Even Amy Tan Gets Rejected
I am up at the Squaw Valley Community of Writers conference, where aspiring authors workshop their writing and listen to authors, agents, and editors talk about the publishing business. The conference has a long tradition of inviting back alumni who have been published, and I came to hear two friends read from their work. (We attended Squaw together in 2004.) They were Julia Flynn Siler , who wrote the House of Mondavi , and Beatrice Motamedi, Amy Tan was a participant at Squaw in 1986, and, as everyone knows, went on to great fame. (As did many other Squaw participants, like Michael Chabon Janet Fitch Alice Sebold , and more.) But when Tan attended the conference, she was like everybody else: unpublished, unagented, and unknown.
For inspiration, someone has posted a stack of Amy Tan's rejection letters. The New Yorker rejected at least two of her stories, and a bunch of publishers, including Pantheon, rejected her book, which went on to become the bestselling Joy Luck Club. Sara Bershtel wrote Sandra Dykstra The New Yorker also turned Tan down: Frances Kiernan Maybe these are above cut-of-the-mill rejection letters. But for aspiring authors, they can offer hope.

Best-selling author reveals her favorite spots in beloved hometown
02:55 PM CDT on Friday, May 18, 2007 Washington Post TROY OXFORD/DMN Staff Artist This, according to best-selling author Amy Tan. But Chinatown is the setting for so many of her novels, practically a character. A place of intrigue. Exotic, colorful, dreamy. Chinatown can be fun, Ms. Tan concedes. But now there's a cooler, lesser-known part of town where the newest immigrants from China, Vietnam and Russia have settled: in the Richmond District, around Clement Street. That's just one of Ms. Tan's favorite haunts in the city that has been her home for 30 years, and the place of her dreams during the years she spent growing up on the fringes, in a series of Bay Area towns, including Oakland and Hayward. To a suburban teenager in the late 1960s, San Francisco emitted a siren's call.

Photo by Robert Foothorap Spectral appearance: Amy Tan stumps next week for local public school libraries. Bay Area author Amy Tan talks about fame and phantoms By Gretchen Giles It's 11 o'clock on a bleary December morning in South Carolina and Amy Tan is just getting oriented. After nearly two months traveling across the nation to promote her latest novel, The Hundred Secret Senses , Tan has lost track of herself. "Purgatory is one long airplane trip with only memories of hotel rooms," she moans lightheartedly over the phone from her hotel room. "When I got up today, I kept thinking, where am I? What city am I in? It was first thing in the morning and I was actually standing upawakein the room, trying to figure out where I was. "It's like punishment for writing a book." But Tan is taking her punishment gamely, traveling coast to coast on press junkets and readings. On Wednesday, Dec. 20, she'll find herself as close to her San Francisco home as she's likely to get, standing on the stage at the Santa Rosa High School Auditorium, giving a reading sponsored by Copperfield's Books to benefit local school libraries. This writer of such popular fiction as The Joy Luck Club and The Kitchen God's Wife now has her name emblazoned in type larger than the title across the cover of her latest work. Couldn't Tan just bow out of the promotion game for a while, and let the book sell itself? "Maybe it's that old Chinese guilt that makes me unable to say 'No, I'm not going to do it,'" she answers reflectively. "In the past, I didn't do much [promotion].

You may like some of these other multicultural novels featuring strong women and family relationships… Sister of My Heart by Chitra Divakaruni
This Indian novel is an intricate modern drama in which generations and castes struggle over old and new mores. Anju and Sudha are cousins, born in the same household in Calcutta on the same day – which is also the day on which their mothers learn that both their husbands have been killed in a reckless quest for a cave full of rubies. Sudha grows up believing her father was a no-good schemer who brought ruin on his cousin, Anju's upper-class father. As they mature, Anju dreams of college, Sudha of children, but arranged marriages divide and thwart them. Also try Vine of Desire Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden
Mona In the Promised Land
by Gish Jen

In this ebullient and inventive novel, Gish Jen restores multiculturalism from high concept to a fact of life. At least that's what it becomes for teenaged Mona Chang, who in 1968 moves with her newly prosperous family to Scarshill, New York, where the Chinese have become "the new Jews." What could be more natural than for Mona to take this literally – even to the point of converting? As Mona attends temple "rap" sessions and falls in love (with a nice Jewish boy who lives in a tepee), Jen introduces us to one of the most charming and sweet-spirited heroines in recent fiction, a girl who can wisecrack with perfect aplomb even when she's organizing the help in her father's pancake house. Amy Tan I also thought of playing improvisational jazz and I did take lessons for a while. At first I tried to write fiction by making up things that were completely alien to my life. Amy Tan I did not lose myself all at once. I rubbed out my face over the years washing away my pain, the same way carvings on stone are worn down by water. Amy Tan I didn't fear failure. I expected failure. Amy Tan I have a writer's memory which makes everything worse than maybe it actually was. Amy Tan I learned to forgive myself, and that enabled me to forgive my mother as a person. Amy Tan I loved fairy tales when I was a kid. Grimm. The grimmer the better. I loved gruesome gothic tales and, in that respect, I liked Bible stories, because to me they were very gothic. Amy Tan I read a book a day when I was a kid. My family was not literary; we did not have any books in the house.

Home About Books Authors ... Recipe About The Author - Amy Tan Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California on February 19, 1952. Her family lived in several communities in Northern California before settling in Santa Clara. Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants. Her father, John Tan, was an electrical engineer and Baptist minister who came to America to escape the turmoil of the Chinese Civil War. The harrowing early life of her mother, Daisy, inspired Amy Tan's novel The Kitchen God's Wife. In China, Daisy had divorced an abusive husband but lost custody of her three daughters. She was forced to leave them behind when she escaped on the last boat to leave Shanghai before the Communist takeover in 1949. Her marriage to John Tan produced three children, Amy and her two brothers. Tragedy struck the Tan family when Amy's father and oldest brother both died of brain tumors within a year of each other. Mrs. Tan moved her surviving children to Switzerland, where Amy finished high school, but by this time mother and daughter were in constant conflict. Mother and daughter did not speak for six months after Amy Tan left the Baptist college her mother had selected for her to follow her boyfriend to San Jose City College. Tan further defied her mother by abandoning the pre-med course her mother had urged to pursue the study of English and linguistics. She received hr Bachelor's and master's degrees in these fields at San Jose State University. In 1974, she and her boyfriend, Louis DeMattei were married. They were later to settle in San Francisco.
