Term Paper # 62369 SHOPPING CART DISABLED Nahum Tate's "King Lear"
This paper compares Nahum Tate's "King Lear" with Shakespeare's "King Lear" upon which Tate based his version.

Abstract
This paper explains that Nahum Tate's idea was to adapt Shakespeare to suit the taste of 18th century restoration theatergoers; thus, Lear no longer dies, Cordelia marries Edgar, the monarchy is restored and order once again reigns. The author points out Lear's suffering, which in Shakespeare's original play denotes the nature of humanity and the tragedy and misunderstanding that often accompany human life is completely lost in Tate's rewritten version, especially in terms of the ending. The paper reveals that the use of language by Tate and by Shakespeare also differs significantly; whereas Shakespeare believes in the reductive power of language in its simplest form, Tate's philosophy leans more towards the elevated forms of language hence the greater effect of Cordelia's simple statement in the Shakespeare play.
From the Paper
"Other significant differences between the two versions include the roles of the specific characters. Edgar, for example, takes the role of Cordelia's suitor from the beginning of Tate's play, whereas in Shakespeare he never pursues the girl, but does become king at the end of the tragedy. His role in both Shakespeare's and Tate's plays is to restore justice, but in different ways. In Shakespeare's play, his role is tragic. Because of the betrayal by his brother, Edmund, who attempted to dishonor him in his father's eyes, Edgar is obliged to disguise himself. He thus pretends to be a demonic madman in order to escape his father's men. As such he also serves as a parallel for King Lear's madness, and gives him somebody to identify with during this difficulty. Edgar thus has a redemptive function here. In Tate's play, his redemptive function is mainly focused upon Cordelia and eventually the kingdom."

Allen Tate was born in Winchester, Clarke County, Kentucky, on November 19, 1899. His schooling was desultory, with a year at a school in Nashville, three years at one in Louisville, a half year each at two public high schools, a final year at a preparatory school in Washington, D.C. He entered Vanderbilt University in 1919. His readings in philosophy and literature were sufficiently varied to impress John Crowe Ransom, from whom he took two courses and the sense of a way of life. Tate, and later his roommate Robert Penn Warren, were the two undergraduates favored by an invitation to join an adult group who met to discuss poetry and other subjects in Nashville. They called themselves the Fugitives and published a magazine, The Fugitive , to which Tate contributed a number of poems. One of these brought him a letter from Hart Crane, who thought he detected in it the influence of Eliot. A long and momentous friendship then began. Because of a skirmish with tuberculosis, Tate had to take his degree a year later, in 1923. He then did some school teaching in West Virginia, but moved on to New York in the hope of a writing career. To make ends meet he worked on a semi-pornographic magazine called

Allen Tate's Life and Career David Havird T ATE was born John Orley Allen Tate near Winchester, Kentucky, the son of John Orley Tate, a businessman, and Eleanor Parke Custis Varnell. During Tate's childhood the business interests of his father-lumber, land sales, and stocks-forced the family to move as often as three times a year. As Tate later recalled, "we might as well have been living, and I been born, in a tavern at a crossroads." By 1911 his father's business ventures and his parents' marriage had failed. The youngest of three boys by almost ten years, Tate found himself in "perpetual motion" with his mother, a native Virginian whose family seat in Fairfax County later became the "Pleasant Hill" of Tate's only novel, The Fathers From 1916 to 1917 Tate studied the violin at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music. As he implies in his late poem "The Buried Lake" (1953), his failure to fulfill his musical ambitions signaled "the death of youth." In 1918 he enrolled at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. During the fall semester of his senior year (1921), at the invitation of Donald Davidson, a member of the English faculty, Tate began attending the informal meetings of the group of men, which also included his sometime professor John Crowe Ransom, that launched the Fugitive in 1922. Tate thus became a founding editor of the poetry journal whose three-year run heralded the literary renascence of the South.
