By Nyesha Basey and Inez Ramsey

Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi, on September 13, 1943, but moved with her family to Toledo, Ohio , where she spent most of her childhood. She went to public schools and college in Toledo. After graduating from the University of Toledo, she joined the Peace Corp and spent two years teaching English and history. While living in Africa, she observed black pride and independence which reminded her of stories her father told her.
She returned to the United States to teach and recruit for the Peace Corp. She then studied journalism at the University of Colorado, where she received her Master's degree. While attending the university, she joined the Black Student Alliance (BSA) and helped to create a black studies program at the school. After graduating, she worked as a study skills coordinator. She decided to move to Los Angeles where she worked during the day and wrote at night. For more biographical information, visit

Biography of Mildred Taylor (1943-)
Mildred Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi on September 13, 1943, to Wilbert Lee and Deletha Marie (Davis) Taylor. She later said she "was born in a segregated city in a segregated state in a segregated America." The Taylors had lived in Missisissippi since the time of slavery. However, only three weeks after their daughter's birth, the Taylor family moved to Toledo, Ohio. Mildred Taylor remained there until graduating from the University of Toledo in 1965. Several outbreaks of racially-motivated violence had occurred in the Jackson area around September 1943, and Taylor's father decided to seek a new life for his family in the North. He chose Toledo because he already had a large network of friends and relatives there. Even after their move, the Taylor family took long car trips to the South, and Mildred's experience of this environment provided the settings for her future novels. In the South that the Taylors visited, segregation was a tangible reality. However, for Taylor, the South of racism and segregation was also a "South of family and community." Familial strength is an important theme in Taylor's books, and stories about her family (aunts, uncles, and great-grandparents), as told by her father, were a staple of Taylor's childhood. Taylor calls these stories "a different history from the one I learned in school" and credits her father's storytelling with her decision to become a writer.

Taylor Jump to: navigation search Mildred Taylor (born in Jackson, Mississippi on September 13 ) is a famous author, known for her children's fiction book Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry Taylor's father believed that better opportunities awaited his family in more northern states due to the racial discrimination in the South. Thus, after her first three months of life, her family moved to Ohio after her father established a factory in Toledo, Ohio . This move got her extended family to thinking about going North as well; it ended up that Mildred D. Taylor grew up surrounded by aunts, uncles, and cousins. Storytelling was a regular event on family trips to the South. The family storytellers recollected accounts of struggles with severe racism in the South, tragedies and triumphs; humorous yarns were told and many of the stories were about surviving and the African-American family keeping their dignity in a racist culture. Mildred went to the University of Colorado. These anecdotes became very clear in Mildred’s mind. In fact, once she recalled that as the adults talked about the past “I began to visualize all the family who had once known the land, and I felt as if I knew them, too...” Taylor has talked about how much history was in the stories; some stories took place during times of

Mildred D.Taylor
Mildred D. Taylor The telling of family stories was a regular feature of Taylor family gatherings. Family storytellers told about the struggles relatives and friends faced in a racist culture, stories that revealed triumph, pride, and tragedy. The stories inspired Taylor, and she still has a vivid recollection of the storytelling sessions: The Friendship The Horn Book Magazine , March 1989, 179-80) From these stories, Taylor learned about her great-grandfather, the son of a white plantation owner in Alabama and a slave woman. In the late 1800s, this young man ran away from Alabama to buy land and settle in Mississippi; the land he purchased more than 100 years ago is still owned by the Taylor family.

Biography of Mildred D. Taylor

by Carrie Margaret Steele (SHS) Mildred D. Taylor was born in Jackson, Mississippi , on September 13, 1943. She is the daughter of Wilbert Lee and Deletha Marie (Davis) Taylor. Even though she was born in the South, she did not grow up there. Yet, for Ms. Taylor, the South still holds pleasant memories as the home of her ancestors. When she was only three months old, her parents moved her and her sister to live in the North. They moved to a newly-integrated Ohio town called Toledo. When she went to school, she was the only black child in her class. Her father decided to leave the South in the mid-1940's because he did not want his children to live their lives as he had lived his, in a segregated, racist society that allowed little or no opportunity to blacks. Over the years she came to know the South through the yearly trips her family took to Mississippi and through the stories told whenever the family gathered. Mildred Taylor was quoted in Something About the Author
