Evelyn Waugh Donna Tartt (born December 23 ) is an American writer who received critical acclaim for her two novels, The Secret History (1992) and The Little Friend (2002). Tartt was the 2003 winner of the WH Smith Literary Award for The Little Friend The daughter of Don and Taylor Tartt, she was born in Greenwood, Mississippi but raised 32 miles away in Grenada, Mississippi . At age five, she wrote her first poem, and she first saw publication in a Mississippi literary review when she was 13 years old. Enrolling in the University of Mississippi in 1981, she pledged to the sorority Kappa Kappa Gamma . Her writing caught the attention of Willie Morris while she was a freshman. Following a recommendation from Morris, Barry Hannah , then an Ole Miss Writer-in-Residence, admitted Tartt into his graduate short story course where, stated Hannah, she ranked higher than the graduate students. Following the suggestion of Morris and others, she transferred to Bennington College in 1982. There she met Bennington students

The Little Friend by Donna Tartt
Donna Tartt has now entered the same cult realm of JD Salinger and Joseph Heller not by writing a novel but rather by 'not' writing one. It's been ten years since the publication of her first novel The Secret History - a campus-set tale of murder and the consequences of putting too much faith in intellectualism over morality. Over the years the book has become something of a legend, almost universally praised and published in twenty-three languages. Tartt's publishers are now heralding her second novel as a more than worthy successor and are attempting to whip up the kind of media frenzy they are used to when publishing a new Harry Potter adventure. Strictly limited advanced copies have been nigh on impossible to get hold of, leaving the large majority of the press out in the cold and free to level accusations that the publishers are afraid of bad word-of-mouth before the publication date. Views on The Little Friend are obviously going to hinge on memories of The Secret History . Those that hated it (and there were some - Kirkus Reviews stated that it was "about as deep (if not nearly as involving) as a TV movie") may find the same faults here. It's a long book, perhaps a little too long (my own copy ran to 546 pages but the one due for publication seems to be a slightly trimmer 480) and some of the characters are not quite as well constructed as others. Those that loved

  • Actually, I enjoy the process of writing a big long novel. Anyway, it gets into one's blood, this long lonely way of writing, like a long sea-voyage. But it's for every writer to decide his own pace, and the pace varies with the writer and the work. But romantic vision can also lead one away from certain very hard, ugly truths about life that are important to know. Character, to me, is the life's blood of fiction. Children - if you think back really what it was like to be a child and what it was like to know other childrenchildren lie all the time. Children have very sharp powers of observation - probably sharper than adults - yet at the same time their emotional reactions are murky and much more primitive. Children love secret club houses. They love secrecy even when there's no need for secrecy. Everything takes me longer than I expect. It's the sad truth about life. For a novelist to create character, I think, takes a sharp objective eye but also an intuitive intelligence, a receptiveness, a wilingness to make oneself blank in order to percieve things as they actually are. I believe, in a funny way, the job of the novelist is to be out there on the fringes and speaking for an experience that has not really been spoken for.

She's used to it. They started talking in 1992 when the author, then 28, made her literary debut with the best-selling thriller The Secret History . Fans and critics have been discussing her ever since. For 10 years. Wondering what, if anything, the petite woman from Mississippi would do next. For all the speculation, though, Tartt herself has been mysteriously silent. The Little Friend , with a first printing of 300,000. Departing from the edgy tone of The Secret History The Little Friend has a prose style bespeaking Tartt's own fondness for 19th century literature. The difference is deliberate. Even a decade after her first book's publication, Tartt, who's said she'd rather spend the rest of her life reading than write another book, felt the pressure of second novel syndrome. "I found the best way of coping with it was to write a completely different kind of novel, different use of language and diction, different narrative technique, different approaches to story," she writes. "Because I was asking myself a completely different set of questions, the technical aspect kept me constantly engaged; it was almost like writing another first novel."

The prologue offers glimpses of the household before Robin's body is discovered. What do the descriptions of Charlotte, Edie, the great-aunts, and Ida Rhew show about the individual characters and the family dynamics? Do the reactions of Charlotte and Edie to the tragedy simply reinforce an established pattern or does a more profound change occur? How do their stories about Robin—their "exquisite delineation of his character—painstakingly ornamented over a number of years" [p. 19]—differ from their embellished and often improvised memories of life at Tribulation and other family stories? Tartt writes "From the time she was old enough to talk, Harriet had been a slightly distressing presence in the Cleve household. . . . Harriet was not disobedient, exactly, or unruly, but she was haughty and somehow managed to irritate nearly every adult with whom she came in contact" [pp. 27–28]. Does Harriett live up to this description? Does she change over the course of the novel? "She did not care for children's books in which the children grew up, as what 'growing up' entailed (in life as in books) was a swift and inexplicable dwindling of character" [p. 157]. How do the adventure stories Harriet prefers inform her notions of what "growing up" entails? What does her choice of books reveal about her perceptions of how the world works and the things she will need to survive? Does she have a greater understanding of the adult world than most children her age?

In the decade since her first book, she has published exactly two novels, but Donna Tartt took the literary world by storm in 1992 when the publicity surrounding the release of The Secret History came close to overshadowing the novel itself, which depicts the murder of a student at a small college in Vermont by his fellow Greek classics classmates.
In the fall of 1981, she entered the University of Mississippi in Oxford as a freshman, where one of her stories caught the attention of Willie Morris Barry Hannah (also a writer-in-resident at the university) admitted Tartt as a freshman into his graduate short story course where, Hannah says, she outperformed the graduate students.
