Mildred D. Taylor
"Those colorful vignettes stirred the romantic in me. I was fascinated by the stories, not only because of what they said or because they were about my family, but because of the manner in which my father told them. I began to imagine myself as storyteller, making people laugh at their own human foibles or nod their heads with pride about some stunning feat of heroism. But I was a shy and quiet child, so I turned to creating stories for myself instead, carving elaborate daydreams in my mind. "I do not know how old I was when the daydreams became more than that, and I decided to write them down, but by the time I entered high school, I was confident that I would one day be a writer. I still wonder at myself for feeling so confident since I had never particularly liked to write, nor was I exceptionally good at it. But once I had made up my mind to write, I had no doubts about doing it. It was just something that would one day be. I had always been taught that I could achieve anything I set my mind to. Still a number of years were to lapse before this setting of my mind actually resulted in the publication of any of my stories. "In those intervening years spent studying, traveling, and living in Africa, and working with the Black student movement, I would find myself turning again and again to the stories I had heard in my childhood. One story in particular kept nagging at me, a story my father had once told me about the cutting of some beloved trees on our family land. I attempted to write it from the grandmother's point of view without success. Gradually as I struggled, new twists to the story began to emerge. At last I decided to tell it through the eyes of Cassie Logan, a spirited eight year old.

Mildred Delois Taylor was born in 1943 in Jackson, Mississippi, to Wilbert Lee and Deletha M. Taylor. Although she was born in the South, her father moved the family to the North, settling in Toledo, Ohio, three weeks after she was born. The Taylors' migration to the North was because her father did not want to raise his daughters in the segregated, racist land of the South. However, the move to the North did not keep the family from frequenting the South often to visit family members. During these visits, the family would gather together and share family stories, which captivated Taylor tremendously. These family stories were centered on the values her family instilled in her, such as courage, dignity, and self-respect. Over time, Taylor realized the differences that existed between these inspiring stories and those she read about African Americans in the history books. "By the time I entered high school, I had a driving compulsion to paint a truer picture of Black people," she said.

Acceptance Speech for the 1997 Alan Award
Mildred D. Taylor Many years ago when I first started writing the stories told by my family about our family history and about neighbors and friends and the community in which my family lived, I envisioned presenting an aspect of American history which during my own childhood was not presented in the history books. I envisioned presenting a family united in love and self-respect, and parents, strong and sensitive, attempting to guide their children successfully without harming their spirits, through the hazardous maze of living in a discriminatory society. I wanted readers to know this family, based upon my own, and I wanted them to feel akin to them and to walk in their shoes. The presentation at the National Council of Teachers of English Convention of the 1997 ALAN Award signifies to me that perhaps I have achieved some of these goals I set so long also, and I sincerely thank you for this great recognition. Writing the books based upon stories told by my family has been a long journey from my childhood to receiving the ALAN Award, but I have always tried to stay on course. From

B C D ... Z Mildred Dodds Taylor Paver Area 30 As the great-granddaughter of one of Story County, Iowa’s pioneering farm families, Mildred Dodds Taylor (1897-1990) became a pioneer in her own time. During an era when most people's education stopped at the eighth grade-if not sooner-she completed eight grades of country school, continued on to graduate from Ames High School in 1915, and then to graduate from Iowa State College in 1919 with a B. S. degree in home economics.
In the fall of her senior year at Iowa State, Mildred was invited to join Mortar Board-the highest scholarist honor for female students at that time. Membership in Mortar Board was a great source of pride for Mildred, and she continued as an active member throughout her life.
When Mildred entered Iowa State in the autumn of 1915, she lived on her parents' farm, 1 1/2 miles north of the campus, and walked over a field, through the timber, across an old footbridge over Squaw Creek to reach her classes each day. Stange Road was built that same year by inmates from the Anamosa prison, and linked to campus area with the countryside (and the farm of William and Hattie Dodds).
Following graduation, Mildred began a career of teaching home economics that led her away from central Iowa for the first and only times of her life. While teaching foods and clothing for two years in Mapleton, Iowa, she instituted new ideas that met with acclaim: a morning snack for elementary school students, and a hot lunch program for the school She went on to teach home ec in Albia, Iowa and Seattle, Washington.

US writer. She has written realistic stories to help teach children about racism. Her books tell of the lives of black people in racially prejudiced white communities, and they often show the strength and security of family life side by side with the evils of racism. They include Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (1976), for which she won the Newberry Medal in 1977, and Let the Circle be Unbroken Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi. She grew up and went to school in Toledo, Ohio, where she was the only black student in her class. After university she taught with the Peace Corps in Ethiopia and saw a pride and independence among the people there that reminded her of the stories her father had told her about his slave ancestors. When she returned to the USA, she studied journalism at the University of Colorado.

  • Mildred D(elois) Taylor
Black American writer for young adults. Taylor's Song of the Trees and its sequel Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry are felt to depict the oppression that has been a part of the black tradition with power and dignity. Taylor credits much of the inspiration for both books to stories told to her by her father about their ancestors and their struggles to establish themselves as landowners after the abolition of slavery. Taylor noticed the difference between this oral history and the history she was taught in school; while her father's stories emphasized the fact that her ancestors retained their pride despite their defeats and sorrows, she discovered that history books portrayed black Americans as weak and vulnerable. Taylor wrote her books to refute this image by telling the truth about her people, thus passing on the spiritual legacy of her ancestors. Set in Mississippi during the 1930s, both of Taylor's works concern the Logan family; these books stress the family's independence and strength as they fight to maintain their land in the face of violence and the hatred of their white neighbors. These titles, part of a proposed four-volume series, drew an almost unanimously positive response. Critics have praised her ability to present emotional issues in an unsentimental, controlled style without losing the impact of her story. She has also been praised for the poetic quality of her prose, for her characterizations, and for the fact that her books are not social or political tracts disguised as fiction. Taylor's works have also been favorably compared to Alex Haley's saga

Mildred Delois Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 13, 1943, to Wilbert Lee and Deletha Marie (Davis) Taylor. While she had only one sibling, older sister Wilma, Taylor was surrounded by a large family. Her father, who had endured repeated racist assaults, was determined to leave the South and raise his daughters in a less-racist society with more opportunity. The family moved to Toledo, Ohio, when Mildred was only three months old, traveling to their new home in a segregated train. When they arrived in Toledo, the Taylors lived with friends until they were able to buy a duplex. Once every year the family would return to the South to visit relatives, but many of their relatives eventually followed them up North, taking up temporary residence in the duplex until they could afford a place of their own.
