby, England, August 6, 1810 (given 1809 by some, and January 12, 1810, by others).
His father was the Rev. George Clayton Tennyson, LL.D., a Lincolnshire clergyman, who is described as "a tall, striking and imposing man, full of accomplishments and parts, a strong nature, high souled, high tempered." Alfred's mother was the daughter of the Rev. Stephen Fyche. To the Rev. Tennyson were born eleven or twelve children, seven of whom were sons. The three eldest, Frederick, Charles and Alfred, formed a brotherhood of poets, though Alfred is the only one who gained great literary distinction.
At an early age Tennyson showed signs of poetic powers. On one occasion, when the members of the family were going to church, Charles handed Alfred a slate and gave him a subject for a poem. Upon returning home, Alfred took the slate to his brother, with a poem covering both sides. Charles scanned the lines, then handed the slate back with the encouragement, "Yes, Alfred, you can write." The next instance was not so encouraging. Upon the death of his grandmother the young poet was asked to write an elegy that would be appropriate. The task was performed, whereupon Alfred's grandfather handed the boy ten shillings, saying, "There, that is the first money you have earned by your poetry, and, take my word for it, it will be the last." But the youth persevered, and, before he was nineteen, published a volume of poems conjointly with his brother Charles. In 1829 he gained the Chancellor's medal for an English prize poem, his subject being "

Biographical note Poet, was the fourth son of George Tennyson, Rector of Somersby, Lincolnshire, where he was born His father was himself a poet of some skill, and his two elder brothers, Frederick Tennyson ( q.v. ) and Charles Tennyson Turner ( q.v. ), were poets of a high order. His early education was received from his father, after which he went to the Grammar School of Louth, whence in 1828 he proceeded to Trinity College, Cambridge In the previous year had appeared a small vol., Poems by Two Brothers , chiefly the work of his brother Charles and himself, with a few contributions from Frederick, but it attracted little attention. At the University he was one of a group of highly gifted men, including Trench ( q.v. ), Monckton Milnes, afterwards Lord Houghton ( q.v. ), Alford ( q.v. Timbuctoo , and in the following year he brought out his first independent work, Poems chiefly Lyrical . It was not in general very favourably received by the critics, though Wilson in admitted much promise and even performance. In America it had greater popularity. Part of 1832 was spent in travel with Hallam, and the same year saw the publication of

SIR GALAHAD
by
ALFRED, LORD TENNYSON
My good blade carves the casques of men,
My tough lance thrusteth sure,
My strength is as the strength of ten,
Because my heart is pure.
The shattering trumpet shrilleth high,
The hard brands shiver on the steel,
The splinter'd spear-shafts crack and fly,
The horse and rider reel:
They reel, they roll in clanging lists,
And when the tide of combat stands, Perfume and flowers fall in showers, That lightly rain from ladies' hands. How sweet are looks that ladies bend On whom their favours fall! For them I battle till the end, To save from shame and thrall: But all my heart is drawn above, My knees are bow'd in crypt and shrine: I never felt the kiss of love, Nor maiden's hand in mine. More bounteous aspects on me beam, Me mightier transports move and thrill; So keep I fair thro' faith and prayer A virgin heart in work and will.

Introduction to The Princess by Bill McCann
Gilbert based his book for Princess Ida on one of his earlier plays, The Princess . This, in turn was based on the poem of the same name by Alfred Lord Tennyson . During the discussion of Princess Ida Stephen B. Sullivan Harriet Meyer who also provided invaluable insight and comment on the developing on-line version of this little corner of Tennyson's output which, were it not for Gilbert, might have remained totally lost to the late 20th century inhabitants of cyberspace. We decided to use the text from the 1881 edition of the complete works published in London. It quickly became obvious that, in order for this on-line version of the poem to fulfill all the requirements which we had set for it, substantial annotation would be necessary. In particular, this would need to "translate" much of the arcane language of the poem and explain some of the conventions of 19th century Romantic Poetry. We are in the process of compiling a commentary, using frames, and believe that this will be the first critical version of The Princess to appear on the World Wide Web. (Look for the annotation by the end of the year - Steve) Alfred Lord Tennyson succeeded Wordsworth as Poet Laureate in 1850, three years after he composed

Tennyson, Alfred Lord (1809-1892)
page: Surely few literary figures so directly challenge reductive notions of sexual identity as does the Victorian poet Alfred Lord Tennyson. In Memoriam is both Tennyson's greatest work and the most beautiful homoerotic elegy in the English language, yet there is little doubt that Tennyson himself was sexually attracted to women. Androgynous male characters and homoeroticism abound throughout Tennyson's poetry, particularly from his early years, but he is often considered one of the stuffiest and most prudish of his generation of writers. So, one might ask, what does one do with Tennyson? Rather than dismissing him as an anomaly, it seems much more productive to allow Tennyson to disrupt our overly easy classifications of writers and to recognize through his work that transgression is much more common than rigid adherence to narrow, though convenient, literary and sexual categories. Tennyson's Life and Career Tennyson's life and career spans the nineteenth century, capturing the Victorian age in many of its complexities. Born on August 6, 1809, in Somersby, England, to an Anglican minister, George Clayton Tennyson, and his wife, Elizabeth Fytche Tennyson, Alfred demonstrated his considerable poetic talents at a very early age, composing his first lines of verse at age five and his first poem at age eight. He and his brothers Frederick and Charles produced a full book of poetry in 1827, when Alfred was barely eighteen.

1st Baron Tennyson, Alfred Tennyson Biography (known as AlfredLord Tennyson
Alfred Tenyson, known as Alfred, Lord Tennyson, poet. Poet, born in Somersby, Lincolnshire, E England, UK. He studied at Cambridge, and published his first poetry in 1829, but it was not well received; a revised volume in 1842 established his reputation, including such major poems as ‘The Lady of Shallott’ and ‘The Lotus-eaters’. His major poetic achievement was the elegy mourning the death of his friend Arthur Hallam, ‘In Memoriam’ (1850); and in the same year he succeeded Wordsworth as poet laureate. In 1855 he wrote Maud: a Monodrama , and 1859–85 published a series of poems on the Arthurian theme, Idylls of the King (1859). In the 1870s he wrote several plays, and continued to write poetry until his death. In his later years, he was acclaimed by the whole nation, and he was created a baron in 1884. Marriage Morning
a poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson
    Light, so low upon earth,
You send a flash to the sun.
Here is the golden close of love,
    All my wooing is done.
Oh, the woods and the meadows,
Woods where we hid from the wet,
Stiles where we stay'd to be kind,
    Meadows in which we met!
Light, so low in the vale
You flash and lighten afar, For this is the golden morning of love, And you are his morning star. Flash, I am coming, I come, By meadow and stile and wood, Oh, lighten into my eyes and heart, Into my heart and my blood! Heart, are you great enough For a love that never tires? O' heart, are you great enough for love? I have heard of thorns and briers, Over the meadow and stiles, Over the world to the end of it Flash for a million miles.
