Reading at 5:30 Thacker Mountain Radio Signing at 6:30 (upstairs at Square Books) One of the most anticipated follow-up novel in years is finally on the horizon. Donna Tartt's first book, The Secret History , was published in 1992 to rave reviews and the buzz about the next book hasn't let up since. The Little Friend is the story of Harriet Dusfresnes, a young girl who has grown up under the shadow of her brother's unsolved murder. She was just a baby when her brother Robin was found hanging from a tree in the yard. The murder tore at the fabric of her family, sending her father away and leaving her mother paralyzed by grief. At age twelve, Harriet decides to find and punish the murderer of the brother she's loved only through photographs and stories. We'll be having a signing for Donna Tartt on Thursday, November 14th. She will read from the book on Thacker Mountain Radio. After the show, she will sign copies of the book upstairs at Square Books beginning at 6:30 p.m. Further details will be announced closer to the event. We will be reserving signed copies of

The Secret History - Donna Tartt
by Helen Citron The Secret History charts the ‘freshman’ year of Richard Papen, a small-town scholarship boy at an exclusive New England college called Hampton. Sex, alcohol and drugs are all features of his first year. However, these typical temptations are merely the background to something far more sinister. Richard becomes part of an elite group of Ancient Greek enthusiasts and discovers that their passion for the classical world extends dangerously far beyond the classroom. At York, student parties tend to constitute a good old piss-up with nothing more serious to show for it than a complaint from the Badger Hill Action Group. At Hampton, Richard discovers that, having reached the summit of classical knowledge, his fellow students have attempted to recreate a bacchanal, resulting in the mutilation and murder of a local man. Tartt carefully and slowly crafts her characters, each of whom stands out distinctly. Their quirks, weaknesses and short-comings slowly become apparent, and as the group becomes increasingly embroiled in guilt and intrigue the relationships between its members become ominously fraught. The Secret History may be bleak but it is also brilliantly written and totally addictive.

Southern Goth Rock This winter has been a bonanza of highly anticipated follow-up efforts from high-profile authors. Zadie Smith's The Autograph Man , Dave Eggers' You Shall Know Our Velocity , and, of course, The Little Friend by Donna Tartt. Tartt's, perhaps, was the release awaited with the most bated breath, after the runaway success of her first book, The Secret History , published nearly ten years ago. Rumors have swelled for years not only about her debut (and the much-batted-around idea of a film adaptation) but of her follow-up. And now that her second installment has been published, nearly as much hay has been made about her return as about the book itself. Like The Secret History The Little Friend The Little Friend is technically a much tighter, mature book than The Secret History . I've read her debut novel several times over the years since it was released, and each time I realized a little more and more that while it was a juicy, captivating story, it was also incredibly unrealistic in some ways, to the point where it became distracting. Her second book is more believable, with characters who expand beyond their snazzy clichés. Perhaps it's simply the fact that

    (from Tin House , vol. 7, #2)
Most of this story is intriguing and memorable. I loved the scenes of a battlefield on repeat. It's crazy and morbid and probably exactly what a kid might do. And our narrator seems comfortably intoxicated by her new friend's rebellious attitude and leadership. This story, more often than not, has an authentic knack for getting into kids' heads. The ending didn't ring as true, but by then the hooks were already in me and I was willing to look the other way.
    Here
's some kinda homepage for Donna Tart. Here 's a link to the story. Looks like it was published in the Guardian (UK), before it was published in Tin House 's All Apologies issue, which I purchased even though there's a clown on the cover. It's a hobo clown, but a clown nontheless. I'm always putting another book on top of it.

The Little Friend by Donna Tartt
Donna Tartt's debut novel The Secret History was published to popular acclaim back in 1992. It's taken her ten years to come out with her sophomore effort, the newly released The Little Friend . The story begins with the death of child in Mississippi, a boy found hanging from a tree in his front yard. The killer is never found and the family has never recovered. The boy's sister, who was a baby at the time of his death, decides that she must right this wrong. She decides in her own mind who must be responsible and sets out to avenge her brother's death. The publisher, Random House, declares, " The Little Friend explores crime and punishment, as well as the hidden complications and consequences that hinder the pursuit of truth and justice."
