Home Page Known as the best writer of the Puritan times, Taylor's works were not published until 1939. A minister for sixty years, Taylor's poetry captures the attitudes of the second generation Puritans in its emphasis on self-examination, particularly in an individual's relations to God. His poetry is said to have been influenced by John Donne and other Metaphysical Poets. A good edition of Taylor's poetry is The Poems of Edward Taylor edited by Donald E. Stanford, 1960. Edward Taylor
TAYLOR, Edward, clergyman, born in England in 1642; died in Westfield, Massachusetts, 29 June, 1729 He began his education in England with the intention of following the ministry, left that country on account of measures that were taken against non-conformists, and on his arrival in Massachusetts in 1668 entered Harvard, where he was graduated in 1671. He was invited to become minister to the people of Westfield, and arrived there Oh 3 December, 1671, but, owing to the insecurity of that frontier settlement and the small number of its inhabitants, the church was not organized till 27 August, 1679. He performed the duties of minister there, and for much of the time those of physician also, until his death. He left several manuscript volumes, including a "Commentary on the Four Gospels," "Christographia, or a Discourse on the Virtues and Character of Christ," and poems in English and in Latin.

  • Edward Taylor c. 1642-1729
American poet, sermon writer, and diarist.
    INTRODUCTION
Virtually unknown as a poet in his own time, Taylor was rediscovered in the twentieth century and is today considered one of the most important poets of colonial America. His verse is primarily contained in two books: Gods Determinations Touching His Elect (1682) and Preparatory Meditations
    Biographical Information
    Major Works
Taylor's earliest poetry, written while he was still in England, reflects his Puritan beliefs as well as his animosity towards the Anglican and Roman Catholic churches. The poem “The Lay-Mans Lamentation” more specifically took up the cause of dissenting ministers persecuted by the Restoration's Act of Uniformity. During this period Taylor also composed a letter for his brother Joseph in acrostic verse, a form that fascinated him throughout his career. While at Harvard, Taylor wrote a number of elegies and in his first year at Westfield he produced a double acrostic elegy to Charles Chauncy. Once his church in Westfield was established, Taylor began writing Gods Determinations

TAYLOR, EDWARD (ca. 1812-1836). Edward Taylor, Alamo defender, son of Anson and Elizabeth (Maley) Taylor, was born in Tennessee about 1812. He was the older brother of Alamo defenders George and James Taylor. qv At the outbreak of the Texas Revolution, qv he and his brothers were employed picking cotton for a Captain Dorsett on a farm near Liberty, Texas. Upon finishing the job they left to join the revolutionary army. qv It is believed the brothers died in the battle of the Alamo qv on March 6, 1836. Though some evidence suggests that Taylor and his brothers were victims of the Goliad Massacre, qv their names were carried on a list of the Alamo casualties a week before the Goliad executions occurred.
