Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi, and grew up in Toledo, Ohio. Although she decided to become a writer very early in her life, Ms. Taylor has pursued many other goals and interests in addition to writing. After graduating from the University of Toledo, she spent two years in Ethiopia with the Peace Corps teaching English and history, "the happiest years" in her adult life. Returning to the United States, she recruited for the Peace Corps before entering the School of Journalism at the University of Colorado. As a member of the Black Student Alliance she worked with students and university officials in structuring a Black Studies programme at the university. Upon receiving her master's degree, she worked in the Black Education Programme as study skills coordinator.

Taylor, one of the foremost writers for young people in the United States for nearly three decades, has been named laureate of the inaugural $25,000 NSK Neustadt Prize for Children's Literature, awarded by the University of Oklahoma and its international quarterly, World Literature Today
The NSK Prize was established by Nancy Barcelo, Susan Neustadt Schwartz and Kathy Neustadt Hankin to encourage the improvement of writing for children by honoring an accomplished contemporary writer of children's literature every other year. The three sisters are members of a pioneer Oklahoma family whose support of the university spans more than a half-century, beginning with a gift from their grandparents, Walter Sr. and Doris Westheimer Neustadt, that ultimately became Max Westheimer Airpark. Doris Westheimer Neustadt later provided the endowment for the world-renowned Neustadt International Prize for Literature, also awarded by OU and World Literature Today , which is widely considered to be the "American Nobel" and one of the most prestigious international literary prizes. Book Review
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry is a novel of realistic fiction that concerns itself with issues of prejudice, courage, and self-respect. The story occurs in a small town in Mississippi in 1933, during the height of the Depression. The author allows the reader to experience the racial issues of the time through the eyes of an initially naive Cassie Logan. The racial tension and types of events experienced by young Cassie, her family, and town members cause her to grown up and discover the reality of her environment. This is a powerful book that should be read by all people. Mildred Taylor vividly portrays the racial and economic climate during this period in American history. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry can easily be used in conjunction with social studies lessons on the Great Depression , segregation, the sharecropping system, slavery, and Reconstruction. It should be used in units based on family values, prejudice, courage, self-respect, growing up. The possibilities for this superb novel are only limited by the imagination of the educator.

Review
The main character in this book, Paul Edward, is the Grandfather of Cassie Logan from Mildred D. Taylor's Newbery Award winning Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry making this a prequel. Paul was born from the partnership of a slave and the white master of the plantation in Mississippi. Slavery ended when he was still very young but he, his sister, and his mother have stayed on the plantation. Paul's mother is the cook and housekeeper. Paul's father acknowledges his black children and they are part of his family although they can't sit at the dinner table with them when they have white guests and they live with their mother. Paul is very close to his white brothers one in particular is his best friend. Everything changes when they are 13 and his brother sides with some white boys against him. When his father takes his brother's side against Paul and whips him in public Paul is humiliated and enraged. It is the beginning of his quest to find land of his own. Paul is harrassed by many of the blacks for his whiteness and not part of his white family because of his blackness. Against these odds he and a black worker on his father's plantation have become close friends and the book is very much a friendship/adventure story of the two of them.
