BEFORE SUNRISE
The myriad unfolds from a progression of strokes one, ice, corpse, hair, jade, tiger. Unlocking a gate along a barbed wire fence, I notice beer cans and branches in the acequia. There are no white pear blossoms by the gate, no red poppies blooming in the yard, no lepiota naucina clustered by the walk, butbean, goldthere's the intricacy of a moment whenwind, three-legged incense caldron I begin to walk through a field with cow pies toward the Pojoaque River, sense deer, yellow , rat. I step through water, go up the arroyo, find a single magpie feather. This is a time whenblood in my piss, ache in my nose and teeth I sense tortoise, flute where there is no sound, wake to human bones carved and strung into a loose apron.

Arthur Sze
Country: United States
Language: English
Year of birth: 1950 Arthur Sze is a second-generation Chinese-American poet. He has published seven collections of poems, including The Red Shifting Web: Poems 1970-1998. In Arthur Sze’s poetry there is room for science, philosophy and anthropology. His precisely crafted poems demonstrate how the past is ever present in the here and now: one may find plastic dishes among the remnants of the Han period. Sze teaches at the Institute for American Indian Art in Santa Fe, New Mexico.

    Be True to Yourself, Says Poet Arthur Sze dg nanouk okpik Santa Fe, NM I am more interested in a poem like a piece of artwork. In my own experience in the world I find myself constantly being surprised. Who is your favorite writer of all time? Who are you reading? "The writers of the past challenge me. In Chinese tradition I always lean towards the Tao Poet-Philosophers, Lao-tzu, Chuangtzu, Tian Wen, The Questions Regarding Heaven , I Ching-The structures or the process of divination are important to me. In Western literature, Shakespeare, Dante, and Yeats, who got better and better as he got older.
    In what direction do you see poetry going? Where are young writers leading? Poetry is wide open now. There are so many points of view, so many styles. It makes towards diversity, a bit of controversy, which is good. It might be bewildering for a young poet to feel, so I fit in, or do I not fit in? One can look at the different poetry movements of contemporary poetry like Deep Image, Black Mountain, the Beats and the Language Poets. Their resonance is still in the air. There are movements that have been done and are over with like Language Poets. They have been done a long time ago even though people still talk about it. So, on the one hand, it is a bit bewildering because there are so many literary magazines and poetry magazines. What one has to do is to look inside and ask, What it is I want to do? What is given to me to do in this time of my life? What it is to be a writer? The writing will speak for itself.

    An E-view with Arthur Sze
    By Rebecca Seiferle
    I first met Arthur Sze when we read together in a benefit reading for Amigos Bravos, an environmental group in Taos, New Mexico. At that time, he was well-known in New Mexico as a distinctive and compelling presence in the poetry of the region. He was co-publisher, with John Brandi, of Tooth of Time books, an esteemed teacher at the Institute for American Indian Arts, and the author of several noteworthy poetry collections. Since then, he has quietly and by virtue of the quality of his work become a poet of national renown. His selected poems, The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998 (Copper Canyon Press 1998), was a finalist for the 1999 Lenore Marshall Poetry Prize. Arthur Sze has been called one "of our best poets" by Charles Simic, and his poetry is esteemed by writers who inhabit a broad band of the poetical spectrum. His work has always been marked by a refinement of object and imagery. Rich in allusions, his poetry evinces a preference for Asian juxtaposition rather than Western rhetoric. In reading his work, while there is a sense of a distinctive voice, the quality of voice strikes the reader as a quality of mind, the subtle movements of a particular intelligence, rather than as oratorical. With the publication of

    Aqueous Gold
    At six a.m. the Big Dipper has swung overhead;
    in an hour you will look up to rose-tinged
    cirrus clouds. When I shut my eyes, I hear
    waves unfurl, wake to cries of birds before
    sunrise, recall the imprint of our bodies
    in white sand; from the beach, water deepens
    into teal blue in no time. Aqueous gold ripples on the surfaces of waves, but when you reach for it there, it is here, and when you reach for it here, it vanishes. The mind craves to make something perdurable out of something as tenuous as candlelight

    Vol. 3 No. 3, Fall 1998 (#11) The Redshifting Web: Poems 1970-1998 Arthur Sze Copper Canyon Press ($17) by Tony Barnstone In "Kafka and His Precursors," Jorge Luis Borges tries to get at the sources of Kafka's peculiar vision and traces widespread affinities with earlier texts, such as the fantasies of Lord Dunsany, the essays of T'ang Dynasty poet Han Yu, the parables of Kierkegaard, and the poetry of Robert Browning. In the end, however, Borges is forced to admit that the strongest connecting thread within this diversity of precursors is Kafka's idiosyncratic vision. Thus, in a very real fashion, "each writer creates his precursors" instead of the other way around. I admit that in launching into this essay on the poetry of Arthur Sze, Borges's sweet paradox was the precursor to my own meditations, but wonder if Borges might have been cribbing his ideas on influence from T. S. Eliot's essay "Tradition and the Individual Talent," as Eliot probably was cribbing from Emerson's "Self Reliance." Where does the hall of mirrors end? The Redshifting Web Arthur Sze's breakthrough book was Archipelago , not only in terms of public recognition, but more importantly in terms of the developmental arc of his poetry. The poems in
