Saving Fish From Drowning
By Amy Tan
Fourth Estate, 474pp, $29.95 One of the characteristics of Amy Tan's writing is that you end up sympathising with characters you thought you'd loathe. The narrator of this book, Bibi Chen, is one of those. After the style of Desperate Housewives, Bibi tells her tale from beyond the grave. She doesn't divulge until the final pages how she died and even then she plays her cards close. There are things a woman doesn't talk about. There are also secrets to which not even the dead are party. They do, however, seem to gain special access to the living. Bibi's family fled Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution. Her mother, a concubine, died when she was young and her stepmother was a poor substitute. Bibi found refuge in the combination of art and America, leaving an estate worth $20 million. A fortnight after her funeral, she was due to have led a cultural tour to Burma. The tour goes ahead, but the 11 participants vanish. Only Bibi knows where they are, but Bibi is dead. In the late 1960s her father and one of her two brothers died of brain tumors and Tan's mother moved the family to Europe. After finishing high school in Switzerland in 1969, Tan returned to the United States and eventually ended up in California again, where she studied literature and linguistics at San Jose State University and earned a masters degree in 1973. She worked as a business writer and then began publishing short stories in 1986. The Joy Luck Club recounted the family tales of four modern Chinese-American women; it was widely hailed for its depiction of the Chinese-American experience of the late 20th century. Tan's other books have also fared well, including two children's books and a non-fiction collection, The Opposite of Fate: A Book of Musings (2003). Her novels include

Moreover, an attention to language, particularly the literary or the rhetorical dimension of language, enables a radical critique of neocolonialism, which (mis)uses "ethnic" (2) literature by valuing it merely for its capacity to teach dominant groups about "the really important things in lifeRoots, Culture, Tradition, History, War, Human Evil" (Wong 200). An emphasis on language resists the neocolonialist effort to displace the literary dimension of The Kitchen God's Wife. This displacement seems also to occur in this discussion, were it not for the fact that its theoretical insights respond to the novel's complex negotiation of literariness. An emphasis on literary language does generate a problem, however, which Weili repeatedly highlights in her narrative. Theoretically speaking, she confronts the unreliability of linguistic structures as they simultaneously ratify and resist the production of reliable information about the phenomenal world.

Her fiction and nonfiction, with their timeless themes of family, culture, survival, and history, have made Tan a favorite of high school English teachers across the country.

  • The Joy Luck Club , published by G. P. Putnam's Sons in 1989, presents the stories of four Chinese-immigrant women and their American-born daughters. Each of the four Chinese women has her own view of the world based on her experiences in China and wants to share that vision with her daughter. The daughters try to understand and appreciate their mothers' pasts, adapt to the American way of life, and win their mothers' acceptance. The book's name comes from the club formed in China by one of the mothers, Suyuan Woo, in order to lift her friends' spirits and distract them from their problems during the Japanese invasion. Suyuan continued the club when she came to the United States—hoping to bring luck to her family and friends and finding joy in that hope. Amy Tan wrote The Joy Luck Club to try to understand her own relationship with her mother. Tan's Chinese parents wanted Americanized children but expected them to think like Chinese. Tan found this particularly difficult as an adolescent. While the generational differences were like those experienced by other mothers and daughters, the cultural distinctions added another dimension. Thus, Tan wrote not only to sort out her cultural heritage but to learn how she and her mother could get along better.
