In life, according to those who knew or have written about him, Jonathan Swift was a complex combination of satire and friendship, charity and churlishness. In death too: his self-written epitaph reads in part, "Here lies the body of Jonathan Swift...where savage indignation can no longer lacerate his heart"; his will leaves his entire estate for the founding of "an hospital... for idiots and lunatics." Swift at the End
On this day in 1745 Jonathan Swift died at the age of seventy-eight, after a long period of poor physical and mental health. Five years earlier, in his last note to the last person he could still make sense of, his devoted housekeeper Mrs. Whiteway, Swift admitted to feeling "so stupid and confounded [that] . . . I hardly understand one word I write. I am sure my days will be very few; few and miserable they must be."

The Lady's Dressing Room
Jonathan Swift
Edited by Jack Lynch Five Hours, (and who can do it less in?)
By haughty Celia spent in Dressing;
The Goddess from her Chamber issues,
Array'd in Lace, Brocades and Tissues. Strephon , who found the Room was void,
And Betty otherwise employ'd;
Stole in, and took a strict Survey,
Of all the Litter as it lay;
Whereof, to make the Matter clear,
An Inventory follows here. And first a dirty Smock appear'd,
Beneath the Arm-pits well besmear'd.
Strephon , the Rogue, display'd it wide, And turn'd it round on every Side. On such a Point few Words are best, And Strephon bids us guess the rest; But swears how damnably the Men lie, In calling Celia sweet and cleanly. Now listen while he next produces, The various Combs for various Uses, Fill'd up with Dirt so closely fixt, No Brush could force a way betwixt. A Paste of Composition rare, Sweat, Dandriff, Powder, Lead and Hair; A Forehead Cloth with Oyl upon't To smooth the Wrinkles on her Front Here Allum Flower to stop the Steams, Exhal'd from sour unsavoury Streams

The Jonathan Dean Swift Seminar Series
Annual Symposia on Jonathan Swift
Conducted at The Deanery of St. Patrick's, Upper Kevin Street, under the general direction of Dr Robert Mahony (Catholic University of America),
This website record of the St Patricks Cathedral Swift symposia, initiated by Dr Bob Mahony in 2002 and continued in subsequent years, was prototyped by Techne Associates in 2002 and 2003. The feasibility having been demonstrated, the 2004 and 2005 symposia were taken over by the University of New Hampshire, and partially completed. This process however ran into difficulties outside the control of the people concerned, and the editing of the 2006 symposium proceedings is returning to Techne Associates in Dublin. Steps are being taken, belatedly, to complete the record of the series in the missing years.

  • If thats the case then I guess companies should not be allowed to have profiles either. How can Facebook take such measures without confirming the persons identity? I have a fake Facebook account that I use for testing, it has friends and looks legitimate. How would they ever know its fake?
