Biography
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore, a leader of the Brahmo Samaj, which was a new religious sect in nineteenth-century Bengal and which attempted a revival of the ultimate monistic basis of Hinduism as laid down in the Upanishads . He was educated at home; and although at seventeen he was sent to England for formal schooling, he did not finish his studies there. In his mature years, in addition to his many-sided literary activities, he managed the family estates, a project which brought him into close touch with common humanity and increased his interest in social reforms. He also started an experimental school at Shantiniketan where he tried his Upanishadic ideals of education. From time to time he participated in the Indian nationalist movement, though in his own non-sentimental and visionary way; and Gandhi, the political father of modern India, was his devoted friend. Tagore was knighted by the ruling British Government in 1915, but within a few years he resigned the honour as a protest against British policies in India. Tagore had early success as a writer in his native Bengal. With his translations of some of his poems he became rapidly known in the West. In fact his fame attained a luminous height, taking him across continents on lecture tours and tours of friendship. For the world he became the voice of India's spiritual heritage; and for India, especially for Bengal, he became a great living institution.

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) Greatest writer in modern Indian literature, Bengali poet, novelist, educator, and an early advocate of Independence for India. Tagaore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. Two years later he was awarded the knighthood, but he surrendered it in 1919 as a protest against the Massacre of Amritsar, where British troops killed some 400 Indian demonstrators. Tagore's influence over Gandhi and the founders of modern India was enormous, but his reputation in the West as a mystic has perhaps mislead his Western readers to ignore his role as a reformer and critic of colonialism. "When one knows thee, then alien there is none, then no door is shut. Oh, grant me my prayer that I may never lose touch of the one in the play of the many." (from Gitanjali Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta into a wealthy and prominent family. His father was Maharishi Debendranath Tagore, a religious reformer and scholar. His mother, Sarada Devi, died when Tagore was very young - he realized that she will never come back was when her body was carried through a gate to a place where it was burned. Tagore's grandfather had established a huge financial empire for himself. He helped a number of public projects, such as Calcutta Medical College. The Tagores tried to combine traditional Indian culture with Western ideas; all the children contributed significantly to Bengali literature and culture. However, in

Rabindranath Tagore
Tagore was born in 1861, the youngest son of Debendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. Debendranath Tagore was himself an influential Bengali and member of the Brahmo Samaj. Although very wealthy he had an underlying spirituality, qualities which to a large extent were inherited by his youngest son Rabindranath. As a young boy Rabindranath Tagore was asked to sing by his father. Debendranath was so impressed with the soulfulness of his singing that he credited his son with a valuable gift. Rabindranath wrote his first poem at the age of 6 and as a young boy studied the classical poetry of Kalidasa . He also studied the Upanishads, languages and modern sciences. In 1878 he travelled to England in the hope of becoming a barrister. However in 1880 he left University College London and returned to India because his father had arranged his marriage to Mrinalini Devi. Thus Tagore returned home to get married and look after his family’s estates. This enabled a productive period of writing poetry, plays and short stories. In 1901 Tagore moved to Santiniketan (West Bengal) where he found an ashram, dedicated to returning educational traditions of ancient India. Later this school was to be expanded and given the name of Shriniketan — "Abode of Peace" This project was dear to Tagore’s heart throughout his life.

Tagore has been labelled the "King of Poets" for his beautiful and exquisite poetry. In particular Tagore had a deep love and reverence for nature which he was able to express through lyrical poetry. Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his book Gitanjali. W.B.Yeats in particular was deeply impressed with this work and wrote an introduction. With this honour Tagore became famous in both India and the West. In 1915 Tagore was knighted by King George, however Tagore was to return his knighthood in protest of the Amritsar massacre (1919) Although Tagore stayed out of politics he remained a good friend of Gandhi . In fact it was Tagore who would often persuade Gandhi to give up his fasts in the interest of the nation. As a writer, Tagore primarily worked in Bengali, but after his success with Gitanjali, he translated many of his other works into English. He wrote over one thousand poems; eight volumes of short stories; almost two dozen plays and play-lets; eight novels; and many books and essays on philosophy, religion, education and social topics.

Rabindranath Tagore was born in Calcutta, India into a wealthy Brahmin family. After a brief stay in England (1878) to attempt to study law, he returned to India, and instead pursued a career as a writer, playwright, songwriter, poet, philosopher and educator. During the first 51 years of his life he achieved some success in the Calcutta area of India where he was born and raised with his many stories, songs and plays. His short stories were published monthly in a friend's magazine and he even played the lead role in a few of the public performances of his plays. Otherwise, he was little known outside of the Calcutta area, and not known at all outside of India. poems were incredible. He called his friend, W.B. Yeats, and finally talked Yeats into looking at the hand scrawled notebook.
Rabindranath Tagore's creative output tells you a lot about this renaissance man. The variety, quality and quantity are unbelievable. Aside from words and drama, his other great love was music, Bengali style. He composed more than two thousand songs, both the music and lyrics. Two of them became the national anthems of India and Bangladesh. In 1929 he even began painting. Many of his paintings can be found in museums today, especially in India, where he is considered the greatest literary figure of India of all times.

Rabindranath Tagore - short biography
Tagore went on to contribute most significantly to the cultural renaissance of Bengal and India. He was both a poet and musician composing many songs and poems as well as writing many essays on religion, nationalism and philosophy. In the evening of his life he also turned his attention towards art. A project dear to his heart was his school at Santiniketan (Abode of Peace) Tagore spent most of his life there and here he also completed much of his writings. Rabindranath Tagore was also famous in the West, in particular the Irish poet W.B. Yeats was very fond of Tagore's writings and this helped raise his profile. In the beginning Tagore received higher honour in the West than in his own native country. It was an unfortunate experience for Tagore that before his Nobel Peace Prize in 1913 he was unappreciated in his own homeland. A funny story relates to how a Bengali newspaper editor mercilessly criticised the writings of Tagore. However shortly afterwards Tagore was awarded the Nobel Prize the very next week the same newspaper editor offered his heartest congratulations and appreciation

Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) India's National Movement for freedom was accompanied by a large wave of social, educational and economic awareness throughout the nation. Tagore, one of the foremost thinkers in the country at the time spent time in building educational infrastructure. A man of true talent, his contribution to the freedom movement is significant. Gandhi has called him Gurudev (The Supreme Teacher). Tagore who gave us our national anthem wrote " I have loved India and sought to serve her not because of her geographical magnitude, not because of her great past, but because of my faith in her today and my belief that she will stand for truth and freedom and the higher things of life".

Rabindranath Tagore: Highest Price The Golden Boat My Song back to the Fat Poetry Book Index
Highest Price
translated by William Radice "Who will buy me, who will buy me, rid me of my cares?"
Thus I shout and thus I wander through my nights and days; And with each day that passes
My basket presses
Upon my head more heavily. People come and go: some laugh; some watch me tearfully. At noon I make my way along the king's great stone-paved road,
And soon he comes in his chariot, sword in hand, crown on his head. "I'll buy by force," he says
And grabs me, tries
To drag me off. I wriggle free With ease; the king climbs into his golden chariot and rides away. In small back lanes I wander past bolted and shuttered doors.
A door opens; an old man with a money-bag appears. He examines what I have
And Says, "I'll give You gold." He returns again and again, Empties his purse. With far-off thoughts I carry my basket on. At evening over the richly blossoming florest moonbeams fall.
