ABOUT THE LOGAN FAMILY SAGA All of Mildred D. Taylor's novels to date are based on stories from her own family, stories she learned at family gatherings throughout her life. In her Author's Note in The Land , she explains that her great-grandfather was the basis for the character Paul-Edward: "In writing The Land , I have followed closely the stories told by my father and others about my great-grandparents. From as far back as I can remember, I had heard stories about my great-grandfather, who bought the family land in Mississippi. Born the children of an African-Indian woman and a white plantation owner during slavery, my great-grandfather and his sister were brought up by both their parents. Their father had three sons by a white wife, and he acknowledged all of his children. He taught his children to read and write, and he ordered his white sons to share their school learning with them. All the children sat at their father's table for meals, and my great-grandfather often went with his father and his brothers on their trips around the community." ( The Land Similarly, in her other novels, nearly all the events are based on stories Taylor has heard from her father and other family members; nearly all the characters are based on family members or acquaintances she has known or learned about. The Logan family saga, then, is essentially family history for Taylor. The saga begins with Paul-Edward Logan in

US writer. She has written realistic stories to help teach children of all colours about racism. Her books tell of the lives of black people in racially prejudiced white communities, and they often show the strength and security of family life side by side with the evils of racism. They include Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (1976), for which she won the Newberry Medal in 1977, and Let the Circle be Unbroken Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi, USA. She grew up and went to school in Toledo, Ohio, where she was the only black student in her class. After university she taught with the Peace Corps in Africa and saw a pride and independence among the people there that reminded her of the stories her father had told her about his slave ancestors. She decided to write stories which would correct the history books and give a true picture of black Americans in the world. When she returned to the USA, she studied journalism at Colorado University. hut(1)

Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Mildred D Taylor
Reviewer: Jill Murphy It is a long walk to school, through miles of dirty, unyielding red Mississippi dust in the warm months, and through miles of dirtier, even more unyielding red Mississippi mud in the rainy ones. It is the first day of the school year, and in honour of that Cassie Logan and her brothers Stacey, Christopher-John and Little Man are wearing their Sunday clothes. It is an impossible feat to stay clean, especially when the school bus taking the white children to school makes a daily sport of speeding up as it passes them, spewing clouds of red dust, or waves of red mud which cover them from head to foot unless they leap into the undergrowth on the side of the path. And even that makes them filthy. Cassie, her brothers and their friend, TJ, don't have a school bus, because they are black, and they go to the school for black children. Cassie's parents, however, are wise, good people and they preserve happy times for their children, laughing times, full of meals, and love, and stories and songs to remember: "In the fireplace itself, in a black pan set on a high wire rack, peanuts roasted over the hickory fire as the waning light of day swiftly deepened into a fine velvet night speckled with white forerunners of a coming snow, and the warm sound of husky voices and rising laughter mingled in tales of sorrow and happiness of days past but not forgotten… Through the evening Papa and Uncle Hammer and Big Ma and Mr Morrison and Mama lent us their memories, acting out their tales with stageworthy skills, imitating the characters in voice, manner and action so well that the listeners held their sides with laughter. It was a good warm time."

Taylor, Mildred D. The land . Speak/Penguin, 2001 [0-14-250146-8]
In this prequel to "Roll of thunder" Taylor takes us back to the years just after the Civil War. Paul (a former slave) is the 14 year-old son of a large farm owner. While he is treated well by his father, he is not white and now allowed many of the other privileges is white brothers receive. Taylor uses the language of the day, refusing to "whitewash" history. The language (the use of the "n-word") and story can be harsh. After many struggles with his father, Paul and a black friend of his set out on their own. Paul decides that he wants to own land, hence the books title. This 375 page book is a long and sometimes painful read. It documents the harsh treatments former slaves received at the hands of the white people of the south after they had been freed. This is a must-read for 7th graders and up.
