Algernon Charles Swinburne
English poet and critic. Of his many collections of verse, the first book of Poems and Ballads (1866) is the most important, containing many of his best (and some of his most sensational) poems, such as 'The Garden of rosperine', 'Dolores' and 'The Triumph of Time'. Other notable poetic works include his play Atalanta in Calydon (1865), Songs Before Sunrise (1871) and Tristram of Lyonesse (1882). He produced studies of many writers, including Lord Byron, William Blake, Victor Hugo and Charles Baudelaire, but it was his work on Shakespeare and his contemporaries which became his most influential criticism.

    A Forsaken Garden
      I N a coign of the cliff between lowland and highland,
      At the sea-down's edge between windward and lea,
      Walled round with rocks as an inland island,
      The ghost of a garden fronts the sea.
      A girdle of brushwood and thorn encloses
      The steep square slope of the blossomless bed,
      Where the weeds that grew green from the graves of the roses
      Now lie dead.
      The fields fall southward, abrupt and broken,
      To the low last edge of the long lone land.
      If a step should sound or a word be spoken,
      Would a ghost not rise at the strange guest's hand?
      So long have the gray bare walks lain guestless,
      Through branches and briars if a man make way,
      He shall find no life but the sea-wind's, restless
      Night and day.
      The dense hard passage is blind and stifled
      That crawls by a track none turn to climb
      To the strait waste place that the years have rifled
      Of all but the thorns that are touched not of time.
      The thorns he spares when the rose is taken,
      The rocks are left when he wastes the plain,
      The wind that wanders, the weeds, wind-shaken

For the crown of our life as it closes
Is darkness, the fruit thereof dust;
No thorns go as deep as a rose's,
And love is more cruel than lust.
Time turns the old days to derision,
Our loves into corpses or wives; And marriage and death and division Make barren our lives. (Dolores (Notre-Dame des Sept Douleurs), 153-160)

    Swinburne, Algernon Charles (1837-1909) Algernon Charles Swinburne was interested in flagellation, sadomasochism, bisexuality, and lesbianism, not only for their erotics but also as gestures of social and cultural rebellion. He was born on April 5, 1837, to Charles and Jane Swinburne. The Swinburnes were an old and wealthy family, and Swinburne grew up in comfort on the Isle of Wight. A sickly child, he was educated for four years at Eton but was removed by his parents before he had completed his studies. Sponsor Message.
    He continued his education under a series of private tutors and went up to Oxford in 1856. Though he was a talented scholar, he was sent down for a disciplinary infraction and never sat the examinations for his degree. Swinburne had a striking appearance; he was very short and thin, with a huge head and large quantities of flame-red hair. He had a nervous temperament, could behave erratically, and was subject to tremors. His early talent was apparent; he wrote plays in a Jacobean style in his early teens and grew up speaking both French and Italian. He also had a lively interest in flagellationa taste probably acquired at Eton, and he shared his sexual interests with, among others, Lord Houghton, who had amassed a large library of erotica.

    A Chorus from Atalanta in Calydon
    Before the beginning of years,
    There came to the making of man
    Time, with the gift of tears,
    Grief, with a glass that ran;
    Pleasure, with pain for leaven;
    Summer, with flowers that fell;
    Remembrance fallen from heaven,
    And madness risen from hell;
    Strength without hands to smite;
    Love that endures for a breath;
    Night, the shadow of light, And life, the shadow of death. And the high gods took in hand Fire, and the falling of tears, And a measure of sliding sand From under the feet of the years; And froth and drift of the sea; And dust of the labouring earth; And bodies of things to be In the houses of death and of birth; And wrought with weeping and laughter, And fashioned with loathing and love, With life before and after And death beneath and above
