THE BONESETTER'S DAUGHTER

Reading Group Guides THE BONESETTER'S DAUGHTER Amy Tan BIO Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California in 1952, several years after her mother and father immigrated to the San Francisco Bay area from China. When she was eight, her essay, "What the Library Means to Me," won first prize among elementary school participants, for which Tan received a transistor radio and publication in the local newspaper. Upon the deaths of her brother and father in 1967 and 1968 from brain tumors, the family began a haphazard journey through Europe, before settling in Montreux, Switzerland, where Tan graduated in her junior year in 1969. For the next seven years, Tan attended five schools. She first went to Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, and there, on a blind date, met her future husband, Lou DeMattei. She followed him to San Jose, where she enrolled at San Jose City College. She next attended San Jose State University, and, while working two part-time jobs, became an English honor's student and a President's Scholar. In 1972, Tan graduated with honors, receiving a B.A. with a double major in English and Linguistics. She was awarded a scholarship to attend the Summer Linguistics Institute at the University of California, Santa Cruz. In 1973, she earned her M.A. in Linguistics, also from San Jose State University, and then was awarded a Graduate Minority Fellowship under the affirmative action program at the University of California, Berkeley, where she enrolled as a doctoral student in linguistics.

Biography of Amy Tan (1952-)
Amy Tan Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California, to Chinese immigrant parents. After Tan's father and brother both died of brain tumors, her family settled in Montreux, Switzerland, where Tan graduated from high school. Tan's higher education spanned five different colleges. She attended Linfield College in Oregon, San Jose City College, and San Jose State University for her bachelor's degree in English and Linguistics. She then earned her M.A. in Linguistics from San Jose State University before enrolling in the Ph.D. program in linguistics at the University of California at Berkeley. After the murder of one of her closest friends, Tan explored different paths, including consulting and directing for organizations helping disabled children, as well as working as a freelance business writer, before finding her calling as a fiction writer. When asked about why she chose to write about issues close to her family, Tan responded, "I said to myself when I was 17, 'I'm not going to have anything to do with anything Chinese when I leave home. I'm going to be completely American.' ... So if you were to say to me when I was 17, 'You know, one day you're going to write a book about Chinese people and about your relationship with your mother and how much you love your mother,' and all this stuff, I would have said ... 'You are absolutely crazy. There is no way I would ever do that.'" Despite her initial tentativeness about expresing her heritage, Tan has since published several other bestselling novels and one work of nonfiction.

    See More About:
There are two kinds of writers in this country: those who write for critics, and those who write for readers. Since 1989's i, Amy Tan has distinguished herself as one of America's most talented writers of the latter sort: Her prose is clean and elegant, her characters and stories engaging.
As with all simplifications, the above statement is untrue in several respects. Many novelists write for critics and audiences alike; and since Finnegan's Wake, perhaps the apogee of the 'purely' literary novel, some of the most-praised writers are the most widely-read. Tan's novels are full of grist for the critical mills, to be sure, but what distinguishes her-both for better and for worse-from either of the above types is that her novels are written most of all for herself: she riffs on her own obsessions, and tries to bring order to her perception of the world.

Her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. For her first book, The Joy Luck Club , Amy Tan won The National Book Award and the L.A. Times Book Award in 1989. She has been married for the past twenty-some years to Lou DeMattei . They live in San Francisco and New York with their little dogs, Yorkshire terriers Bubba and Lilli.
Amy Tan enjoys hiking, which is probably how she contracted Lyme disease in 1999. For a long time, it was debilitating, hindering her ability to write, and to tour with the literary garage band, Rock Bottom Remainders , of which she is a key member, belting out rock tunes in daring costumes, alongside other American writers, such as Stephen King and Dave Barry. Nothing can keep Amy Tan down for long, though, and she has avidly sought to bring better awareness of Lyme disease, as well as supported efforts for more research, and helped found LymeAid 4 Kids

"My sister Kwan believes she has yin eyes. She sees those who have died and now dwell in the World of Yin, ghosts who leave the mists just to visit her kitchen on Balboa Street in San Francisco.
'Libby-ah,' she'll say to me. 'Guess who I see yesterday, you guess.' And I don't have to guess that she's talking about someone dead." S o begins Amy Tan's third novel, The Hundred Secret Senses. Although it has flown up the best-seller lists in the month since its release, the book is a risky departure for the 43-year-old writer, with its emphasis on spirits, magical time-shifts and other unearthly phenomena. Tan spoke enthusiastically about her book, but admitted that she feared it would be ridiculed as "Chinese superstition." She sat for an interview on the balcony of her San Francisco home, where she surreptitiously lit up a cigarette. "I don't smoke in public, it's not a good image, it's not a good role model," she apologized. "Not that I actively set out to be one." With her tiny Yorkshire terrier, Babbazo, snugly ensconced in her lap, Tan, a brilliant smile often belying the frankness of her words, talked about the burdens of fame, the world of Yin, and her struggles with her own emotional demons.

Amy Tan was born on February 19, 1952 in California. She grew up surrounded by influences from both Chinese and American cultures. She has written about trying to assimilate into the mainstream, American world as a child, often at the expense of her Chinese heritage. Tan's father and brother died of brain tumors when she was fourteen years old. At this time, she also learned that her mother had been married to a different man in China and had three daughters from this marriage, a situation not unlike June's in The Joy Luck Club , her first novel.
