REFERENCE LINKS PRINT EMAIL Teasdale, Sara Teasdale, Sara (1884-1933), was an American lyric poet. Some of her work anticipates modern feminist verse and the intimate, autobiographical style known as confessional poetry. A large number of Teasdale's poems deal with love and death. Many of the speakers in her lyrics are women who face the death or desertion of a loved one. They also face the fact of their own mortality with disillusionment, but not as cynics. Teasdale associated moral and spiritual beauty with the harmonies of the natural world.

Teasdale, Sara (1884-1933) As reflected in her poetry, the strongest emotional relationships in Sara Teasdale's life were with women. Teasdale might be viewed as a casualty of the struggle between propriety and passion that marked late Victorian social mores. Born in St. Louis into a genteel middle-class family, she was overprotected by her mother, who instilled in her young daughter an anxiety about her own bodyits physical inadequacy and its ailmentsthat was to affect both her work and her personal relationships for most of her brief life. Sponsor Message.
Because of her mother's fears, Teasdale was educated at home until she was nine, and, left to herself, she retreated into her own dreamy world; she spent hours fantasizing about the romantic possibilities of her own life. Keeping reality at a tasteful distance became a habit of her life and of her art. Although she cultivated romantic obsessions about men, the strongest relationships in her life were with women. After completing her college education at Hosmer Hall in St. Louis, she and several other young women formed a literary association called The Potters, which published a monthly magazine

POEMS
Driftwood My forefathers gave me
My spirit's shaken flame,
The shape of hands, the beat of heart,
The letters of my name.
But it was my lovers,
And not my sleeping sires,
Who gave the flame its changeful
And iridescent fires;
As the driftwood burning
Learned its jewelled blaze
From the sea's blue splendor Of colored nights and days. ~Sara Teasdale Back to Top Barter Life has loveliness to sell, All beautiful and splendid things, Blue waves whitened on a cliff, Soaring fire that sways and sings, And children's faces looking up Holding wonder like a cup. Life has loveliness to sell, Music like a curve of gold, Scent of pine trees in the rain, Eyes that love you, arms that hold, And for your spirit's still delight, Holy thoughts that star the night. Spend all you have for loveliness, Buy it and never count the cost;

Strephon's kiss was lost in jest, Robin's lost in play, But the kiss in Colin's eyes Haunts me night and day. Sara Teasdale A delicately beautiful little poem - I love both the central image, and the light, sure touch with which Teasdale develops it. And, as usual with Teasdale's poetry, the combination of quietness and power, both masked by an apparent simplicity, is nothing short of impressive. There is, however (and unusually enough that I wonder if I'm misscanning the poem), a slight roughness to the seventh line - I keep wanting to insert an 'oh,' after the 'but' to restore the regular iambic pattern. How interesting that Teasdale would have borrowed themprobably one of the few poets of her time to do so. The feeling, though, is Victorian, as the speaker dwells upon the shepherd lost with a wistfulness the Elizabethans, on the whole, did not find particularly desirable. Bob Champ

    The Long Hill
      I must have passed the crest a while ago
      And now I am going down
      Strange to have crossed the crest and not to know,
      But the brambles were always grabbing at the hem of my gown.
      All the morning I thought how proud I should be
      To stand there straight as a queen,
      Wrapped in the wind and the sun with the world under me
      But the air was dull, there was little I could have seen.
      It was nearly level along the beaten track
      And the brambles caught in my gown
      But it's no use now to think of turning back,
      The rest of the way will be only going down.

US poet. Her early poetry, such as Love Songs (1917), was marked by a delicate lyricism, but her later poems, as in Strange Victory (1933), reveal a more intense core. Afflicted with bouts of depression, she committed suicide in New York City. hut(1)

I had a period where I read Teasdale's poetry over and over again. I was in my late teens (17-19). She is today perhaps best known for her "Love Songs," "Helen of Troy and other poems," and "Sonnets to Duse" (she became infatuated and admired the actress so), and her poetry in this vein may be likened to Christina Rossetti's; Teasdale uses the devices of repetition we've been talking about; here's a famous one:
I shall not care
When I am dead and over me bright April
Shakes out her rain-drenched hair,
Tho' you should lean above me broken-hearted,
I shall not care.
I shall have peace, as leafy trees are peaceful
When rains bends down the bough,
And I shall be more silent and cold-hearted Than you are now. Just a stanza from "I Would Live in Your Love" I would live in your love as the sea-grasses live in the sea

Six letters written to Jean Starr Untermeyer, chiefly discussing personal matters, including one from 1914 commenting on Teasdale's difficulty in deciding whether to marry Vachel Lindsay or Ernst Filsinger. A ten-page letter to John Myers O'Hara dated July 1909 praises his recently published book "At Erato's Fane". Other letters concern a request to use one of her poems in a song, and the response to a request that she give a lecture at the University of Chicago. Love Songs Teasdale wrote several collections of poetry in the following decade and became known for the intensity of her lyrics. Expressing disenchantment with marriage, Teasdale's later poetry resonated with suffering and strength.
