Life Summary Abbreviations KOHLER, EDWARD FREDERICK (1890-1964), sculptor, was born on 27 May 1890 at Tarampa, near Lowood, Queensland, son of Prussian-born parents August Friedrich Kohler, carpenter, and his wife Annie Hilda Limprich. Lured by the discovery of gold, Gus left for Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, about 1893; Hilda and her four children followed him six months later. The Kohlers led an itinerant life in the backblocks and Edward's formal education was minimal. A shy young man, with a talent for music and art, he was apprenticed to a blacksmith at Narrogin. After his parents separated, he joined his father at Korrelocking. On 18 February 1915 Kohler enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force. He fought with the 11th Battalion at Gallipoli (from June) and on the Western Front (from March 1916). In November 1916 he was posted to I Anzac (later Australian) Corps schools as an instructor in gunnery. Promoted company sergeant major in January 1917, he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal for his diligence and for using his spare time to make sectional drawings of gun-parts. He was discharged in England on 15 April 1919. During the war he had married Denise Marie Louise Devacht (d.1936), a 24-year-old Belgian; they were to have twin sons. In 1921-28 he performed clerical duties with the Imperial War Graves Commission in France.

DIAMOND EDDIE: The Edward Arnold Story
by John Roberts "At the mature age of 12," recalled Edward Arnold, "I decided that the business world was not the place for me and made up my mind to embark upon a dramatic career. I was just a kid, crude and unlettered, but consumed with boundless ambition."
A son of German immigrants from New York's Lower East Side, Arnold succeeded beyond his wildest imagination becoming one of Hollywood's greatest character actors. The burly man possessed a booming, yet elegant, voice gracing countless pictures from I Am a Fugitive from A Chain Gang (1932) to Annie Get Your Gun (1950). Arnold was in fact a highly paid performer achieving the ranks of stardom in Diamond Jim
His beginnings were humble and life was not always easy on the East Side. He was born Guenther Edward Schneider February 18, 1890 in New York City to fur cutter Carl Schneider and Elizabeth Ohse formerly of Hanover, Germany. Five children made for a crowded coldwater flat, but the thrifty German family somehow always had enough food on the table. Hard times began when Schneider became a partially blind invalid, forcing his wife to save rent money by becoming the building janitress. Guenther stopped regularly attending school at 11 to work any job he could get. In fast order he was a newsboy, butcher's boy, jeweler's apprentice and office boy.

    Edward Taylor: "Meditation 8" (1)
Before I begin my exegesis of "Meditation 8," I feel it would be helpful to briefly discuss the theological perspective which is the basis for Taylor's world view: i.e. Reformed Theology, otherwise known as Calvinism. This belief system centers around five doctrinal positions adopted by the Synod of Dort in 1619. These "Five Points of Calvinism" stressed the sovereign will of God in choosing His elect from among a fallen and depraved world. The Five Points were eventually organized under the acrostic "TULIP" (Total Depravity, Unconditional Election, Limited Atonement, Irresistible Grace, and Perseverance of the Saints). Although a detailed exposition of the Five Points is obviously beyond the scope of this paper, it is worth noting that these doctrines continue to have a profound influence on Protestant Theology to this day. The moving, childlike faith Taylor exhibits in "Meditation 8" is a natural outgrowth of his understanding of God's grace, which stems from these concepts. To illustrate this, we will briefly examine another one of his works, "Meditation 26." In contrast to the joyful tone of "Meditation 8," this poem is a heart-wrenching look at Taylor's realization of his own imperfection in light of God's holiness: "Unclean, Unclean: My Lord, Undone, all vile/ Yea, all Defiled: What shall Thy Servant do?/ Unfit for Thee: not fit for holy Soil,/Nor for Communion of Saints below" (350). This is the doctrine of Total Depravity in a nutshell, reminiscent of the Biblical musings of the Prophet Isaiah: "Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips…" (Isaiah 6:5), as well as those of the Apostle Paul: "O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?" (Romans 7:24)

The Preface To God's Determinations Touching His Elect:
The poem opens with an address to infinity, and it becomes obvious that
it is an infinity on the nature of John Scotus Erigena's (a famous medieval
philosopher and theologian) conception of the deity as "infinitely
inexpressible," i.e., a vast cosmological intuition of God as Cosmos. The
address to infinity takes the form of a paradox which may be freely
paraphrased: How may something be created out of nothing?
This question cannot be answered directly because the form of the question begs its answer. Next, the images become mechanical, in accordance
